As the 1982-83 school year began, the world was still buzzing with excitement over video games, the Falkland Islands Crisis, and the birth of the Royal baby. Prince William. Causing static on the wavelengths nationally were Reaganomics, the Tylenol cyanide poisonings. Princess Grace of Monaco’s untimely death, the high unemployment rate, and the NFL strike and its outcome. Locally, attention was tuned-in to the troubled school district and right here in the halls of our Alma Mater things were equally moving to the beat of a changing world. Murals in the library, cafeteria, and art hall were painted by RHS seniors, as well as a mural near the office which was commissioned by Student Council. The addition of Administrative Assistant Bud Kiene and the election of a new StuCo president also were recorded in the news. Reverberating in the halls of RHS was the sound of the “Ghetto Blaster,” which eventually became the subject for the 1982-83 yearbook. AM FM Stereo Cassette Recorders suddenly hit big on the market this year. These portable stereos can be found in almost any average American high school hallway, as well as in lockers, cars, and homes. Chosen in honor of its recently-acquired popularity, the theme is first presented on the cover, which depicts a simplified, commercialized drawing of a portable stereo. On the title page and various division pages, black and white still-life photographs of the stereo and its accessories are shown. We hope you’ll enjoy the presentation of our theme as you look through your copy of the Round-up; both now and in the years to come. Kelly Smith Editor
