Text from Pages 1 - 168 of the 1984 volume:

We may not admit it but everyone wants to be the best at something and we want people to know about it. That's why we spend many hours practicing for the musical, decorating a cake, assembling a science project or learning to break dance. We want to be the best—not better than someone else, but the ultimate—the best WE can be. DOING OUR BEST TO BE THE BEST! Far left: Chad Jones and Thomas Dawson give it all they have at a Russellville Logan Co. basketball game. Jennifer Angles. Christie Nash. Yvette Maskin and Nakeitha Jackson enjoy the Raku Party at WKU. Left: Science projects can be harrowing experiences for mice and freshmen Dan Kemp and Libby Haines. Below: The football team shows they are enthusiastic off the field as well as on. Rhonda Warden and Tim Menser take a fake tumble in the speech and drama play. Senior girls enjoy the entertainment in the auditorium. Kim Grider, portraying the king of the jungle, wishes for courage during the football homecoming week. 4 5 The theme for the week was Land of Oz. The halls were decorated with rainbows and students dressed as their favorite Wizard of Oz character. The Seniors were presented with the spirit stick at the Pep Rally. Advanced chorus, led by Mr. Chaffin, sang a rousing song called Touchdown. The annual Football Player’s Beauty Contest was won by Rodney Gordon. Kay Penick was crowned 1983 Homecoming Queen during halftime of the Crittenden County game. Her court was Carla Anderson, Sonya Shoulders, Misty Head, Sha Cross, Sandy Strickland, and Kelly Link. As part of Homecoming Week, the Junior and Senior girls faced the Freshman and Sophomore girls in the annual Powderpuff game. The game didn’t have all the technique of the boys’ game, but the girls played just as hard and gave it all they had. The first half saw little scoring, but the Jr. Srs turned on in the second half and won it 22-6. 9 NOBODY DOES IT BETTER! Makes Me Feel Sad For The Rest Nobody Does It Better Baby You’re The Best Question: Who Dat? Answer: Nobody! The Panther cagers, in a 42 to 13 victory over Cumberland, proved that nobody in Class A football does it better. Led by coach of the year, Ken Barrett, the Panthers dominated the second half, scoring 21 points in the fourth quarter and bringing home the second state championship in four years. They compiled a 13-1 record, making 1983 the winningest season in Russellville football history. Top left: Brian Fruits does his dance of victory. As the Panthers worked their way to the head of their class, the team saw tangible expressions of community support. The painted windows, yard signs, and large attendance at distant games reminded students and faculty that the community is interested in and proud of their school. f EAK S OPS H Erfi 13 The 1983 Tobacco Festival held more than 30 events. Among these were many of the traditional activities, such as the parade, the beauty pageant, and the Tobacco Jam. This year’s beauty pageant held a special meaning for RHS because Kay Penick was crowned 1983 Tobacco Festival Queen. The Queen's Court included 1st runner- up Kimberly Clark, 2nd runner-up Lisa Cook, 3rd runner-up Heather Wilson, 4th runner-up Krissy Clark, and TOBACCO Miss Congeniality Michelle White. FESTIVAL 14 Christmas in Russellville welcomed a celebration from the past as the Advanced Chorus and the de Graffenried Chorale combined forces for a presentation of a 16th century Madrigal Dinner. MADRIGAL DINNER Students served as the musical minstrels, singing traditional carols of the season and attending to the service of the patrons’ tables. The three course meal complete with wassail bowl and Christmas pudding, was prepared by the RHS Food Service classes. The Chorale served as the Royal Court for the evening, with Frank Walton, Chorale President, serving as king of the castle. Following a jovial dialogue with the court jester, Tim Menser, the Chorale presented a concert of music, with some of the carols performed in the medieval style. The two performances were sold out weeks in advance. Public response was overwhelmingly positive and requests for repeat performances next year have given rise to the possibility of a new Christmas tradition in Russellville. 15 BASKETBALL HOMECOMING Basketball Homecoming was interrupted this year by a large snowfall which caused cancellation of school for two days. Black and Gold and Crazy Hat Day were held one day, but there was not enough time to decorate the halls. RHS won the homecoming game against Todd Central. Donna Kennedy was crowned Homecoming Queen at halftime. A candidate from each class was chosen for the Homecoming Court. This year’s court consisted of Freshman, Carrie Atkinson, Sophomore, Sandy Strickland; Junior, Mary Jett Roemele; and Senior Donna Kennedy. The Pep Club candidates were Vonda Beasley, Pat Croslin, and Sha Cross. The BEST Year Is The Last SENIORS Vonda, Susan, and Carla help decorate for Homecoming. The National Honor Society is based on the principles—scholarship, service, leadership, and character. This club worked hard all year doing community service and appreciating their teachers. Each teacher had a secret pal who slipped presents to them at odd times. The pals were revealed at the Teacher Appreciation Tea held at the end of the year. First row: Karin Hatler, Jimmy Meade. The cast members included: John McLean, Tim Menser, Lori Haines, Barry McReynolds, Rhonda Warden, Veronica Duncan, Donna Milam, Terry Shoulders, Doug Keith, Heather Wilson, Kari Hall, Wallis Bouldin, Sherry Sims, Shannon Cook, LouAnne Holman, Eric Kemp, Ronna Wright. Don't Drink The Water 104 “YOU’RE A GOOD MAN You’re A Good Man Charlie Brown”, a musical written by Clarke Gesner, was presented by several members of advanced chorus. The play is based on the comic strip Peanuts, and is about a simple day in the life of Charlie Brown. The theme of the musical centered around the songs You're a Good Man Charlie Brown and Happiness. These songs attempted to create an attitude that no matter how bad things seem to be, things will always turn out for the best. Characters were played by: Charlie Brown—Steve Christmas; Lucy—Misty Head; Linus—Tim Menser; Patty—Alice Gill; Schroder— Terry Shoulders; Snoopy—Annette Utley. 106 CHARLIE BROWN” 107 GETTING The student body had many assembly programs during the 83'-84' school year. The Air Force and Army Bands performed and in contrast so did the Nashville Orchestra. The Speech and Drama class presented the play Don't Drink the Water . Wick Gorrell had a candid talk with the student body about the harmful affects of drugs and FCA sponsored a guest speaker for a program. Students are hoping that the trend toward more assembly programs will continue next year. 108 TOGETHER 109 WE WILL, WE WILL RAKU! - A ' Robert Rippy. The Art Club traveled to Bowling Green to experience, first hand, the excitement of Raku. The process, developed by early Korean and Chinese potters, requires a special kiln that can be opened when the pottery is incandescent. The pottery is then smothered with sawdust to burn away the oxygen. The characteristic Raku crackles develop when the pottery is plunged into cold water. Western students, David Reneau and Barry Flemming assisted. Loretta Posey holds the flashlight as Jennifer Angles washes her pinch pot. Creating a smoke screen. Betty Whitaker throws sawdust on the glowing pot. Tina Taylor proudly displays her kiln-cooked hot dogs. Ill RECOGNIZED I I I BLACK HERITAGE 112 In honor of Black History Week, Russellville High students presented a program recognizing blacks who have contributed to our American Heritage. The program, under the directions of English teacher, Evelyn Alexander, was highlighted by a presentation of two Martin Luther King speeches monologued by Darryl Van Leer, Other participants were: Sha Cross, Coach Phil Todd, Ricky Cage, Mrs. Page. Tobeika Elliott, Contessa Grinter, Veronica Duncan, James Kees, Na-keitha Jackson. 113 AGE EXPERIENCE VS. YOUTH STAMINA The student body got out at 12:30 one spring day to watch two softball games. The first game featured the women faculty against female students. The girls beat the faculty 10-6. The men’s game had a different outcome. The faculty beat the boys 12-2. Each minute has been crowded full Of extra things to do. Day by day You’d count those left Planned for your class and you. Trips and parties; picnics too; Weekends with their fun. You wouldn't miss a single thing, So you stayed on the run. All was not rosy on the scene; Finals to seal your fate Kept you worried to the last And made you study late. Term papers you had to write; Review work in each course; Book reports to turn in; Research in every source. An then there were some gifts to buy For your most special friends; Announcements of your own to mail, Thank you notes to send. So many things to do at once, You thought, Oh, to be through.” One thing sure, there’ll be no tears, Shed at the end by you. Then, suddenly, the end was there, High School was left behind, And though relief was felt a bit, It did not fill your mind. Your thoughts race back a million miles To place you had been, To friends you’d known, and things you've done You’d never do again. And there you stood in cap and gown, To march with dignity. The music played, you took the steps; You asked, Could this be me? Each step you took seemed like a mile, As though it was a dream. Then—those tears you knew would never show Came down you face in streams. You sat and listen to the speech Attentive and still. To the challenges he read, You resolve, I will. But. somehow, as you listened there, You mind was elsewhere, too; Marching with the band out front When grass was wet with dew. Climbing up the steps to class, Standing in the hall; Sitting in the gym or field, Yelling, Get the ball!” Working on the annual, Playing P.E. games, Practicing for the play, Calling teachers names. Your thoughts went back to when you were The lowly freshman class; Honors, Mischief, through the years, And there you were, at last. Precious are your memories To ponder, but instead, You must set your goals up high And work for what’s ahead. The program closed. You all marched out, Not to return again As students ...
