Over the year, if one wanted to find Seija, she might have been found in the Vo-Ag building where she had been tearing down a small gasoline engine, or possibly in the gym, pounding away at a volleyball. In either case, she was just your average warm-hearted Finnish girl. Seija arrived in Russell August 26, 1978 from her native home-Turku, Finland. In Russell she lived with Mrs. Gloria Severance and her daughter Susan. While attending RHS Seija involved herself in many school activities. She also managed to tell the students and the Russell community about Finland and its way of life. For leisure, Seija spent a lot of her time sewing, bowling, playing cards and viewing hit movies; among her favorites — Grease. When Seija came, she brought to us new ideas, a sense of challenge, and true friendship. As she leaves, those things stay with us as a memory — a memory that will never be forgotten. KMS Challenges Seija With Unusual Activities Homecoming, that special game In the season of football, was filled with many events and activities. Dress-up days consisted of: Overall 'Em Day, Tie One On 'Em Day, Clash Day, Shade and Hat Day, and Red and Blue Day. The week was filled with float planning, the caravan, Senior Whitewash, the mysterious placement of an outhouse on the school building, and the pa- rade. The grand finale — Friday evening October 6, seven o'clock; The an- nouncements blared over the intercom: The titles of King and Queen were given to Steve Parker and Judy Saryerwinnie, and Seniors won the float com- petition for the third year in a row. The other candidates were Harry LaMar, Jerry Gutierrez, Carmen Ptacek, and Alice Raben. Attendants, chosen by their classmates, were Seniors: Alan Ginther, Lorrie Baker; Juniors: Randy Wall, Katrina Thompson; Sophomores: Jeff Michels, Judy Michaelis; Freshman: Mark Ptacek, Virginia Schmitt. The Crown Bearer and Flower Girl were Scott Green and Shelly Branch. The Broncos brought the Eagles down to Earth with a 17-6 victory. The dance in the gym with music by Roarin' Judy was a big success. During the 1978 season, Russell held three tournaments in- cluding Class 4A Regionals from which Shari Al- brecht, a junior, and Laurie Rohleder, a sophomore, qualified for state. They were eliminated in close sets the 1st round. The team was very young with Gwenna Green be- ing the only senior on the squad. The Broncos were rated No. 1 at the start of the season, but lost their ranking when the Nickerson Panthers upset the team. Russell went on to win their next five ballgames before entering the Mid- State Tournament. Russell defeated Abilene and Nickerson before losing a close game to Lyons in the Mid-State Tournament finals. Rege Klitzke, Ty Henderson, Harry Shaw and Curt Peirano were named to the Mid-State Tournament Team. Russell then went on to win the last 14 games in the season. The team easily sewed up the MSAA League with an 11 and 1 record, with Rege Klitzke and Ty Henderson making All-League Team, and Frank Schulte, Har- ry Shaw and Curt Peirano receiving Honorable mention All- League. The Broncos then set out to prove that they were No. 1. Russell was awsome in the Sub-State and State Tournaments. The team devestated Phillipsburg, Norton, and Concordia in the Sub- State. The average victory margin in that tournament was 32 points. This opened the door to the State Tournament for the Broncos. The team easily swept through the tournament by defeat- ing Perry—LeCompton, Louisburg, and Scott City in the State finals. The average victory margin in the State Tournament was 27 points. Rege Klitzke, Ty Henderson and Harry Shaw were named to the All-State Tournament Team. The Broncettes had three returning letterpersons on the squad this year. They were: Patty Davidson, LaRissa Marshall, and Teri Powell, The sea- son was rewarding, the Broncettes won their own Russell Invitational Tourney and placed 6th in league — two wins out of third place. The Broncettes will be losing only one Senior, LaRissa Marshall, who was a very important part of the team, when not injured. The team should be very strong next year, for there will be fine athletes returning. Lettermen for the 1978-79 season were: Freshmen Sherry Holloway; Sophomores LeaAnna Householter, Laurie Rohleder, and Melody Selby; Juniors Patty Davidson, Annette Ma- honey, and Teri Powell; and Senior LaRissa Marshall. Other members of the team are: Freshmen Marl is Kaufman, Cecilia Mills, Marita Melby and Virginia Schmitt, and Sophomore Rola Nuss. The Coaching Staff consisted of Don Williams, Rick Riffel, and Pam Thorpe. 69 X RHS grapplers were outstanding in 1979 with a 9-0 dual record, the first undefeated team season in Russell's his- tory. The MSAA League Champion wrestlers won with surprising scores and teamwork in regular season events. Russell hosted the Regionals, but the Broncos were unable to put together the team effort it had experienced through the season and only Kelly Tilton and Gary Coady finished in the top three to qualify for sub-state action. The squad was strong and sound under the coaching of Victor Lyczak with the assistance of Les Kinsler. Early in the year a concert was held at Rup- penthal Middle School. The spring ended the year with the combined concert held in the high school gymnasium. In addition to beauti- ful vocal renditions, the concerts held visual surprises, too, with slide shows, lights and spe- cial effects adding atmosphere and dignity to the performances. The vocal classes included girls glee club and choir. An extra-curricular special choir of selected voices added greatly to the overall program. Mr. Jim Balthazar, vocal music in- structor in his first year at RHS, has been quite sucessful and innovative. All participants worked both for community and school concerts including special presen- tations for assemblies, winter wonderland and baccalaureate. 1979 proved to be quite a pro- ductive and beneficial year for all involved. 90 91 Key Club Benef its Community Key Club Is an International Service Organization sponsored by the Kwanis International and the local Kwanis Club of Russell. There was enough time to play two games and have refresh- ments. The first game was the lifesaver race. Each player had one toothpick placed in his mouth and the lifesaver was passed down the line, on the toothpicks, without the help of human hands. The winning team was Donna Hopper’s—each player received a box of candy hearts. Cookies, red hots, candy hearts and punch were served as re- freshments. After every one ate, the last game was played. Every- one received a piece of paper, and was instructed to fold it in half and wait. Some did, some didn’t. The idea of the game was to tear out a paper heart behind the back! The winners received a chocolate heart. The winners were Judy Saryerwinne with first and Lisa Norris with second. The winners of the Valentine rally were Marita Selby and Con- nie King. They each received a tube of red hots.
