would have been impossible in the classroom. Each student was given a quadrant, a 10m x 10m area of the hill, and required to take count of the number and types of trees and to note the different types of vines, mosses, lichens, fungi, etc there. By examining a string of quadrants from the top to the bottom of the hill, Milam was able to obtain an accurate profile of the plant life that exists on different levels of the hill; such data is important in determining the significance of individual tree species and in determining the effects changes on a hill—such as woodcutting—can have on the biological community that exists there. The gathered data will be sent to Murray State University and other concerned parties.
