G RAFFEN MEMOR1A AUDITORIU 1986 PANTHER RUSSELLVILLE HIGH SCHOOL HIGHWAY 79 WEST RUSSELLVILLE, KENTUCKY 42276 VOLUME 38 THE RHS CHALLENGE: It is a challenge that all of us at RHS are faced with, from the first time we enter these halls in the ninth grade, until we receive our diploma four years later. It is a challenge to search our minds and souls, to discover what is in us that makes us unique and allows us to succeed. It is a challenge that prepares us for all challenges that we will face in the future. What each of us gains from our time spent at RHS is unique and will contribute to the people we will become after we leave the security of these halls. Hopefully our time is well spent, because, just as high school is a challenge, so is life—an even bigger one. Clock wise: Speech tournament participants David Stewart. Bob Ferguson and Joe McLean pay grateful homage to the memory of Thomas P deGraffenried. Sandy Dossey and Dana Cavanagh are clearly proud to be Russellville students. The old bell is a part of our proud past and future. A Robbie Rutherford's mom is helping him through the difficulty of a child's game.” Cindy DeVasier knows that studying law demands deep concentration. Throughout the history of Russellville High School, the academic standards have challenged students to do their best, and their best must be good enough since RHS placed ninth in academics out of all Kentucky's 182 high schools in the most recent test results. A new challenge—the Commonwealth Diploma—was placed upon our students this year. To receive this diploma, four Advanced Placement courses are mandatory. This is a massive undertaking, but... When the going gets tough, the tough get going! Tough standards help to prepare us for our future and will give us the edge needed to maintain our ranking of 9 in the state in academics and someday (soon) to reach 1. Mrs. Joanne Flowers is Miss Russellville as far as teachers are concerned. She's the best teacher I've ever had, says Eric Moseley. Top left—right: I know it was in there!” cries Sonya Stephenson. HMMM ... In a right triangle, the hypotenuse ...” David Britt works on one of his favorite theorems. Is Mrs. Walker really gonna take a grade on this? Left: Mrs. Wofford’s Business Law class awaits the verdict—Suicide or Accidental Death. For Mrs. Edwards, To curve or not to curve, That is the question. This must be serious: Tobeika Elliott studies during lunch for a test. At the Tobacco Festival, the football-playing Panthers display their pride. At one point in the school year, Panther Pride was thought to be dead. But the students at RHS, realizing that the future of spirit and pride at their school was at stake, took a stand. With the help of determined fans, each team involved in various areas of sports was rewarded with an excellent record at the end of the year! Because Panther Pride Is Alive!!!” Above: We appreciate Coaches Linton, Barrett. Merideth (EARS), and Wrenn. Below: Baseball players welcome new student William Watts. Raise your hands, if you’re sure (even Coach Todd)! Alive Top Panther Pride helia Marable the Club Haloweer. Party Art 1-eft the l at meow Smith! Right StJ Ah J on Ray Friends is a meaningful word at RMS. This school is made up of friends, caring and being there for each other. Our friends help us make it through the tough times, like when we lose the big game or break up with the one we thought we loved. The friendships we all make in high school serve as a basis for all personal relationships we make in the future. Keep smiling, keep shining, knowing you can always count on me for sure. That's what friends are for. Karri Hall shows her pretty smile as she rides on a float with two friends hi the Tobacco festival. C lock wise Robert Young says being cool doesn't help on the Kentucky Essential Skills Test. Traci Whitney and a friend display their beauty on the limerson Electric float. Is dog man's best friend.' Or. is man dog's best friend.' Ask Chris Wood. 6 I I I Top left-right: )oe Mcl.ean. Michele Thompson. Mar Jureka. Paul I'irchow. aiul I leather McGinnis c hill out in the hack of Paul's truck. Robert Kemp enjovs himself at a party he threw (for about 100 ot Ins friends' for which he later got into trouble. I I I 7 RHS Students show concern at the City Council Meeting. We love you, too, Mr. Mason; and you can't get mad at us for invading your privacy since your daughter Kelly took this shot of you stealing a kiss from your wife. Extracurricular Activities: Just as sports and academics contribute to the preparation of RHS students for their future, so do activities that take place outside school. These activities involve our students with the community, through things such as musicals, plays, pep rallies, and bonfires. Events such as these give students at RHS a chance to experience diverse elements. Socializing is perhaps the strongest element. Unfortunately early in the school year, students were challenged to find a solution for barriers placed on their socializing when a parking lot ordinance was levied against them. The Club Third Dimension came to the rescue by providing teens a place to dance and socialize. The tradition to party at RHS is alive and well. Faculty and staff members also enjoy extracurricular activities from time to time. Remember Ladies and Gentlemen, you saw it here first: the two greatest table tennis players. Yes; it’s Coach Barrett and Mr. Mullen. What form! What style! Ellen Boyd, Kristy Kemp and Robert Kemp listen intently during discussions of the Parking Ordinance. Is Mrs. Brantley pregnant? You know she is. Donna Smith: You look marvelous! The future RHS rifle corps is present and accounted for. Has play practice finally gotten to Mr. Chaffin? Patrick Whitmer, Ann Gill and Steve Haines watch as Glenn McGehce tries to control our noble (creative and talented) director. Coach Barren is whipping up another batch of his Mean pancakes. The establishment of clubs at RHS has formed a core of people involved in different areas that meet, make friends, pursue mutual interests, and enjoy themselves. Some clubs serve the community or school directly, but all serve the development of students in preparing them to meet goals they will soon face in the not-so-distant future. Senior work experience also contributes to future success. 10 Chris Farmer is about to Jam Out in the DJ. room at the Beaver 101 FM radio station. Working at Houchens, Dwayne Smith kindly helps a woman load her groceries.
