This year our theme was Crown the New King of the Jun- gle. We celebrated Spirit Week with decorated halls and special days for showing spirit. We had a noisy car caravan and a big bon- fire that fired-up everyone for the following day. When the HOME- COMING parade rallied down Main St. excitement was high. It was a colorful, crazy day! That night was even better. We crowned our '76 HOMECOMING Queen Lisa Mighell and King Jeff Seirer. Candidates for HOMECOMING royalty were Terry Stewart, Shelley Schmidt, (Lisa), Dan James, Dennis Albrecht, and and (Jeff). Attendants to the royal court were Seniors Denise Baker and escort Eric Grass; Juniors Debbie Nowak and escort Matt Selby; Sophomores Janet Tiffin and es- cort Gary Schmidtberger; and Freshmen Shawn Flagler and escort Curt Cobb. Crown bearer was J. J. Lyczak with flower girl Cory Michaelis. HOMECOMING was a brilliant victory in every way. RHS Broncos beat the Lyons 26-7. Following the game the rock band Illusions featured at the traditional HOMECOMING dance. 6 77 Seniors Of RHS Have Achieved Goals The Senior class was guided this year by President Cecilia Shumaker, Vice-President Warren Frerichs and Secretary-treasurer Donna Olson. As Seniors our class had opportunities that previous Senior classes have never had. One of these opportuni- ties was that of taking college courses in five different subjects to earn college credit. Also, Senior pictures are in color for the first time ever. We Seniors of RHS 1976-77, feel that we have achieved very highly in the field of academics and extra-curricular activities. Regarding our achievements and accomplishments, we rank ourselves among the top of all graduating Senior classes. 8 TIMA CHRISLER DEBBIE CARTER MIKE O IHNELL -msr ii SHELLY DRISCOLL M1 ■ If KURT RENDA EHRLICH LYNN DUMLER KAREN EHrSU w ■ Vi TAMMY Vi + Mfc ... Frosh 5-2 Record Place 2nd In League The Freshmen football squad compiled a 5-2 record on the season, and placed second in the MSAA League. The only two losses of the season came to league opponents Pratt and Thomas More Prep. TMs Freshman team easily overwhelmed its oppo- nents, as indicated by such games as Russell 57-Nick- erson 0, Russell 41 -G. B. Harrison 6, Russell 44-Ly- ons 14. As a total the team scored 324 points throughout the year as compared to the opponents scores of 58. This shows that the Freshmen averaged 46 points per game, and opponents eight. The nucleus of the scoring came from a strong back- field composed of Curtis Cobb, David Kuehn, and Curt Peirano. Looking at this team and its accomplished efforts, Russell High will have a fine group of young men competing at the varsity level next season. Cross Country offers little recognition, and it takes tons of guts to get out there every day and run your heart out. This year's CC squad can surely attest to that fact. However, 1976 turned out to be a fine year for the team even though it was a very young one. Steve Hitchcock was the only returning Senior Letterman and led the squad skillfully as Team Captain. Bob Householter was the other Senior and was also the recipient, by unanamous decision, of the Gold- bricker Award. Freshmen members were Teri Hitch- cock, Annette Mahoney, Milton Wick, and Mike Werner. Sophomores were Bobby Oliva, Kevin Eas- ter, Scott Young, John Mello, and Frank Shulte, Mark Walters was the only Junior runner. Their trusty manager was Mark Radke. This was a historic year for the CC squad, as they acquired their first female runners. Teri Hitch- cock and Annette Mahoney, in Coach Roswum's and the team's opinion, added much color to our team and were also very hard workers. The season's high point was a 5th place team finish at Clay Center and the best outing time was the Pratt Invitational. The team had many rewarding experiences in- cluding watching a college race at Lindsborg and. at that same race, seeing Tony O'Brien, the 1973 NAIA Cross Country Champion. At the end of the season the squad was accountable for 31 wins and 49 lossess. Next Season the squad will be facing strong teams. We have the stuff, though, to run right alongside those tough teams. We will do it. 30 VARSITY TEAM RESULTS MEET PLACE Wamego 16 Clay Center 5 Russell 4 Pratt 4 Lyons Hays 5 12 League (Lamed) 4 Regional (Hays) 7 TOP RUNNER PLACE S. Hitchcock 42 S. Hitchcock IS B. We have, however, played many young ladies throughout the season to give each of them some playing experience for their future years. This was a tough year to be a young team in our league and to be assigned the Regional we attended. A majority of the opposition this season has been seasoned seniors who play very fine ten- nis. In closing, the entire squad and myself would like to extend our sincere thanks to everyone who has made this year's Broncette tennis season possible - the faculty ad- ministration, student body, parents, Russell Daily News, KRSL, my husband, just to name a few. THANKS! The Broncette Squad includes: SENIORS- Alison Froelich, Lisa Mighell, Brenda Peirano, and Cecilia Shumaker; JUNIORS- Barbara Hamel, Jill Marshall, Denise Mighell, Trudy Raben, and Kris Thomas; SOPHOMORES- Gwenna Green, Vanessa Malleck, LaRissa Marshall, Judy Saryer- winnie, and Carol Zordel; FRESHMEN- Shari Albrecht, Patty Davidson, Lynn Farrell, Shawn Flagler Kim Ho- gan, Teri Powell, Lynette Shannon, and Cindy Street. The Broncettes were coached by Ginny Honomichl, with the assistance of Bronc her pet dog. A New Team Volleys Through First Season The 1976-77 school year saw the beginning of a new sport, girls' volleyball. Although the team had a record of only 2-9 in its first year, there is a good chance of improvement with five returning lettermen. Five seniors lettered, including Pam Schmidt, Ka- ren Nowak, Stacey Anderson, Maria Marchiori, and Audrey Ptacek. One junior, Deretha Waugh, and one freshmen, Patty Krier, received letters. Also so hon- ored were sophomores Carmen Ptacek, Jan Williams, and Laura Dolezal. Coaching chores were handled by first year mentor, Mr. Williams. Captains for the team were Seniors Aud- rey Ptacek and Stacey Anderson. Managerial duties were taken care of by Judy Trombley and Kathy Pace. The volleyball B team was consistently on the win- ning end as they finished the season with a record of 20-8. 10-15- 6 Osborne 15- 5-15 5-16-13 Victoria 15-14-15 12-13 Lamed 15-15 7-15-10 Pratt IS- 7-15 13-15-15 Hoisington 15- 9-12 5- 6 Nickerson 15-15 11-11 Marion 15-15 15-15 Osborne 10- 1 10- 9 Pratt 15-15 6-15-11 Hoisington 15- 4-15 5-11 Hays High 15-15 The scores on the left are Russell's. Also some Spanish club members went to Mexico during the summer for some interesting experiences. Mrs. Whinery had 35 members in her club this year, and hopes for more next year. They did this by publishing the monthly The Pony Express and the annual Roundup. This group of Seniors formed the biggest Journalism class ever to hit RHS. The 1977 Roundup also has 14 full color pages, another first at Russell High. These students were assigned different positions at the beginning of the school year that determined their job on the school records. Reesa Scott and Shirley Francis were co-editors of The Pony Express, and Lisa Mighell and Shelley Schmidt were co-editors of the Roundup. These girls put in a lot of hard work and late hours to see that deadlines were met. Other members of the class and their positions were: THE PONY EXPRESS STAFF-Cecilia Shu- maker, News Editor; Larry Pozalek, Editorial Editor; Le- Roy Holt, Features Editor; Kent Boxberger, Sports Editor; and Bill Briscoe, Advertising Manger. THE ROUNDUP STAFF-Matt Boxberger, Academics Editor; Dan James, School Life Editor; Karen Nowak, Classes Editor; Dennis Albrecht, Sports Editor; and Lisa Krueger, Activities Editor. Everyone did his job and took pride in his work. But most of all, this group of Seniors had fun. Their journa- lism days will be in their memories long after they leave RHS. Jens.
