KAYETTES The Kayette Club, sponsored by Miss Rena Gilson, joyfully got underway at the beginning of the year with 75 girls becoming members. The October meeting was one of the most enjoyable of all the meetings. Some of the girls gave a Halloween skit. Miss Wanda Mae Vinson, the state sponsor of Kayettes, enter- tained all the girls in high school with her very interesting talk on 'Are You All There.' The club sent two girls to the annual Kayette Camp at Rock Springs last summer and expects to send four girls this year. Three girls journey- ed with Miss Gilson to the annual Kayette Con- ference which was held this year at Lincoln. At Christmas time, the Kayettes sent a Care package overseas: and gave to the Community Chest here in town. Then later in the year they collected money for 'Meals for Millions. At the football and District Basketball Tournament, the Kayettes had the concession stand. This year for the first time the Kayette Club received the 1000 Point Award for service. All the girls in Kayettes are to be congratulated on their willingness to cooperate and make this year in Kayettes a great success. The 1953-1954 'B' football squad at Russell High School was composed of twenty freshmen, sixteen sophe- omores, and five juniors. From these figures it can be seen that while we had many returning experienced players we also had many inexperienced players. The 'B' football squad played five games winning three of them. Many of the members of the 'B' squad also played on our varsity team. Those players were: Bill Caughey, Ronnie Combs, Don Dietz, Roger Dumler, Bill Redd, Harold Stoppel, and Kenneth Wright. The results of the 1953-1954 'B' Squad prove that the 1954-1955 varsity team should be very outstanding. B SQUAD FOOTBALL SCORES Opponents Ellis . . . .... . . 20 Lincoln . . . . . Wayne Dumler gets the tip to send the Bronc's down the The 1955-54 Bronco's compiled an impressive record of 21 wins and 6 defeats. ln compiling this record the Bronco s displayed the brand of basketball for which they are so well known. The team as a whole continued to be a consistent winner as have the teams of the past several years. The season was high-lighted by the Broncos when they took fourth place in the State Tournament. Previous honors included second place at the Beloit Invitational Tournament, first place in the District Tournament, and first place in the Regional Tournament. Perhaps the thing the whole state was watching and waiting for, was the possibility that Russells Bronco's might be the first team ever to capture the state title three consecutive vears. But this possibility met with disaster when the Bronco's were defeated in the semi-finals bv Sacred lleart. Here is a recap on the highlights of the season. The Bron- co s opened with an upset victory over the heavily favored Sacred Heart Knights. After defeating Ells- worth in a non-league scrap, the Bronco's started league play by soundly trouncing the Dodge City Demons 62 to 47. The Bronco's then tasted defeat for the first time at the hands of the Hays Cadets. During the Christmas holidays, the Bronco's iourneyed to Beloit for the lnvitationnl Tournament. After winning the first night the Bronco's fell in the finals to the Beloit Troians 52 to 40, The Bronc s returned to league play by troun- cin Larned and then lost to Pratt 59 to 42. Hut the Bronco's bounced back and won their next seven games in a row. ln this skein the Broncos had their best floor on a fast break offensive night of the season when they swamped Staf ford 81 to 54 Also the Bronc s handed Hays H1 its second defeat at Russell hands Then the Pratt Green backs came to Russell for the crucial contest that would decide first place in the league The Bronco s had an exceptionally cold night and fell to the Green backs 51 to 37 After squeaking Great Bend the Bronco s avenged an earlier defeat by the Hays Cadets by defeating them 48 to 41 The Bronco s closed their regular season s play by demolishing Stafford for the second time 70 to 46 In the District Tourney which was held in Russell the Bronco s advanced easily into the finals and in a thrilling contest defeated the Havs H1 Indians for the third time 58 to '57 After smashing lvons S to 55 the Bronco s moved into the finals of the Regional Tournament There thev defeated the Hays lli Indians for the fourth time by .he score of 49 to 41. The Bronco s opened the State Tournament in true fashion by humiliating Olathe 70 to 49. But the next night nothing seemed to go right for the Bronco s and they fell to the Sacred Heart Knights 51 to 51. The whole story is not in that six point loss. The Bronco s showed that they were true champions when they fought to within six points after being twentytwo points behind at the half. The next night the Bronc s lost a thrilling decision to Hayden that could have gone either way. Though the Bronco s did not take the Stare Champion- ship, they showed in their play during the season that they were indeed true Champions. it gl ? , ,134 , ,'.mHn ' i f FRONT ROW: Dick Belanger, jan Banker, Richard Hall, jerry Lally, Larry Kilian, and Coach Verl Anderson SECOND ROW Joe Lewis, Larry Hower, Marvin Watts, Denton Smith, Bill Redd, and Leo Clanton.
