Look to this day, for it is Life— The very Life of LifeI In its brief course He all the verities And realities of your existence The bliss of growth. The glory of action. The splendor of beauty-, But today well lived Makes yesterday a dream of happiness. And every tomorrow a vision of hope Look well, therefore, to this day. —Author Unknown 6 So often I sit and think about the way things were— The fun and friends, the joy we all had and the times of just being together. . . Of course there were some days, times we wondered how we made it. But our friendship helped us through. Now we may be separated, but the bond is still there. Friendship holds us together. —Joyce Brink THE GIFT OF FRIENDSHIP Friendship is a priceless gift That cannot be bought or sold. But its value is far greater than A mountain made of gold For gold is cold and lifeless. It can neither see nor hear. And in a time of trouble It is powerless to cheer. It has no ears to listen Nor heart to understand. It cannot bring you comfort Or reach out a helping hand So. when you ask God for a gift Be thankful if he sends Not diamonds, pearls, or riches but. The love of real TRUE FRIENDS. —Author Unknown shall pass through this world but once. Any good therefore that I can do or any kindness that I can show to any human being, let me do it now. Let me not defer or neglect it. For I shall not pass this way again. —Author Unknown 13 ■■ Goodbye is not an ending when people know you care, For miles may come between you but warm thoughts are always there. . . Goodbye” is not an ending but a different start for you, A time for making brand new friends and seeing dreams come true. . . ”Goodbye” is not an ending for you’ll find along life's way Within your heart you’ll always have a part of yesterday 15 —Amanda Bradley 'X o 0% V« This yearbook is dedicated to the class of 1985, without whose (spirit and enthusiasm, Russell Sage would never have been the same. o FACULTY AND ADMINISTRATION 18 William F. The '84 Field Hockey team had a lot of it. Their 3-8-2 record only shows that they couldn’t always coordinate that potential. Despite the record, there were several highlights of the season; beating Vassar 4-2, tying Potsdam in overtime 0-0, and placing five players on all-colleges teams at the Northeast Tourney in Springfield. Mass. Robyn Mills, Cricket Doyle, M.E. McElwain. Jan Murray and Nancy Coale were all selected. Jan Murray and Robyn Mills went on to play in the National Field Hockey Festival in San Diego, California. Claudia Ro-hacek, the only senior on the ’84 team, will be greatly missed after giving four years of hard work and dedication. First Row: L. Masterson. A. Litz, C. Rohacek. C. Doyle. Second Row: J. Murray, B. Bimson. S. Jones. S. Parrott. K. Davenpeck. G. Meyer. Third Row: V. Coale. K. Dana. A. Davis. M.E. McElwain. P. Kirsche. E. Stephan. P. Miller. R. Mills. TENNIS It was a season of learning for the 1984 Tennis team. They were a young team with only four returning players. Though inexperienced, their record of 5-8 was admirable and not indicative of the number of close matches, both team and individual, that were played. Capt. Co-leen Miller was the sole senior-, she consistently provided support and enthusiasm. Sue Get-chell. Sue Van Wagonen. and Darlene Foote travelled to the State Tournament in Rochester to end the season positively. Firs! Row: K. O’Connor. Second Row: J. Sakkestad. S. Van Wagonen. S. Cronan. Third Row: J. Forsche, S. Getchell, Coach Young. T. Schwallie. P. Reed. 83 - VOLLEYBALL The 1984 Volleyball team ended the season with a record of 9-31-1 which was an improvement over the previous year’s record. The team started out strong by placing third in the Green Mtn. Tourney with Linda Perkins making all-tourney team. Although there were many close matches throughout the season the numerous injuries dampened the team ’$ potential. Only three seniors played on the '84 squad: Diane Williams. Sharon Hamm, and Dawn Sweeney. Each will be missed for the spirit and talent they displayed. First Row: D. Williams. S. Hamm. Second Row: B. O'Brien. V. Heunniger. M. Van Zupten. V. Takmazawa. D. Their record was 3-5 and should improve next year as only two seniors are graduating. Carol Cronise. a valuable asset to the team for two years leaves behind numerous broken records as a result of her dedication to the sport and desire to excel. Members of this year’s Swim team were: Srs. Carol Cronise and Karen Jones, Jrs. B. McClusky. C.Goeli. S. Hannon, J. Maloney, and Kathleen Campbell. Sophs: G. Meyer. P. Stubbs, and J. Caler. and Fr. The Basketball team spent the 1984-85 season rebuilding and regrouping. A new coaching staff, along with a young team laid down the basis for a hopeful '86 season. Completing a season characterized by illness and injury, tough losses, and close finishes, the team looks ahead to next year. The team bids farewell to seniors Annie Button and Dawn Sweeney. Their leadership and dedication will be greatly missed. Some season memories: But why coach?”, team showers?, our fans”, a new women's regulation ball . . . Saddle up! 89 SOFTBALL Although not indicated by the record, the Softball team had a very successful spring. With stellar pitching performances by Kelli Martin and a tight infield, there were many close games. Seniors Sharon Hamm, a steady first baseman; Sara Broadwell. a quick firing shortstop, and Ann Bissonette, another steady fielder, will be graduating, and that leaves the '86 team to look hard to find three people to fill their shoes. Games against Siena, Hartwick (8-8). and Castleton (in the snow!) highlighted the short Spring season. Seniors Kim Love-joy and Colleen Miller provided most of the scoring with 24 and 26 goals respectively. These two. along with seniors Sue Curran and Dawn Sweeney will be greatly missed for their enthusiasm, leadership, and dedication. Asst. Coach M. Normandin. S. Eagleton. L. Audet. C. Miller. N. Recause if you weren 't. at first glance it may even seem like we weren't there. We never won Rally Day. we didn’t have a Student Government President, the Senior Gift Program had to be extended, and class and club elections were often shakey. At times on the surface, things for blue looked bleak. But for those of us who were there ... it was indeed very different. Although we never won Rally Day. we were always there with plenty of spirit and enthusiasm and several almost- victories. It didn 7 matter if we won or lost (easy to say now. huh ?) . . . the point is ... we played the game . . . and had fun doing it. Student Government withstood a President-less year, class leadership survived under the dedicated leadership of a few. and The Quill turned itself around. We brought back Damian, and. in a situation best described as better late than never, the Senior Gift Program has become a successful reality. And the Class of 1985 will most certainly join the tradition and present the college with a substantial gift at our five-year reunion in 1990. When it mattered, and even when it didn ’t, there's no doubt that the Class of 1985 was there . . . and very much here. It wasn t always easy or as we hoped. We did things our way. but for each and every one of us these past four years have been a celebration ... of all that we are and can be... as individuals and a class. Here's to all of our special memories, the smiles, the tears, the hugs and the moments that have helped us grow as individuals and that have brought us together to make our very significant and unique contribution to Russell Sage College and each other... then .. . now . . . and always. —Barbara J. Burg Never shall forget the days which I spent with you . . . Continue to be my friend as you will always find me yours. —Ludwig van Beethoven 114 115 You are a wonderful, worthy and loveable person. Appreciate that about yourself. No one has ever been, or ever will be, quite like you. You are an individual, an original. And all those things that make you uniquely you Are deserving of love and praise. —Peter McWilliams 116 117 Friends are not only together when they are side-by-side, even one who is far away . . . is still in our thoughts. —Ludwig van Beethoven 118 ••to . 119 RUSSELL SAGE COLLEGE There is a spot to mem 'ry dear, Our hearts return there year by year. Tis there To be, to know, to do” Became for us our motto true. The years may pass, our ways may part, And still we sing with happy heart. In thy dear halls by Hudson’s stream We work, we play, we fondly dream; And so we strive with mind and heart, In life’s great game to play the part. The happy days pass swiftly by, And still we sing with courage high. CHORUS Oh, Russell Sage, we sing to thee. Our voices raise in melody. Oh, Russell Sage, our college dear, We love thee more each passing year. - Winifred Podmore JO 123 SENIOR AL UMNAE BUFFET Far away in the sunshine are my highest aspirations. Remembering together-times can warm a lonely day, And thought of summer afternoons take winter's chill away. Lovely memories linger on of moments left behind. And rain will seldom come to those with rainbows on their mind. CT 06066 203-871-096 — THE END Upon the completion of the 1985 SAGE LEAVES, I decided that it is almost impossible to capture the moments spent at Russell Sage. The happy times, the laughter, the sad times and even the tears, cannot possibly be brought to life in a picture. But with the help of some very special people, I have tried. The rest, I leave to your memory and imagination, and hope that you never forget what SAGE has given us as a class and as individuals. I would like to thank all the people who have helped me to help you remember: Carmel Scalese - for always knowing what to do, Dave Lombard - for his guidance and advice, Russell Sage - for making our college years worth remembering. Mom, Dad, and friends - for supporting me and putting up with me. and finally. The SAGE LEAVES staff - for their hard work and dedication: Anne Paulhus, Assistant Editor Kim Kissinger, Managing Editor Lisa Moffit, Copy Editor Janet Wytrich, Activities Editor Laurie Myra, Seniors Editor Kate Thurston, Seniors Editor Cricket Doyle, Sports Editor Margaret Grimmer, Sports Editor Kim Grignol, Clubs Editor Kim Daoust. Clubs Editor Jill Thayer, Faculty Administration Editor Jean Forshay, Faculty Administration Editor Liz Sunners, Photography Editor Tara Wazorka, Photography Editor Thank you everyone! Paula M. Coy Editor 1985 216
