To help combat the cold, they wore royal blue pants with the traditional red and blue sweaters. Even though they sported mittens to reduce the numbness in their hands, their clapping could still be heard amid the shout- ing and cheering. Despite the cold, they managed to keep yo the spirit throughout the season. Ramona Rohr, Junior, headed the squad for the 1977- 78 school year. The Broncos finished the season with one league win against five league defeats. Overall Russell finished the season at two and seven. Injuries were the main reason for a sixth place league finish. The Broncos were unable to keep the entire squad healthy all at once. With the injury problem, Coach La- Mar was able to take a good look at what will be next year's squad. At season's end, the seniors were a tired bunch as they gave their best to take up the slack caused by injuries. Russell had two players earning spots on the All-League first offensive team. Perry Gee was named All-League offensive center and Barry LaMar was selected as wide re- ceiver. Earning berths on the All-League honorable men- tion squad were Greg Schulte at linebacker, David Morris and Steve Parker at defensive halfbacks. LaMar was the league's leading pass catcher and Schulte led the Bronco defense. Seniors were Randy Boxberger, Kevin Cook, Tony De- Marco, Kevin Dinkel, Richard Fritz, John Gasson, Perry Gee, Phil Kuhn, Barry LaMar, John Mai, Tim Miller, David Morris, Jim Oliva, Greg Schulte, and Matt Selby. Juniors participating were Tim Boxberger, Allen Ginther, Tim Goodheart, Robert Hecker, Tim Hopper, Harry LaMar, Blaine Maier, Dave Mullins, Steve Parker, and Randy Powell. It's really an aesthetic experience for them. Sure, there's punishment and pain in there, but they're not running for the pain. There are few feelings in life that lift you as high as when you've done the best you can, really laid it all out.'' The 1977 Russell High Cross Country Team did just that this year, competing in eight meets, defeating 37 teams, and logging over 270 road miles in practice. Vocal Music Has Concerts And Fun Boys Glee Club The Boys Glee Club is a new group this year. Designed to allow for greater participation in vocal music by the student body, this group contains experienced singers as well as those with relatively little experience. They performed in a Thanksgiving Assembly for the student body, a Fall concert, and the spring concert. Many of these young men are looking forward to even more par- ticipation in vocal music activities. Girls Glee Club Girls Glee continues to attract students with varied in- terests. Various styles of music were performed in their appearances in the Fall concert, Thanksgiving Assem- bly, and Spring Concert. Several girls were selected for participation in the state music contest. A Fun-loving group, the glee club has done a good job this year and promises to provide good entertainment in the years to come. Not Pictured: Brad Wagner, Sr. Representative and Harry Shaw, Treasurer 68 The Russell High bands were very active this year participating in many performances and displaying a great deal of talent. The season was highlighted by the combined half-time show at the Homecoming game which featured senior trumpeter Dave Erwin, senior drummer Randy Brungardt, and senior trombonist Brad Wagner, on the theme from the box-office smash 'ROCKY'. The band also participated in several pa- rades , and rode the flatbeds for the annual bonfire and snakedance. The marching bands, under the direction of Mr. Roger Dill and Mr. Dan King, have put on a fine showing this past year. 69 This year's Symphonic band composed of mostly ju- niors and seniors and the Concert band containing soph- omores and freshmen entertained many audiences. Throughout the year many events were attended by the bands. The bands played at the Christmas.and Winter concerts. A Pops concert was given at the end of tbe year and was enjoyed by all involved. The highlight of this year's music activities was the three day tour by the Stampers, which ended at the Tri- State Music Festival in Enid, Oklahoma. Stops on the tour included Abiline, Chapman, Emporia High School and Emporia State University. Aside from the tour, the Stampers also played for the MSAA Basketball Tourna- ment, the Christmas Assembly and the Pop Concert. This year's band followed the team all the way to Colby for sub-state play-off action. Through many hours of practice and dedication of each member the band overwhelmed many home and out-of-town crowds. Who will ever forget the way the band could wind up the spectators with the NBC Sports Theme. The 1977-1978 Drum Majorettes led the Stomping Bronco Band throughout the marching season. They were chosen to represent the first and second hour bands. Serving her second year, Nancy Bender was se - lected as head majorette. Patty Davidson serving her first year as the assistant. Both girls served the band well and did a fine job. 74 Dawn Patrol Has Successful Year The Russell High Dawn Patrol Drill Team once again enjoyed a very successful year during 1977-78. Cathy Nesbit returned this year as the group director. Led by Captain Sylvia Siemers and Lieutinent Barb Pohlman, the Drill Team was featured during the Pre-game show at each home football game, and presented a stunning half- time performance at Homecoming. The squad's basketball performances included their half-time show at Winter Sports. An outstanding perfor- mance was given by the girls at the annual Pop Concert. Members of the '77-78 squad were: Lisa Boomhower, Suzanne Chegwidden, Sherri Burks, Kim Flegler, Mary Dick, Lynn Farrell, Susan Christians, Melody Selby, Denise Boomhower, Diane Bames, Kim Graf, Teri Hitchcock, Annis Schawo, Sharon Wade, Dorrene Waugh, Jody Hitchcock, Marlene Buehler, Sylvia Siemers, Barb Pohlman, Connie Shaffer, and Lisa Bridges. These squads performed during the half-time of the home football games, including Homecoming game and parade. They also performed at the annual Pop Concert. Members of the first squad for the 1977-78 school year were: Linda Dreiling, Connie King, Lori Gustason, and Phyllis Louder. The second squad members were: Tracy Homewood, Michelle Mai, and Robin Pace. Not pictured is Alison Kuhn. The RHS twirlers once again gave many fine show- ings during the 1977-78 school year. Besides this they also performed at all of the home football games. Marching in the Homecoming Parade was also a scheduled event. The final exhibition of their talent was their performance at the Pop Concert. Head twirl- er for the year was Robin Mai. Chris King was the feature twirler. Other members were: Mary Mello, Kim Hogan, Laurie Rohleder, and Stacy Smith. Me- lissa Stoppel was chosen as alternate. IX lx Mrs. McThing Hits The Stage For the first time in four years, the RHS All-school play was a straight production, (non musical) Though it is called a straight play, it was definitely not uncomical. The two November evening performances were ones of fun and enjoyment for all of its viewers. 1 'Mrs. McThing'' is a comedy about a middle-aged woman who learns, with the help of two children and a laughable bunch of hoodlums, the true meaning of caring. This year was also the first time that two Jr. High stu- dents were cast in leading roles. Shannon Flagler and Todd Bridges did a wonderful job portraying the two nine year-old children in the play. The play was directed by Jerry Crenshaw. The cast and crew members include: Shawn Flagler, stage manager; Austin Covalt, Lowell Underwood, Perry Gee, Tim Mill- er, Construction; Margaret Lutton, Alison Kuhn, Paint- ing; Judy Trombley, Rebecca Witt, Publicity; Mrs. Richard Eggert, Costumes; Jerry Crenshaw, Maia Al- brecht, Mitch Castor, Karl Frerichs, Lighting; Dan Den- ning , Lissa Lutton, Alan Templeton, Props; Mrs. Jerry Crenshaw, Stacy Smith, Monica Mahoney, Katherine Eggert, LaRue Covalt, Makeup; Perry Gee, Tim Miller, Matt Selby, Eric Davidson, Grips; Jill Holland, Mrs. Howard V. LaRue III; Chris King, Carrie; Monica Ma- honey, Sybil; Debbe Nelson, Ewa Lewis; Katherine Eg- gert, Maude Lewis; Cheryl Kiel, Grace Lewis; Todd Bridges, Boy (Howay); Steve Line, Chef (Ellsworth); Larry Froelich, Virgil; Tim Miller, Dirty Joe; Matt Selby, Stinker; Eric Davidson, Poison Eddie Schellen- bach; Connie Shaffer, Mrs. Schellenbach; Shannon Flagler, Mimi (Girl); MarkThowe, Policeman; Cynthia Street, Mrs. McThing (Ugly Witch); Patty Davidson, Mrs. McThing (Beautiful Witch). “Babes In Arms” Charming Drama ' 'Babes in Arms'' an all school musical was presented to a very thrilled audience on April 7th and 8th, 1978, at the Middle School auditorium. The orchestra, production staff, and crew admirably supported the actors chosen from the student body. The cast of characters included: Tracy Resley, Patty David- son, Eric Davidson, Matt Selby, Shawn Flagler, Tim Miller, Chris King, Charley Trapp, Kim Flegler, Cheryl Keil, and Steve line. Other characters were: Monte Selby, Tom Riedel, Kevin Davidson, Brent Wood, Larry Froelich, MarkThowe, Cynthia Street, Connie Shaffer, Stacy Smith, Jodi Hitchcock, Melody Selby, Connie King, Gayne Novotny and Margaret Lut- ton. Hard work and tremendous cooperation combined to make ' 'Babes in Arms one of the better inductions at RHS. Fifteen musical numbers enhanced the professional production and delighted the audience. 82 Forensics Squad Has a Good Year This year, the RHS Forensic team had five new faces. Patty Davidson, Chris Zamarzla, Katherine Eggert, Connie Shaffer and Cindy Street exper- ienced a busy season their Sophomore year. Famil- iar faces to tiie team were Senior, Judy Trombley and Juniors, Brad Keil and John Mello. In addition to participating in Forensics, which was only a nine-weeks class this year, the class prepared a play called ' 'The Invention'' which they planned to perform for the two grade schools. All the direction, costuming and set design was done by the students. NFL is a club in school that few, who are not in it, know much about. No it is not the National Football League. It is the National Forensic League. Students who have taken Debate or Foren- sics are eligible to be in the club and their results in respective tournaments are added together on a point system. As the numbers get higher the mem- bers are awarded a pin. The quality of the stone (ranging from a saphire to a pair of rubies) tells how high the student is on the point scale. 84 “Talkies” Bring In Rare Reviews Resolved: that the Federal Government should establish a comprehensive program to regulate the health care sys- tem in the United States.'1 The varsity debate squad used this resolution to win two Sweepstakes Trophy's (Wichita and Salina Central) and a second place trophy for the Re- gional (which Russell hosted). Also, Barbara Pohlman and Lissa Lutton won second place at TMP. The award winning debators worked long hard hours to achieve their successes. Hundreds of demanding hours, miles of traveling time, many late-night planning sessions, thousands of note cards and painful writer's cramp may sound like less than desir- able activities. But if they add up to satisfaction in a job well done, personal dignity, poise and recognition of ef- forts , such sacrifices are well worth the making. Varsity debators were: Katheren Eggert, Cindy Street, Barbara Pohlman, Brad Keil, Connie Shaffer, John Mello, Lissa Lutton and Mark Thowe. Mike Werner and Maia A1 - brecht not pictured. Apprentices Win First 1st Award The novice debaters had a much different season than the varsity squad did. At Phillipsburg, Margaret Lutton and Ali- son Kuhn won a first place trophy. This was the only first place trophy won by either of the squads. They assisted the Varsity team in the hosting of the Regional tournament as well. The squad only won that one award but their main task this year was not to debate so much as to learn HOW to debate. There is a certain air of confidence that every GOOD deba- ter must have. This confidence is reflected in the way they stand and speak, the way they wear their clothes and the way they 'get out' of difficult situations in a debate. Novice debaters were: Mitch Castor, Barbara Knacksteadt, Margaret Lutton, Linda Coyle, Lynette Janne, Alison Kuhn, Kevin Hampl, Brenda Mudd, Mr. Crenshaw (the coach) Stacy Smith, Carol Beaver, Marci Shawo, Karl Frerichs, and Da- vid Zachman. Jodi Hitchcock and Charlie Trapp not pic- tured. 8S Dramatists Put On “X-mas” Play This year's drama club was much more active than it has been in the past few years. In addition to helping with the two all-school plays, the dramatists worked up a play of their own. '' THE TROUBLE WITH X-MAS PRE- SENTS 11 delighted the children of both grade schools, preceding the Christmas Holidays. Throughout most of the winter they worked in the shop making cattle guards, trailers, feeders, and many other projects. One weekend they had a safety program at the rest areas on Interstate 70 and served coffee and donuts. On another weekend they marked machinery for local farmers. In Feb. and March they had two more fund rais- ing poprojects, the sale of calendars and meats. In the spring they began working on the farm again. His very distinctive British-type accent his stylish long hair and his boyish face made him the heart throb of many a school girl. John was involved in several school activities including football, track, and the school play. His thoughts on his one-year home were simple: ' 'The countryside is the greatest, but you're not too far from a bit of action in the city.'1 Residing with Dr. and Mrs. Merkel, John enjoyed many out of town trips with them as well as relaxing at home playing pool with 'The Doc.' For those of us who really knew John, his leaving will be a sad time, but he says, ' 'I'll be back.'' f ACUIIT Faculty Directs Student Players Mr. Selby, here for his second year as the Superinten- dent, had to cope with many unexpected emergencies: a couple of snow days and a gas leak. The re - alization that this would be the last time that the class would be together brought tears to the eyes of many. It was a long rocky road to Graduation, and with this ac- complishment of the Senior class came the final curtain of their years at RHS. r ‘teSp • xtW:WAV 'WAV.V.V.. „7 ••......V V.V .VTmV.VmV Ar . •••••••§••• •■ V.vA W V. • i 4 ''A ' Kf , V • •.
