United States should establish uniform rules govern- ing the procedures of all criminal courts in the nation was the debating topic for 1983-84. The debate team participated in nine tournaments and were the host team for regionals. Those students participating on the 1983-84 debate squad were Freshmen: Lea Boxberger, Scott Boxberger, Katrina Conn, Paul Forrester, Tish Gilpin, Bill Gooch, Shauna Hackerott, Anita Krug, Daniel Krug, Barb Raben; Sophomores: Susan McKenna, Ron Wasinger; Senior: Lance Speere. Their ad- visor is Mr. Crenshaw. The fast times at RHS are led by the Student Council officers and representatives. Homecoming was the big event of October. Spirit Days included Hat Day, Pajama Day, Super Hero Day, Hush Day, and the annual Red and Blue Day. Special class competitions were held in the gym throughout the year. The pumpkin cutup and scavenger hunt were the highlights of November. StuCo also sponsored the Faculty Breakfast and Winter Sports. They also began the wheels rolling towards the purchasing of a bronzed bronco Statue. But making new friends, adjusting to a new environment, and having an open personality will help make the transition much smoother. Anne Mavropoulou, AFS student from Athens, Greece, knows all about making the switch to an American lifestyle. While in the United States, Anne has been living with the Wayne Steinert family. At Russell High School, Anne has been involved in athletics as well as academics. Through the year, Anne became a big part of the Class of 1984 and of Russell High. The halls will always seem a little quieter without her laughter and easy smile. While not involved in school work, Anne enjoyed cooking. The Wayne Steinert family gained another daughter for 1983-84. 21 LLlLUliliLi; The Seminar Program is a component of the Special Education Department. This is the first year that all four grades at RHS have been included. Clockwise, on this page, most likely to succeed are Kathy Nuss and Kevin Ney. Valerie Most and Kelly Resley are to become famous athletes in their futures. The two who are likely not to have any financial problems are Pam Rogg and Lance Speere. The two who will be around the longest will be Sarah Raben and Brian Nowak. 44 Clockwise, from the top of the page is, the famous actress and actor Amy Forrester and Steve Kennedy. The couple foretold to change the most in the future is Keri Haberer and Troy Ewers. Staying the same will be Lin- da Clark and Ricky Kolterman. Beth Davis and Mike Stoppel are to live in Russell the rest of their lives. Julie Brandeberry and Jon Dinkel are to live the furthest away from home. The two to have their works in museums as famous artists are Danica Arthur and Scott Williams. 45 The RHS football team highlighted the 1983 Homecoming festivities with a 21-7 victory over the Nicker- son Panthers. The theme for the week’s activities was Bronco Mania. Spirit week days were “Pajama Day, Hush Day,” Superhero Villian Day, and our traditional Red and Blue Day.” The snakedance and bonfire were held Thursday evening to set the stage for our Homecoming day events. The RHS Band led the parade of students down the street to the sound of the Bronco Fight song. The cheerleaders, following the truck of football players, pulled the stjdents around the streets of Russell and back to Shaffer Field for the bonfire. Senior whitewash was held following the bonfire, and eventually, the Seniors managed to mount their outhouse above the RHS gym entrance. Homecoming day events were marked by the Seniors winning the float competition, and the Freshmen capturing second. The crowning of Homecoming Royalty was held during pre-game. Kelly Resley and Julie Brandeberry reigned as King and Queen for the evening’s festivities. Other candidates were Danica Arthur and Jon Dinkel, and Kathy Kuehn and Scotty Williams. Pictured below are Charlie Schremmer, Karnelle Fogle, Barb Raben, Paul Forrester, Coach Gandy, Vince Martin, Kevin Martin, and Sam Ayres. Casey Campbell also competed part of the season. Karnelle Fogle highlighted the year by qualify- ing for the state meet where she placed 22nd. She also medaled in six other meets. Barb Raben was another medal winner with a 24th place finish at the Hesston meet. All runners entered their best times at the Lyons meet. They placed in the top four at all of their varsity meets with only one fourth place finish at the Lyons Invitational. Kristy Line. Julie Brandeberry, and Tonja Nuss were team standouts this year with Kristy taking first at the State 4A meet and Julie and Tonja placing first at Regionals and finishing among the top five doubles teams in the state. The varsity team completed their regular season play with a second place finish at the M.S.A.A. League meet, topping all teams but Lyons. The junior varsity also had a good year, gaining experience for future varsity action. 57 Rough day at Regionals, Kathy? “I think I can; I think I can.” The three Stooges check out the track meet. The crowning was held at the girls’ and boys’ basketball games against the Lamed Indians, February 7. The theme for the week’s activities was “Bronco Circus, with the main event being a win for both teams in their games. Hall decorations were put up by all classes to add to the spirit of the week. With the game falling on a Tuesday, spirit days began on Wednes- day, Feb. 1, with Inside-out Day, followed by Hush Day for the boys, Hat Day, Punk Rock Day, and Class Sweatshirt Day ended the days the following Tuesday. The 1983-84 Broncette basketball squad had a very successful season. The final win loss record was 13-84. The Broncettes finished in 4th place at the first annual Hays City Shoot Out, 3rd at Minneapolis, and 2nd in the MSAA League. It was a very successful year although the team did not make it through the first round of sub-state. The team was coached by Rick Riffel and Connie Gandy. Karnelle Fogel set a school record of 12:22.81 in the 3200 meter run and won several gold medals through the season. Tom Wells had an outstanding junior year, setting several per- sonal bests and being league champ in the 400 meter dash, with a time of 52.38. Karma Gier, another outstanding team member, set school record for the 200 meter dash with a time of 27.02. Karma was also one of the 4x100m relay which qualified for state. The highlight of the team’s season was a first place team finish at the Hays Invitational. Other finishes were fourth places at the Concordia Invitational. And the MSAA League meet, fifth place finishes at the Ellsworth and Larned Invitationals, a sixth place finish at the Russell In- vitational, and seventh place at the Salina invitational. The AFS Club had a suc- cessful and fun filled year. The adult chapter held a reception for Anne Mavropoulou, our Greek student, in September at the Elks Club. A bike-a-thon was put on by the students and adults in the chapter as a money making project in Oc- tober. Amy Forrester and Anne Mavropoulou both provided entertainment at monthly meetings by showing slides. Amy’s slides were on her sum- mer in Venezuela and Anne’s slides were on her home in Greece. May 6 the annual AFS Foreign Foods Banquet was held. The banquet provided a wide range of foreign foods for tasting. The club also attended the AFS Round-up, April 27-29, in Hutchinson. The chapter consisted of 39 members and was headed by Mr. Galen Niedenthal. To start the year the chapter placed in the silver division at the Northwest District Leadership School. Kathy Nuss was also chosen for the master ritual team. In the Public Speaking contest Kevin Ney placed second in ex- temporaneous public speaking. The Russell Chapter placed fourth in District, crop judging, and Tony Arnhold was the sixth high individual. Three members from the FFA Chapter won district proficiency awards: Kathy Nuss — Ag. Sales and Service; Tony Arnhold — Turf and Landscape Management; Marc Machin — Dairy Production. Tony Arnhold was also honored by being awarded the State Farmer Degree. The Russell FFA Chapter had a major and a very successful project which took place in the 83-84 school year. This was the B.O.A.C. pro- ject. The chapter cleaned up the area west of the Vo-Ag shop. The chapter received an area award and also received a state emblem for this project. Money-making and service projects for the Kayettes were running the concession stand during football season, selling carnations for Valentine's Day, and collecting money for the Cancer Drive. Corby and Jane were also chosen as alternates to the state band.
