RHS Teletype: Introduction Patricia Snyder, Editor Along with a new year and a new class of freshmen, Russell High School wel- comed a new principal, Wayne Steinert in 1979-80. As typical of RHS, spirit abounded in all areas. Students enthusiastically participated in the KSKU Spirit Contest, winning a disc-jockey for a dance. The students of Russell wholeheartedly supported the Bronco football team as they claimed second place in the state championship. Coaches Herb LaMar and Kay Shank were given the honor of being selected by the community as Men of the Year — 1979, showing that Russell High is appreciated by the citizens of Russell. Two foreign exchange students brought new ideas and friendship to RHS and they were welcomed warmly by the students and faculty of Russell High. Travel broadened the experiences of band and language classes. Bronco talent was evident in many areas; art, music, practi- cal arts, academics, athletics, drama . . . RHS CUIDE Taylor Publishing Co. No longer will they have to get up at six o'clock and drive around the block ten times learning to parallel park. No longer will they be required to wear monkey suits (uniforms) in P.E. Some minor achievements included finally being able to drive to school legally, and managing to slip into some of the Senior parties by pretend- ing to be Juniors. Stay tuned next year as the present cast of The Young and the Rest- less becomes Juniors. They also entered into Another World when they realized that next year it would be their class walking across the stage instead of the class of 80”, and their class who would begin that Search For Tomorrow. Graduation for the Seniors is only the begin- ning of their Search for Tomorrow. Thoughts of colleges and careers and end- less days in the Bahamas occupy the minds of most. Dave Kuehn, President; Lenette Shannon, V-Pres.; and Laurie Dumler, Sec. Treas. guided the Seniors as they ended their high school days and began a new decade. This year trophies were awarded to the class that created the best hall decorations and the best float. The Junior class was awarded the first annual trophies for both. Of course, the traditional spirit week took place and Thursday eve- ning, the traditional Bon Fire and Snake Dance were held. The Seniors painted the town at the Senior white wash. Friday at 2:30 p.m. the Homecoming parade was on its way. The Homecoming Queen candidates were: Shari Albrecht, Laurie Dumler and Lynn Farrell. The King candidates were: Steve Anderson, David Kuehn and Curt Peirano. Senior Attendants were: Jim Sargent and Bonnie Pace; Jun- iors: Marlene Buhler and Bobby Smith; Sophomores: Kathleen Denning and Bryce LaMar; and Freshmen: Deann Dinkle and Troy Hackerott. Shari and Steve were crowned King and Queen. Dancing to Har- vest’' in the Rock garden followed the Bronco defeat of the Nickerson Panthers. On their way to join the Los Angeles Rams cheerleaders and the Dallas Cowboys cheerlead- ers are the Russell High School football cheer- leaders. The 1979 Football Cheering Squad con- sisted of Jenifer Brandeberry, Marlene Buehler, Virginia Schmidt, Kaylee Shank, and Melody Strecker. The football cheerleaders cheered their team to a second place finish in State. They put forth an extra effort that gave the players added encouragement that really helped their play. Cheering for the freshman teams for the 1979- 80 seasons were Cathy Parker, Karla Kilian, Meg Sellers, and Shannon Flagler. They started their cheerleading career by cheering at various fresh- man football and basketball games. The freshman cheerleaders also did their part in beginning a new and different part of the Rus- sell High School pep assemblies. The freshman cheerleaders held the cards which had the words to “Stand Up and Cheer” printed on them so the student body might begin taking an active part in singing the school song. 48 The Russell Bronco Football squad proved to be a team of winners. Perhaps Rick Dean, the sports writer for the Topeka Capital, summed it up best when he said, You don't tug on Superman's cape, you don't spit into the wind, you don't pull the mask off the ol’ Lone Ranger, and you don't put your ranked football team on the same field with Rus- sell. The team made the state playoffs this year and because of their Number One efforts they placed second Leading the team were Seniors: Brian Lamar, Brad Morris, Dave Kuehn, Brett Nowak, Gary Coady, Curt Cobb, Scott Tilton, LeRoy Stopple, Mike Wer- ner, Todd Novotny, Steve Anderson, Jim Sargent Curt Peirano, Randy Rohleder, Randy Miller, and Harry Shaw. Following up the Seniors were: Brent Wood, Bryce LaMar, Marty Boxberger, Kevin David- son, David Zachman, Pete KuneyT, Tom Kennedy, Kelly Tilton, Gaylen Ludlow, Mark Ptacek, Jeff Miller, Matt Forester, Bob Johnson, Keith Good, and Ron Hulsey. Vic Lyc- zak and Roy Miller helped show the boys what it's all about. It took much work and determina- tion but it looks like the team is well on their way to a successful sophomore year. 52 53 The Broncette Volleyball Team had a sea- son filled with continual improvement. They topped their season off by winning six of their last seven games and taking second in League! All League members selected were: Patty Davidson, Laurie Dumler, Patty Kreier, and Nettie Branch. This sport, coached by Don Rus- wurm, has special meaning to those who partici- pated in it. The Cross Country runners, manag- ers, and coaches, all formed together to create a very close group which proved to be satisfying to all. The squad consisted of Monte Selby, Tim Wil- liams, Felissa Cardenas, Annette Mahoney, Todd Ewers, Karl Frerichs, Scott Hall, Jeff Michel, Mike Thompson, Melody Selby, David Covalt, Brian Hamel, Derek Hottle, John Voos, Marlis Kaufman, Todd Bridges, Tim Holmes, Kevin Phillips, Chris Raben, Mary Miska, Tina Wade, Patti Wood, Con- nie Shaffer (manager), and Shelley Pigram. No matter what ability an athlete may have, he is always a winner in Cross Country. ‘ Use the talents you have, The woods would be very silent if no birds sang there except those that sang best.'' — Coach Roswurm — 56 RHS Teletype: Cross Country “Olympics” 57 The 1979-80 Girls Tennis Squad was led in their successful and fun season by five return- ing Seniors. Senior Broncettes were Shari Albrecht, Lynn Farrell, Shawn Flagler, Lenette Shannon, and Theresa Vladar. Other members of the team were. Juniors Barbara Knackstedt, Judy Michaelis, Alison Kuhn, Laurie Rohleder; Sophomores Marita Selby, Cecilia Mills, Elaine Nowak, Amy Banker, Lisa Norris; and Fresh- men Dena Jepsen, Kathy Parker, Meg Sellers, and Shannon Flagler. Coach Jim Hix, a new coach and teacher at RHS, was a definite plus for the squad. He assisted Head Coach Ginny (I LOVE BABIES) Honomichl. The Broncettes finished their season with a super team effort by finishing second in League. Moving to further competition were Shari Albrecht and Laurie Rohleder who cap- tured the Champion title at Regionals. They highlighted the season with a trip to State. They were eliminated in the quarter-final round. Everyone had a super year! 58 RHS Teletype: Tennis “Wimbledon” 59 If nothing else outstanding can be said about the 1980 Bronco Boys Tennis team, one can always say that the weather was good and the boys had a good time, because it was and they did. But one can say something outstanding. Brett Nowak and Randy Miller finished 1st at Regionals, qualifying them for the State tour- nament at Nickerson. This is something that has not occurred at Russell in a long time. Also qualifying for State was David Covalt, who placed 4th at Regionals. Members of the Bronco Tennis team, coached by Don Roswurm and assistant Roy Miller, were Brett Nowak, Randy Miller, Brad Morris, Randy Rohleder, David Covalt, Tim Michel, Richard Kruase, Mitch Castor, Keith Cook, Brian Hamel, Jason Sargent, Bruce Ney, Case Morris, Ron Gfeller, Richard Lipprand, Ricky Harter, Todd Bridges, David Luding, and managers, Alison Kuhn and Marita Selby. Other candidates for the honor were Kelly Rohr, Theresa Vladar, Harry Shaw, and Gary Coady. Attendants from each class were: Freshmen, Carla Kilian and Jeff Hogan; Sophomores, Suzy Ehrlich and D. J. Steinle; Juniors, Melissa Reddig and Martin Gutierrez; and Seniors, Cynthia Street and Brett Nowak. Teri, Leroy, and the rest of their court, along with the student body, celebrated Bronco and Broncette victories at a dance in the little gym following the game. Tuesday, “Jog ’em Day,” launched the traditional “Spirit Week.” It was followed by “T- shirt and Tie ’em Day on Wednesday, “Overall ’em Day” on Thursday, and “Red and Blue Day on Friday. Winning prizes for the best participation throughout the week were Melissa Reddig, Virginia Schmitt, Brad Morris, and Felissa Cardenas, respectively. The spirit shown through the hall decorations proved to be just as outstanding as it was for Homecoming. Tuesday the Freshmen and Sophomores decorated English and math halls, Wednesday the Seniors took on the cafeteria and lobbies, and Thursday the Juniors decorated Main Hall, winning top honors just as they had for Homecoming. This year’s winter sports week, with all its activities and tradition, proved to be fun and exciting. It will be well remembered by all who took part in it. The basketball fans this year were led by very fine cheerleaders. The girls' basketball cheerleaders were: Lisa Norris, Beth Bil- linger, and Laura Anchutz. The boys’ bas- ketball cheerleaders were: Alison Kuhn, Karen Rein, Melissa Reddig, and Amy Witt. The girls all did a very fine job in supporting their teams. They decorated lockers, and locker rooms, and cake was served to the girls basketball members before the games began. The basketball cheerleaders participated in two clinics this year. The Dynamic Cheer- leading Association Clinic held at Salina, and a clinic at Russell High put on by the Fort Hays Cheerleaders. The girls learned chants, cheers, and routines at these clin- ics. Much hard work and thoughtfulness was expressed by these girls this year and the basketball teams as well as the fans appreciated them all. 64 RHS Teletype: 65 The 1979-80 Basketball Squad had new lead- ers this year. Head Coach Roger Pock and assist- ant Coach Jim Hix, both new at RHS, led the Broncos to a very successful season. The Varsity Squad had an outstanding record of 15-6 for the season and a 9-3 record in league competition. They placed 5th at the Salina-Sacred Heart Tour- nament and finished 2nd in League. Sub-State was somewhat of a disappointment when the TMP Monarchs defeated the Broncos for the 3rd time during the season, but nevertheless, the squad ended their season in good standing. Individually, Harry Shaw and Curt Peirano won high honors by being selected to the All League Team. Other Seniors who did a super job were Randy Miller, Brad Morris, Brett Nowak, and Monte Selby. The rest of the squad consisted of Darren Holloway, Mike Thompson, Keith Linde- man, Kent Rohr, Marty Boxberger, David Covalt, Aaron Marshall, Curt Boxberger, David Schrem- mer, Scott Clenny, Brian Hamel, and Jeff Krause. 66 The Broncette basketball team stormed through the 1979-80 season as they tied for first place in League, took first at the Minneap- olis Tournament, and were runners-up at Sub- State. Winning letters in each weight division were: Monte LaMar (98 ), Mark Andrews (105 ), Shawn Driscoll (112 ), Tom Peterka (119 ), Todd Ewers (126 ), Kelly Driscoll (132 ), Gary Coady (132 , 138 ), Monty Karst (145 , 138 ), David Kuehn (145 ), Kelly Tilton (155 ), Scott Tilton (167 ), Todd Novotny (185=), and Mark Hamel (Hwt). Gary Coady and Scott Tilton acted as Captains for the year. Besides having such an excellent overall record, the wrestlers were MSAA League Champs for the fourth year. They placed second at the Beloit Regionals and third at Kapaun-Mt. Carmel. Five team members, Tom Peterka, Gary Coady, Kelly Tilton, Scott Tilton, and Mark Hamel, were All-MSAA League Champions, and Scott Tilton was selected Honorable Mention All Area by the Salina Journal. 70 71 Mr. Kinsler's very fine Junior Varsity team followed up the Varsity wrestlers' perform- ance with a winning 6-2-1 team record. Senior Laurie Dumler headed the squad consisting of Shawn Flagler, Sen- ior, Amy Banker, Sophomore, and Kathleen Denning, also a Sophomore. Besides following the team to all their reg- ular season matches and giving the team their full support, the girls were able to attend two tournaments involving an over- night stay. Mrs. Lyczak sponsored the girls on their trip to Wichita to cheer at the Kapaun-Mt. Carmel Invitational tourney, and Mrs. Dumler accompanied them to the Sub- State tournament at Colby. This year's squad showed a great deal of spirit and enthusiasm. They were in charge of and helped with the Pep Assemblies, and spent many long hours making posters for the hallways and locker rooms. The girls and their support of the wrestlers surely contributed to the excellent season the team had. 73 The 1980 Russell High School track season was a very good one for the girls team. Hard work, effort, success and lots of fun were the ele- ments which produced one of the strongest girls track teams in the past few years. The team qualified four members for the State Competition: Patty Davidson, senior, and Barb Knackstedt, Judy Michaelis and Melody Selby, juniors. Under the direction of Roger Dill and Steve Leuth, the band performed during many pregames and half- times. The crowds were overwhelmed with the band's music, especially during basketball sea- son when the Pep Band played the NBC Sports Theme, the Wabash Cannonball, and Here Comes the King.” This year the entire band and many small ensembles went to the State Music Festival at Lyons. It is the first time in many years that the band has gone to a state music contest. Even though the band department has sent just instru- ment ensembles to contest for quite a while, the band did well and earned a II for their efforts. The band also went to Estes Park, Colorado, for their band trip on May 2, 3, and 4. This year the band members raised money for the trip by selling assorted types of candy. The Bronco Pops Choir along with Mark and Monte Selby provided musical entertainment prior to the dance. Then the excitement began! The band, LUK, came alive as they created a dance-filled atmos- phere of popular music. During the band's intermission Jerry Crenshaw photographed couples so the memory of the wonderful eve- ning could be preserved. The annual Winter Wonderland again turned out to be a beauti- ful success. 118 RHS Teletype: Winter Wonderland “The Late, Late Show” Invitations were sent out to every student of RHS. The art classes, guided by Mrs. Furney, designed them and inscribed them with the fol- lowing poem: I wish you good spaces in the far away places you go. If it rains or it snows, may you be safe and warm And if you need somebody sometime, you know I will always be there. 120 RHS Teletype: Prom “The Tonight Show” 121 The Big Event was held on May 22, 1980, when the seniors took their final steps through life at Russell High School. After 12 years of hard work their day had come. Graduation was preceded by Baccalaureate held May 19. Pastor Herman Frerichs spoke to the seniors and their families. Giving the invo- cation and benediction for both Baccalaureate and Commencement was Pastor James Stra- sen. Graduation night came, bringing its tears, goodbyes, and happiness. The guest speaker for Commencement was Mrs. Margorie A Heard Franklin, an RHS graduate of 1962. The Class of 1980 proved to be outstanding, having 11 students in the top 10. It also had an unusual tie, with Tri-Valedictorians with a straight 4.0 grade average: Sherri Burks, Kath- erine Eggert, and Annette Mahoney. Setting school policy and carrying that policy through are duties to fall to the School Board of USD 407 and the principal and activities direc- tor of Russell High School. The more exciting part of that challenge, however, comes with the participation in ceremonies for graduating sen- iors here and throughout the district. Administra- tors feel the rewards for their labors when they present the seniors their well earned diplomas. Always present, Russell High School is grateful for such dedicated leaders. School Board Members included President, Robert McCobb, Don Brungardt, Joe Dauber, Jr., Richard Eggert, Robert Krug, Cecil Mashburn and Elmer Svary. Principal for Russell High School is Mr. Wayne Steinert. Although new to us this year, Mr. Stei- nert has been a mainstay in our year. Such dependability is appreciated. Activities Director is Mr. Kay Shank. His organi- zation allowed the year to run smoothly. The Superintendent of Schools, Mr. Jim Selby, and the Assistant Superintendent, Mr. Bert Hitch- cock, not only must supervise RHS but all the other attendance centers within District 407. It is a demanding job handled efficiently by these two able and willing administrators. 124 RHS Teletype: Administration “The Guiding Light” RHS Teletype: Closing Days of Our Lives This book has attempted to show the life of the students in relation to a favored activity; watching T.V.
