ROUND-UP ’83 RUSSELL HIGH SCHOOL RUSSELL, KANSAS 67665 As the 1982-83 school year began, the world was still buzzing with excitement over video games, the Falkland Islands Crisis, and the birth of the Royal baby. Prince William. Causing static on the wavelengths nationally were Reaganomics, the Tylenol cyanide poisonings. Princess Grace of Monaco’s untimely death, the high unemployment rate, and the NFL strike and its outcome. Locally, attention was tuned-in to the troubled school district and right here in the halls of our Alma Mater things were equally moving to the beat of a changing world. Murals in the library, cafeteria, and art hall were painted by RHS seniors, as well as a mural near the office which was commissioned by Student Council. The addition of Administrative Assistant Bud Kiene and the election of a new StuCo president also were recorded in the news. Reverberating in the halls of RHS was the sound of the “Ghetto Blaster,” which eventually became the subject for the 1982-83 yearbook. AM FM Stereo Cassette Recorders suddenly hit big on the market this year. These portable stereos can be found in almost any average American high school hallway, as well as in lockers, cars, and homes. Chosen in honor of its recently-acquired popularity, the theme is first presented on the cover, which depicts a simplified, commercialized drawing of a portable stereo. On the title page and various division pages, black and white still-life photographs of the stereo and its accessories are shown. We hope you’ll enjoy the presentation of our theme as you look through your copy of the Round-up; both now and in the years to come. They learned to build a Homecoming float, only to have the parade rained out. For some, this year meant more homework than in the past. It also meant sit- ting through horrifying Driver’s Ed. films. Remember that first speech in Mr. Cren- shaw’s class? How about square dancing in P.E.? Class officers were Pres. Matt Nichols, V.-Pres. Bryan Dennett, Sec.-Treas. Gaven Ludlow. Sophomores no longer needed to dread the bullies or square dancing. The challenges were biology and magazine sales. It was a gruesome ex- perience dissecting those poor frogs. The magazine sales went well, even though the goal wasn’t met. Sophomores could now en- joy varsity sports without being full-time benchwarmers. Class officers were Pres. Jana Mai, V-Pres. The Juniors were now privileged enough to sit on the radiators which, of course, is an honor for the upperclassmen. But there was also work involved. In order to get an A in history or psychology, a term paper had to be written. The big challenge was trying to transform the Elks into a fantasy paradise. Junior class officers were Pres. The days throughout Spirit Week were: Military Day, Gangster Day, Chef’s Day, Punk Rock Day, and the traditional Red and Blue Day. The Senior class won the hall decorations and tied with the Juniors for float. Crowned in the gym this year, due to rain, were Aimee Reinhardt and Kent Michel. Other candidates were: Chris Raben, Kathy Parker, Brent LaMar, and Meg Sellers. Attendants for Homecoming were: Marci Seago and Keith Stoppel, Freshmen; Jana Mai and Stuart Kilian, Sophomores; Sarah Raben and Troy Ewers, Juniors; and Michele Peerman and Wade Glenn, Seniors. Russell savored a win, 6-0. 18 Spreading spirited whitewash are Joe Schremmer and Eric Marshall. Kelly Smith, Monica Peerman, Sheryl Krug, and Phoebe Walters punked out. Kent Michel crowned Aimee Reinhardt. Fueling the bonfire is Coach Pavlovich. 19 WINTER WONDERLAND And this is the little Mrs. O Christmas Tree! 20 A special moment is captured forever. On Saturday evening, December 18, the annual Winter Wonderland Dance was held. Pre-dance entertainment included vocal solos by Jeff Yost and routines performed by the Melissa Glenn Dancers. Mr. Crenshaw set up appointments for those wanting portraits, and set up his photography equip- ment in the little gym. At 8 p.m., the Winter Wonderland lights came on, and the rock band “The Opinions” performed and entertained until 11 p.m. Refreshments were served upstairs on the south balcony, and everyone at- tending had a memorable evening thanks to the combined efforts of the facul- ty and StuCo. MAYBE Will the only thing to change about Yvonne and Kent be their hair color? What does the future hold for the Class of 1983? Those questions were occupying the brainwaves of the Seniors as they tuned in to select the predictions of the “Senior Prophecy.” According to the results, the future may hold some interesting discoveries. The two people chosen most likely to succeed in life were Jackie Counts and Richard Lipprand. Phoebe Walters and Bill Richards were the two who were predicted to live the farthest away from Russell. The boy and girl who were chosen most likely to live the longest were Aimee Reinhardt and Chris Raben. Yvonne Deines and Kent Michel were chosen as the most likely to stay the same throughout the coming years. The Seniors who were chosen the most likely to change were David Luding and Deanne Dinkel. The two poeple who were chosen most likely to be famous were Patti Wood and Jeff Yost. We will be anxious to see if the predictions are fact in 2003. Will Siberia beckon Phoebe and Bill? Has Bill already left? 30 Will Aimee and Chris rock away 100 birthdays? Will fame’s light shine on Patti and Jeff? Will Deanne and David change more than just hair color? Will success spoil Jackie and Richard? FOOTBALL The Freshman-Sophomore football team finished their year with a 4 win, 4 loss record. Those participating on the team were Freshmen — Mark Ernst, Mike Moresco, Eric Reddig, Jody Rohleder, Deric Ross, Mike Foster, Gaven Ludlow, Keith Stoppel, Herbie Schumaker, Craig Norris, Bryan Dennett, Chuck Sellens, and Sophomores — Jerry Ptacek, Brad Neal, Steve Boltin, James Tilton, Stuart Kilian, Tom Wells, Pete Cochran, Bryan Fritz, Joe Ernst, Mike Praytor, Todd Michel, Phillip Sechtem, Mark Totten, and Kevin Wagner. Coaches for the team were Rick Riffel and Ran- dy Wetzel. 41 The 1983 Football season was headed this year by Coach Jack Pavlovich, with Frank Perbeck, Ken Gandy, Randy Wetzel, and Rick Riffel assisting. This year’s tri-captains were Kent Michel, Ron Gfeller, and Mike Craig. Other team members were Seniors Troy Hackerott, Rich Anschutz, Joe Berens, John Farmer, Barry Weese, Tony Kilian, Shawn Boltin, Mike Langhofer, and Tim Lang; Juniors Jon Dinkel, Pat Bender, Doug Hecker, Brian Nowak, Mike Stoppell, and Tim Wells; Sophomores Jerry Ptacek, Brad Neal, Steve Boltin, James Tilton, Stuart Kilian, Tom Wells, Pete Cochran, Bryan Fritz, Joe Ern- st, Mike Praytor, Phillip Sechtem, and Kevin Wagner; and Freshman Gavin Ludlow. 42 VARSITY FOOTBALL The Broncos finished with a 3-6 record for the 1982 football season. This season was a slight improvement over last year’s 2-7 record. Although the players showed much determination, it wasn’t reflected on the record or scoreboard. The Broncos had a few things going against them. For instance, quite a few players were on the field with pulled muscles and other injuries. Another thing was the lack of depth, which meant that there were few substitutes for the starters once they became tired or injured. Coach Pavlovich commented, “The season was better than most expected, but, still, anytime you lose more than you win it’s going to be disappointing.” 43 VOLLEYBALL The girls’ varsity volleyball team finished the season with 6 wins and 23 losses. They were fifth in the league tournament and were defeated by TMP-Marion in the Sub-state meet. The B team won 5 and lost 2. The freshmen won 1 and lost 1. Team members were Tri- captains Jackie Counts, Kristy Krier, and Aimee Reinhardt. The Broncette team included: top row, Coach Most, Amy Forrester, Jackie Counts, Aimee Reinhardt, Britt Nilsen, Kristy Krier, Jonette Betts, Mgr. Keri Haberer; 2nd row, Valerie Most, Samantha Woods, Mary Mermis, Michelle Deines, Rachelle Wagner, Chris Farmer, Kris Luding, Tammy Albrecht; bottom, Denise Henderson, Kathi Schremmer, and Deanna Root. At right, Aimee Reinhardt spikes the ball. Opposite page, clockwise: Jackie Counts waits, ready for the return. Serving for the Broncettes, Danica Arthur shows concentration. Amy Forrester ‘calls for it.’ Tammy Albrecht dives for a save. CROSS COUNTRY Shown to the right is the Cross Country team which included: Back row, Chris Raben, Brent LaMar, Greg Dennett, Matt Nichols, and Eric Elton; front row, Coach Talbott, John Lynch, Shellie Krug, Karnelle Fogle, and Lance Speere. Just after the starter’s gun, the runners are off and running at a local meet. Lance and Eric battle for position during the race. On page 47, top left, Karnelle Fogle is shown struggling to the finish line. Shellie and Karnelle elude the rest of the field. Bottom left, Brent, making the turn, heads for the finish line. Chris pulls away from his opposi- tion at the wire. The Bronco Cross Country season was complete after the state meet in which Karnelle Fogle and Shellie Krug represented Russell. Karnelle finished 29th in a time of 13:17, and Shellie 38th with a time of 13:27. The Runnin’ Broncs had many bright spots in the season, starting with the fact that there were four new members on the team: Brent LaMar, Lance Speere, Shellie Krug, and Matt Nichols. They joined Chris Raben, John Lynch, Greg Dennett, Eric Elton, and Karnelle Fogle from last year’s team. Individual highlights were shared by many on the team. Karnelle was in the top 10, in seven of her eight races, and is fourth on the Broncette list. Shellie finished out her first year by competing in the state meet and is third on the best Sophomore list. Brent LaMar finished out the year by placing 11th in MSAA and is the 15th best senior in RHS history. 46 47 TENNIS The Broncette tennis squad consisted of 17 girls with varsity letters. Tri-captains were Kathy Parker, Dena Jepsen, and Meg Sellers. Ginny Honomichl and Kim Bender were coaches. Sheryl Krug was the manager. In team results, the girls’ varsity had 41% wins in singles and 67% wins in doubles. The season started to close with the regionals meet held at Russell. Kathy and Kristy took the championship for the 2nd consecutive year. Julie Brandeberry and Tonja Nuss placed 4th at regionals, also qualifying for state. At state, Kathy and Kristy brought home the Runner-up plaque. 48 V % ■ Senior tri-captains Kathy Parker, Meg Sellers, Dena Jepsen. Coach Perbeck commented, “There are several individuals that gained the ex- perience to help them progress for next year’s Bronco Basketball. They became a very competitive team this year.” The Freshman Boys Basketball team ended their season with a 4-7 record. Jack Pavlovich was the coach this year and stated, “We’ve had a marginally successful season by winning 4 games.” He stated that this was a beginning stage for this year’s Freshmen. BRONCETTE J.V. Although the J.V. Broncette tallied only a record of 2-14, the Broncettes seemed to get stronger as the season ended. Coach Talbott commented that everyone got the experience which will help them next year. “The Freshmen got in a lot of J.V. playing time, because of a shortage of players, so we are looking forward to them turning the J.V. program around next year.” Players on the girls’ J.V. are: front row: Lorri Arnold, Liria Herman, Kris Luding, Paula Betts, Rachelle Wagner, Chris Farmer, Kim McCrary back row: Myra Loomis (manager), Mary Mermis, Merceda Ares, Kim Anschutz, Kathy Miska, Stacey Strieker, Cathy Snook (manager). Getting sideline instructions from the coach are: Valarie Most, Susan Shank, Andrea Krug, Kathy Miska, and Stacey Strieker. UP FOR THE SHOT is Julie Brandeberry, while Rachelle Wagner looks for a possible rebound. 55 BRONCETTES The Broncettes showed enthusiasm for the oncoming season. Team captain Lori Nuss listens to her coach. The team consisted of team captain, senior Lori Nuss, Kathy Parker, Aimee Reinhardt, Karla Kilian and Britt Nilsen; juniors Julie Brandeberry, Valerie Most, Susan Shank, Jonette Betts; sophomores Tonja Nuss, Kristy Line, Denise Henderson. Team managers were Myra Loomis and Cathy Snook. 56 ! ■ While in the Broncette huddle, coach Riffel discusses strategy. The Russell Broncette Basketball team had a win-loss record of 5 and 15. Tonja Nuss was chosen for all- league honors. Lori Nuss and Kristy Line received honorable mention. Coach Riffel commented the team showed improvement at the end of the season. “We had a very inex- perienced team,” commented Coach Riffel. Coach Riffel also said he was disappointed with their win- loss record and that they should have had 3 or 4 more wins. Karla Kilian, guard, looks for an open teammate. Aimee Reinhardt gets her hand on the jump ball. 57 The varsity wrestling team went after their sixth straight league title, but came up short losing out only to Pratt. Russell had three league champions for this year. Stuart Young had a 5-1 league mark, and Rich Anschutz and Mike Ziegler both finished with a perfect 6-0 league mark. Rich and Mike set some personal goals by attending the state meet held at Abilene. Mike placed 5th and tied the record of most falls in a season. Mike also has the record for the most wins in a season at RHS with 26. 58 BRONCETTE TRACK The 1983 track season was anything but warm! The young men and women who went out had to cope with the cold more times than usual. All in all both squads had successful seasons, although. The end results do not show the success in terms of the improvements of times and distances made by the squad. Going to state were Karnelle Fogle with the 3200 meter run and the 4 x 100 relay team of Aimee Reinhardt, Rachelle Wagner, Kim McCrary, and Karma Gier. Participating this year were Coach Ginny Honomichl and coach Kim Bender were Paula Betts, Rachelle Wagner, Kim McCrary, Sheryl Krug, Kris Luding, Amy Rodie, Keri Haberer, Kathi Schrenmer, Karnelle Fogle, Karma Gier, Sharon Schoenberger, Aimee Reinhardt, Susette Ostroviak, Lorri Arn- hold, coach Kim Bender, Deana Root, Mary Mermis, Myra Loomis, Misti Keys, Tina Pfannenstiel, Shellie Krug, Michelle McEvoy, and Charlene Krug. 60 BRONCO TRACK . . . The junior varsity had 32 wins and 30 losses, giving them a 52% record. Do you feel like you’re in a cage, Eric? 67 1982-83 The fourteen RHS cheerleaders and alternates were elected by the student body in the spring of 1982 to support the athletic competitors of Russell High. These fourteen girls and three yell leaders, who joined the squad in the fall, screamed, chanted, jumped, yelled, clapped and much more to encourage Russell’s athletes to stretch an extra inch and give their best effort. Leadership was provid- ed by Mrs. Hackerott and Ms. Schemper, the pep club advisors. For football, all twelve original cheerleaders and their male counterparts cheered for the games, but during the Winter Sports Season, the cheerleaders broke into squads of four. It was during this time that there was a change in the squad — Stephanie Will resigned, leaving her position to Danica Arthur. The 1982-83 senior cheerleaders were Dena Jepson, wrestling squad; Tracy Daugherty, wrestling squad; Jac- que Hammerschmidt, wrestling squad; Brent Lamar, yell leader; Chris Raben yell leader; and Mike Ziegler, yell leader. Juniors were Sarah Banker, basketball squads; Amy Forrester, basketball squads; Missy Killian, basketball squads. Sophomores were Monica Peerman, basketball squads; Cindi Davis, basketball squads; Karnelle Fogle, basketball squads; Jana Mai, basketball squads; and Melissa Lyzack, wres- tling squad. 69 SCOREBOARD They 19 20 7 0 39 12 26 35 14 CROSS COUNTRY 7th at Great Bend 4th at Plainville 13th at Heston 7th at Russell 7th at Lyons 8th at Hoisington 6th at League 8th at Regionals GIRLS’ TENNIS 5th at Larned Inv. 2nd at Salina Cent. Britt stayed the year with the Mark Arthur family. Britt was involved in many school activities and she had the chance to meet many new freinds. She par- ticipated on both basketball and volleyball teams. Britt adjusted to living in a small town very vaell. She believes she has learned a lot about herself, as well as about Kansas. She thinks that going abroad is a personal experience everyone should take, when the opportunity arises. Britt has been a great addition to our school for the past year. We will always have a little bit of Norway in us all from Britt and she will be taking a little bit of Kan- sas back with her. Norwegian momentos Britt meets new people 72 Britt and her host family. Mr. and Mrs. Arthur, Mark, and Danica Danica and Britt and the host-pet Duet pastimes FOREIGN AFFAIRS This year’s AFS club has been fairly active. All in all, it was a busy and productive year for the 1982-83 school year. 95 POPS CHOIR This year’s Pops Choir has been on the move. They started out with a Winter Concert on December 20, 1982. District Contest was on March 19, 1983, then State Contest was on April 23, 1983, and The Spring Concert was held on May 5th, 1983. In between con- certs, the choir performed at local organizations such as Rotary and Kiwanis. As an exchange the choir traveled to Lamed and performed for the High School. The big event of the season was the trip to St. Louis, The group prepared for this by money making projects, such as, selling candy bars, running the concession stand at District Contest along with hosting the contest, and sell- ing wholesale pizza kits. The members of the Broncette Pops Ensemble are: Paula Betts, Ginger Castor, Linda Clark, Kristen Flegler, Deanna Gideon, Devera Helwer, Amber Hull, Connie Reynolds, Gina Schmidt, and Kathy Schremmer. The choir performed both a winter and a spring concert for the public along with the Pops Choir and the Broncettes Pop Ensemble. 99 Pep Club Selling Bronco license tags was Pep Club’s biggest ac- tivity this year. A blue bronco on a red background made for a very spirited tag on many students’ cars. Pep Club is one of the largest clubs in the school having almost 80 members. In the yearbook division, our first deadline for the Round-Up” was a few weeks late, but in the end of the year, we somehow pulled it all together. As far as the newspaper went, all of the eight scheduled issues of the “Pony Express” made it into print. The staff consisted of: Michele Peerman, newspaper editor; Kelly Smith, yearbook editor; Dale Schmitt, Todd Bridges, and Kevin Phillips, photographers; Tracy Daugherty, Phoebe Walters, Karla Kilian, Eric Mar- shall, Cindy Snook, Meg Sellers, Brenda Michaelis, Kathy Parker, Shawn Boltin, and Dena Jepsen, staff; and Alice Bair, advisor. The 1982-83 jour- nalism class would like to thank the Russell Daily News for their contribution of pictures used in the yearbook. Isn't this a bit drastic for skipping class?
