Future Farmers Work Hara' The Russell chapter of FFA has again followed a busy schedule of which maintaining a milo test plot on the Steinert farm, buying nineteen hogs for a feeder pig co-op, and operating the Kiwanis sponsored gilt ring were only a part. In the District Co-op Quiz contest the Russell group placed second. They also placed second in the District Officers Training Program and participated in the state convention and state judging contest. The boys won the District Crops judging Contest and the Regional Land judging Contest, and attended several livestock and dairy contests. Other activities included distribution of 500 FFA calendars, holding the annual FFA Sweetheart Dance, having a watermelon feed and hamburger fry for prospective freshmen and FFA dads, presenting radio programs on farm safety and FFA activities, and holding the annual FFA Banquet. The club maintains and FFA scrapbook throughout the year. This year they recommended two members for tne State Farmer Degree. They also name an Honorary Chapter Farmer at the annual banquet. 43 JUNIOR FFA OFFICERS--FRONT ROW: Frank Laubhan, Secretary, David Berry, Reporter-3 Frank Me- theny, Sentinelg Bob Lundy, Vice- Presidentg Lynn Schmidt, Treasurer, Richard Michaelis, President. 1.5 4-W s ...Qi J . 1 . KAY CLUB Kay Club is a service organization with objectives to con- tribute to the betterment of the school and community. This year the Kays helped organize and carry out the Kay-Kayette District Conference held in Russell. The boys helped in con- structing a backdrop to be used for assemblies in the gymna- sium. During the Summer, four members attended the International Convention at Long Beach, California. Here the club received honorable mention for its scrapbook and its achievement report. In the service area, the club has sold tickets for VFW, had a car wash to get money to send members to the convention, helped the Kiwanis with the pancake feed, helped with the bloodmobile, had a Salute to Teachers day, and sold peanut brittle to raise funds. Future plans include an activity sign for the school and sending members to the convention at Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. Girls Athletic Association promotes many recreational opportunities for girls at Russell High. To begin the vear thev had a picnic for all members and those girls who wanted to join to introduce interested girls to GAA and its activities . GAA membership is based on a point system. Girls receive points for par- ticipation in such activities as basketball, volleyball, and tennequoit intramurals and bowling in either of the two organized leagues. Bowling tournaments are held at Christmas and at the end of the regular bowling season. Members attended a volleyball playday and basketball playday held at Fort Hays this year. Other activities were freshmen initiation, a party for all mem- bers, a basketball game between students and faculty members, a bowling ban- quet for all participants in the bowling program, and a special meeting given by janet Miller on her trip to Vermont. The answer lies in the fact that Kayettes is a service organization. It also is for the purpose of character development and leadership training. Religion, personality, leadership, service appreciation, and recreation are the six objectives of the organization and are represented by the six sides of the insignia. The point system, planned club programs, conferences, and camp set the pattern by which each club may make the objectives an important part of its program. This year the Kayettes and Kays hosted the District Conference on Oct. 25. The day was spent in discussion groups, general sessions, and recreational periods, and climaxed by a banquet, presentation of awards, and the District President's address. Kayettes engage in projects that benefit school, community, and country. At Christ- mas time the girls donated gifts to the mental institutions. They mixed fun and the Christmas Spirit by having a caroling party for the hospital and rest home. The club also bought a Christmas tree for use in the school. The purpose of the junior Classical League is to encourage among young . people an interest in and appreciation of the civilization, language, literature, and art of ancient Greece and Rome, and to give them some understanding of the debt of our own culture to that of classical antiquity. This year the Russell J. C. L. , under the sponsorship of Mrs. Rita Whinery, - carried out many projects which were interesting and profitable. The main mone -making projects were the food sales held during semester exams y . The year began with a formal initiation of new members. During the Christmas season joint meeting was held with other foreign language classes. New Era football as brought to Russell by Coach Bones Nay, a man to whom winning was the commonplace, was not truly represented in the 2-7 sea- son record set by the Broncos . Coach Nay set up the objectives of giving more boys a chance to play, attaining top physical form , and build- ing support for the squad in the players, the school, and the community. Through- out the season the coaching staff com- pleted these projects: Press Dayg Soap Scrimmageg weekly football news letters, player-parent meetingg Football Year- bookg and Football Dinner. These activities brought the follow- ing results: Fans turned out in two re- cord breaking crowds and followed the team well to out-of-town gamesg No player had to be carried from the field in any game, Five games were lost by fewer than 8 pointsg A record number C265 received lettersg More boys played C32 in one gamej. The Broncos were hampered by lack of speed and size, but they never let down in hustle and desire. Seniors worked hard and helped build a solid foundation for the future. In the win column the season showed a deficit, but for building, the contribution was a definite plus . F or Regular Season Finishing regular season play with a 15-3 overall record, the Bronco bas- ketball squad gained Lmdisputed possession of the West Central Kansas League crown. The fact that two of these defeats were in league competition indicates the style of play in the. WCKL. In midseason the Broncos won the Mid-State Tournament which was held at Buhler, defeating Hillsboro and Buhler to take the title. After dropping a game to Lyons by a one point margin, they then had a string of nine victories to close out the season. 'Iwo of these wins avenged previous losses to Great Bend and Larned. Russell began the season with Cann, Simmons, and Mohl as the only re- turning lettermen. These three and Mike Anderson are seniors.
