Several members of the Russell J.C.L. Club attended the state convention held in Kansas City, Kansas. Russell has the honor of one member of the J.C.L. Club being state vice-president. The Kayettes, with 100 members and two sponsors, began this year by sending five girls to Kayette camp last August at Rock Springs. Fall Conference, held at Hoxie, was attended by four delegates and one sponsor. There they were encouraged by the state sponsor. Miss Vinson, to build a better club and self. The annual Thanksgiving school assembly was prepared and presented by club members. The main money-making project for the year was the concession stands at both foot- ball and basketball games. These funds were used to send CARE packages, and a Meals for Millions drive was held to obtain pennies for the needy. The girls also prepared tray favors for the hospital and old folks home. In March Miss Vinson made her annual visit to the club where she gave a talk, helped them plan their activities and also congratulated them on the fine work of the organization. Sponsor. JootUall The Russell High Bronco football team won five games and lost four in completing their most success- ful season of the last four years. They showed marked improvement under Coach Homer Salter, who completed his second season as Head Football Coach of Russell High School. The Broncos, who plaved the roughest schedule in the school's history, showed early signs of their strength by defeating Abilene 14-13. They lost their second game 19-0 to the strong Great Bend team, but came back with three straight victories over Hays 32-12, Pratt 25-6 and Lincoln 31-7. They hit a rough streak when they lost to Dodge City 47-6 and Hoisington 25-18. They lost their last home game o Garden City 20-0 after holding the oppenents to a 0-0 tie at halftime. The Broncos only lose ten Seniors and have very good prospects for next year. Three of the back- field men that started the last game will be back for next season along with a group of linemen that saw a lot of action. Coach Salter When the time came to pick an All W.C.K.L. team, Russell had two boys on the first team, Kenneth Wright at end and Ronnie Gee in the backfield. Geral Swick made the second eleven, and Dan Bernard and J.R. Dumler were Honorable Mention choices. The B team showed they would be helping the Bronco cause in few years by winning two, losing two, and tieing one. They started the season with a 20-0 victory over Great Bend. They fJayed to a 6-6 draw with Hays and ost 26-12 to Hoisington in the next two games. The B team picked up their second win 31-6 against Lincoln and fell 20-6 to Larned in their last game of the season. Coach Balding 63 J.D. The Freshman team played five games this season winning one and tieing one while they lost three. Losing 39-12 to Hoisington in their first game of the season, the Frosh followed that up with a 13-13 tie with Hays. The Pratt Frosh beat Russell 46-6. In a second encounter with the Hays Freshman, the young Broncos picked up their first and lone victory of the season, 12,7. They lost their last game 39-13 to Great Bend, finishing their season. This year's Homecoming was the most successful of recent years. The Broncos brought home a Home- coming victory for the first time in eight years. The whole squad shone as they scalped the Hays High Indians. The Homecoming parade, floats, and other festivities were the best that the school has produced for a Homecoming game in years. There was more enthusiasm among the students and players than the school has ever seen. _______________ Homecoming attendants and escorts: Freshmen, Jerry Couch and Lavena Smith.
