At RHS, everybody is thum- body special. RHS'ers know that to be thumbody not only means a lot of work, but also a lot of fun. l 2 RHSers are all thumbody whether they are studying, volunteering at assemblies, goof- ing off or participating in school event. 3 4 5 RHS Faculty Has Many New Faces RHS is proud to have fine teachers who work hard to educate their students and help them be thumbody. Several new faces became a part of the RHS faculty this year: Frank Perbeck, Randy Wetzel, Daryl Talbott, Jack Pavlovich, Charles Golladay, Diane Owens, Ken Gandy, John Kolterman, Joyce Schraeder, and Melinda Dyke. A total of about 36 teachers make up the RHS faculty. Of course, the secretaries are also a very important part of the school system. Our hardworking secretaries are Judy Albrecht, Marie Lahmann, and Mary Seiker. The guidance counselors, who are greatly appreciated by RHS students, are Austin Covalt and Marvel Castor. The math department added two new classes this year: practical math and computer science. Other classes offered are algebra I and II, basic algebra, geometry and senior math. Teachers in the math department in- clude Mr. Miller, Mr. Golladay, Mr. Kolterman, and Mr. Shank. The department is well-equipped with calculators and new computers. 6 7 Teachers in the English department are Patricia Strecker, Jerry Crenshaw, Lowel Underwood, Fred Blehm, Dolores Earnest and Melinda Dyke. Classes offered in the English department other than English are journalism, speech, debate, foren- sics, and reading. Tom Hoffman teaches German and Ms. Dyke teaches Spanish, making up the foreign language department at RHS. In the music department, band and choir are of- fered. Joyce Schraeder is Russell High's new band instructor. Miss Schraeder, assisted by Steve Lueth, has gotten the band program really rolling. Jim Balthazor and Margaret Willson do a fine job instructing the choir classes and a new course this year designed to help make sets and props for RHS musicals. H This year’s Thumbodies participating in art classes were instructed by veteran Thumbs Trudy Furney and Derril Castor. In contrast, a new face was added to the Physical Education department, and acted as an assistant coach during football season, the new thumb on the block, Frank Perbeck. Keith Balding, Galen Niedethal, and Larry Daugherty showed the ropes to a newcomer. Ken Gandy, who put together some kind of team. No wonaer students learn so much in Practical Arts! Jim Hix and Eileen Nightingale share the joy of teaching those that have a learn- ing disability. Everyone in RHS is a true thumbody. 11 The 1980-81 school year showed some change in its departments. The Business department said hello” to a new instructor, Glenna Hackerott. and said good- bye to Barbara Bailey, who taught Typing, Advanced Office Practice Simulation, and Office Practice. Julie Stahl instructs Shorthand I and II, Accounting I and II, and Typing. Teaching Accounting, Record Keeping and Personal Money Management, Marketing, Business Law and Economics, is Darryl Talbott. RHS Science has also added a new instructor, Diane Owens, who teaches Chemistry and Physics. Don Chegwidden has the Biology I and II classes, while Victor Lyczak also instructs Biology I. Betty Huey is in charge of the Home Economics department, which includes Clothing I and II, Foods I and II, Tailoring, Interior Design, Home Economics I Marriage and Family, and Child Development. Social Science introduced two new instructors to its department, Randy Wetzel and Jack Pavlovich. Mr. Wetzel teaches Basic Government, American History, and Current World Problems. Mr. Pavlovich also instructs American History, Psychology and Sociol- ogy. Nancy Lane teaches Government and Western Civilization. With guiding persons as these, it is sure every' stu- dent is a special thumbody. 12 Administration Controls USD 407 These are the thumbodies who keep the ten schools in USD 407 in order and keep the students in school under con- trol. These thumbodies are Mr. A. Wayne Steinert, Principal; Mr. Kay Shank, Athletic Director; Mr. ]im Selby. Superintendent and Mr. Bert Hitchcock, Assistant Superintendent. The School Board for the 1980-81 school year was Joe Dauber, Jr„ Presi- dent; Julie Stahl, Secretary; and Don Brungardt; Richard Eggert; Cecil Mashburn; Elmer Svaty; Robert Mc- Cobb; and Robert Krug. These thum- bodies did a fine job for the school year. 14 16 Lucille Reidel. Teresa Dumler. June Homewood, Gert Flegler, Francis Wagner, Viv Brandenburg. Retha Christians, Francis Maier Marge Long. This year's Freshman class was led by Kevin Ney, President, Robbie Powell Vice-President and Kathy Nuss Secretary-Treasurer. This freshman class is the first one of a new decade. They had to try to pass Driver’s Ed and write all of those speeches for Mr. Crenshaw. With one year of high school experience under them they will be prepared for their next three years at Russell High. Even though they are freshmen, each one of them is still a thumbody. This year was fun. hut it had its ups and downs. Next year will be even better, because well be thumbody, an upperclassman. But lets not look ahead so fast; instead, let's look back on what this year brought us. First of all, there was biology. Now. don’t think we have anything against Cheg, it was just that the class was required. Now that it's over, and most of us passed with C’s, we don’t have to worry about it anymore. Along with biology, there was the magazine sides which we all enjoyed. For two solid weeks we sold those things and put a lot of work into it. However, coming in early every morning, and working till bedtime each evening was well worth it for the new record we set. Well, now we can look forward to next year, and try to make it twice as good as last year. The luniors did all the usual things that Junior Thum- bodies do, such as take history and English III. Along with the usual happenings during one's Junior year, this year's class won hall decorating contests and got to watch the Seniors make fools of themselves at graduation. The Seniors will forever remember the Junior class for the wonderful prom that was thrown in their honor. Yes, even Juniors are Thumbodies. The class of 1981. We came to RHS as scared little freshmen and over the years we have grown into individual thumbodies. Leading the class of '81 were: Alison Kuhn, presi- dent; David Zachman, vice-president; and Laurie Rohleder, sec.-treas. We all went through the basics: Driver’s Ed. as freshmen; disecting frogs in biology as sophomores; prom as juniors; and government and graduation as seniors. Together we shared the joys of winning the Homecoming float award for two years and winn- ing the hall decorations twice our junior year! We also set a magazines sales record when we were sophomores. When we were juniors, the Iranian students took over the American Embassy in Iran and held 52 Americans hostages until the middle of our senior year. Some of our classmates had to register in case of a draft. From August 27, 1977 to May 19,1981, we the seniors have grown and made history, together. There were many activities set up to make the RHS Thum- hodies get involved, and have spirit throughout spirit week. Each day through spirit week had its own special meaning. Activities from having dif- ferent dress up days throughout the week, to decorating the halls, and working on floats were just a few. This year, the Junior class won the com- petition for hall decorations, and the Senior class won the float competition. All these activities were centered around the main event of the Homecoming week, which was the football game with the Lyons Lions. Even though we did come out on the short end of the game, that didn't stop anyone from having a good time. David Zachman and Alison Kuhn were named King and Queen of the Homecoming festivities. As for the rest of the Homecoming royalty, Freshman attendants were Stephanie Will and Scott Williams; Sophomores, Cheryl Gideon and Kent Michel; Juniors. Suzy Ehrlich and Steve Box- berger; and Seniors, Michele Mai and G. J. Long. King and Queen candidates were Melody Selby and David Zachman, Alison Kuhn and Kelly Driscoll, and Laurie Rohleder and Kent Rohr. Even though the bonfire didn't turn out as ex- pected, the week of the RHS HomeComing for the year 1980-81 was an eventful one, and will always be remembered. 47 Bronco’s Have Rebuilding Year This year’s Russell Bronco Football team had a rebuilding year after last year’s 2nd place finish in the state. We had three new coaches in head coach Jack Pavlovich and assistant coaches Ken Gandy and Frank Perbeck. This year’s record was 2 wins and 7 losses but the team was much better than their record indicated. The team was led by 10 seniors who came out for their final year in high school. There was the big upset of the year as the Broncos upset the Pratt Greenbacks 9-7. In the coming years as the coaches learn about Russell High, their record will improve. Even though they had a losing record, the Russell High Broncos are still very special thumbodies. Mgr. Dave Luding. Troy Hackerrott, Ron Gfeller. Mike Powell. Brent Wood. Pete Kuneyl. John Farmer. Also named to all-league but not pictured is Tom Kennedy. 50 The problem with this year’s freshman football team wasn’t so much the lack of talent but more the lack of thumbodies to participate. With only thirteen men to work with, coach Rick Riffel suffered a long season. For the year the freshmen went 1-5, but often times the main problem was suiting up enough men to play. Nonetheless, the freshman team was not without its bright spots in the 1980-81 campaign. Those freshmen boys playing were: Pat Bender. Mike Burkes. Marvin Dickens. Troy Ewers. Doug Meeker. Brian Nowak. Robbie Powell. Kelly Resley. Neal Ropp. Kenny Sellens. Mike Stoppel, Tim Wells, and Scott Williams. All these people are pictured above except Troy Ewers. Although size and quantity kept the RHS freshman football team from having a winning season. RMS can look forward to a hardworking bunch of football players. 51 Volleyball Showed Determination The Broncette Volleyball team showed good improvement toward the end of their season. The new coaching staff this year consisted of Mr. Charles Golladay with Mrs. Diane Ownes assisting him. Two of our thumbodies were chosen to the All- League Volleyball team. They were Michele Mai and LeaAnna Householter. Thumbodies receiving letters this year were Lea- Anna Householter, Michele Mai, Melanie Wagner, Debbie Albrecht, Lori Kilian, Jackie Counts and Aimee Reinhardt. Playing for the volleyball squad shown at left were Seniors: LeaAnna Householter and Michele Mai; |uniors: Melanie Wagner. Debbie Albrecht. Lori Kilian and Marlis Kaufman: Sophomores: Karla Kilian. He broke the sophomore record, setting it at 10:23. He placed 3rd at league and 8th at regionals. earning his way to the state meet at Wamego. At state Chris failed to finish due to an illness. Senior Melody Selby also had a successful season. She was the league champion, her third time to win this honor. She topped off the season by winning second at the state meet in 11:59. Several personal bests were recorded by the team members, a result of the miles put in during practice. Special awards were given to Chris Raben. Cross-Country Athlete of the Year; Melody Selby. Most Dedicated Runner; John Lynch. Eric Elton, and Tim Holmes. Most Improv- eil; and David Covalt. Gold Bricker. Experience, talent, and good-coaching look to be on the Broncos side for next year's cross- country season. The 1980 girl’s tennis season ended very suc- cessfully. RHS should be very proud of the number one singles, Laurie Rohleder and the number one doubles. Judy Michaelis and Kathy Pakrer who all received second in state. This was the first time in our school’s history that three thumbodies of the team went to and placed in state competition. The team as a whole had a very rewarding year. They had over 60% wins in singles and doubles in Trio Goes to State both junior varsity and varsity. Under the coaching of Ginny Honomichl and |im Hix, the team as a whole did very well. Team members for 1980 were: Twana Plum. Sarah Banker. Dennette Bartell. |ane Zachman. Alison Kuhn. Deanna Gideon. Laurie Rohleder. Elaine Nowak. Barbara Knackstedt. Karen Maier. Ginger Castor. Judy Michaelis. Kathy Kuehn. Dena Jepson. Lisa Norris. Kathy Parker. Meg Sellers. Laurie Sawyer. Cecilia Mills. Marita Selby. |ulie Brandeberry. Cheerleaders Build Pride The cheerleaders this year performed under a completely new constitution. The purpose for the change was to give each sport equal representation. During the Winter season, each f;irl had the opportunity to cheer for every sport. Under the eadership of Jenifer Brandeberry, the girls proved they were thumbodies in their mission to “build pride in RHS. Cheerleaders for 1980-1981 were: Jacque Hammerschmidt, Amy Banker. Kathleen Denning. Kaylee Shank. Suzy Ehrlich. Patti Wood. Marlene Buehler. Tracy Daugherty. Alison Kuhn. Tracie Ewers, Dena |epsen. Jenifer Brandeberry'. Alternates were Kelly Smith and Lisa Norris. Freshman cheerleaders were: Ginger Castor. Sarah Banker. Julie Brandeberry. and Christy Sellers. 58 Entertainment at half-times during football season and basketball season was provided by the Russell High Dawn Patrol. It took a lot of effort, hard work, and many early-morning practices for this group of thumbodies to prepare the entertainment for the crowds. A special treat for this group was the opportunity to be able to perform at half-time at a Fort Hays State basketball game. The Drill Team, made up of mostly freshmen and sophomores, was headed this year by Captain )odi Hit- chcock and Co-Lieutenants Lisa Norris and Melody Strecker. The director was Mrs. Irene |epsen and the faculty sponsor was Miss Joyce Schraeder. Music was provided by the R1 IS Pep Band. Spirit week this year was as follows: Monday, Clash Day; Tuesday, Inside-out Day; Wednesday, Jog’em Day; Thursday, Hats, Boots and Buttons Day and Friday, Red and Blue Day. Class of the year com- petition was dominated by the Seniors followed by the Juniors, Sophomores and Freshmen. Along with Coach Wetzel, he brought some new ideas. It was a trying season for the thumbodies of the Bronco basketball team. This year Russell was led by five seniors who were Martin Boxberger, Kent Rohr, Darren Holloway, Keith Lindemann. and Mike Thomp- son. All contributed a great deal to this year's season. There will be much to look forward to next year, as Russell learned discipline in the face of adversity, a good lesson to be learned. 67 Frosh, JV Ready to Advance junior Varsity: Coach jim Hix. The girls were hit hard by the injury bug throughout the whole season, but despite the girls bad luck they did end the season with an 11-10 record. Rick Riffel led the team for the second year this being the first time that these thumbodies have had the same coach for two con- secutive years. He was assisted by Kim Bender. The Broncettes were led by Seniors Laurie Rohleder, Melody Selby. Rola Nuss, Lea Householter, and Dorothy (acobs all letter winners. At sub-state the wrestlers tied for 5th as a team and sent three wrestlers to state. Those wrestlers oualifying for state were Kelly Driscoll, Todd Ewers, and Kelly Tilton. All three were eliminated without placing. 73 Girls’ Track Team Has Depth ■■ ■■ ■■ mu I 74 The RHS girls' track team, coached by Ginny Honomichl and Kim Bender, was small in number but big in talent this year. They had much depth, especially in the sprints, which made the team stronger. When the weather was bad or things were going wrong at a meet, the Russell team was the one that dug deep and found that something extra which is essential in competing under adverse condi- tions. Most important of all, the girls just did their best in every event and supported each other throughout each meet. The track program is building and lots of positive things are expected to happen next year! Three of the tracksters qualified for the state track meet. The qualifierswere: Barb Knackstedt, shot put; Melody Selby, 1600m run and 800m run; |udy Michaelis, discus. In state competition Barb placed 3rd. Melody finished 2nd and 4th, and |udy was 8th.
