Trophies were won in tournaments at Newton, Topeka, Dodge City, Garden City, Wyandotte, Haven, and Hutchinson. At Great Bend, Russell representatives were named out- standing boy and girl speakers. The Russell Debate tournament was one of the lar est in the state. There were 92 teams from 25 schools. The tournament was won by Seminole, Oklahoma. Shawnee Mission High School placed second. The proposition for this year was Re- solved: That the Federal government should initiate a policy of free trade among nations friendly to the United States. By placing in the district tournament, Russell maintained an unbroken record of eighteen consecutive years to take part in the state tournament. 2 l f Q we V001 Q, 1 SYDNEY STOEPPELWERTH T217 IUDIE MILLS WX fx lv' l vu '. f H, 5 xr ,q X MARGARET IGRKMAN Ejlovey JVM , N 41-A SARAH SHAFFER 4.. Shown above is the Freshmen football team which compiled a record of three wins against two losses this past season. They opened their campaign with two shutout victories over Ellinwood, l4 to O, and I-lays, 26 to 0. Next they squeezed by Hoisington, 31-27. The young Broncos closed their season with losses to Great Bend, l5 to 31, and Lucas, 27 to 41. In the Lucas game our boys were up against sophomores as well as freshmen. Although there were only seventeen fresh- men boys out for football this year, Coach Thornburg is to be congratulated on the fine job he did in preparing these boys for varsity competition next year. The Bronco B squad was composed of these same freshmen plus a few of the varsity re- serves. They found the going a bit rough, dropping decisions to Great Bend, Hoisington, and Lincohi while beating Ellis and battling Hays to a tie. The boys off the B squad of this year will be carrying a good deal of the load for the varsity of next season, and the experience they received in these games should assert itself in the coming campaign.
