High School, junior high and grade school students were members of the 53 piece orchestra. Activities of the Russell School Orchestra during the 1952-53 school year included the following: Program Music at the Junior play Our Miss Brooks g Concert at Raymond, Kansas, for the Raymond Rural High Schoolg Concert at Garden City, Kansas, for the Garden City High Schoolg and the Second AnnualJoint Concert with the Russell High School Chorus and Glee Clubs. Members of the orchestra performed for the Russell P. T. A. and entered the disuict music contest at Hays, Kansas in the spring. Gary Sick, Jack Dusay, Mary Ann Dumler, Peterson, and David Schwartz. ' s A The Russell High School debate squad took fourth place at the state debate tournament, which was held at Lawrence on January 30 -31. The team, which was composed of Mary Ann Dumler, Gary Sick, Jack Dusay and David Schwartz. with Marjorie Mahoney and Pat Wentworth as alternates, came through the tournament with five wins and seven losses. Three first -place trophies, re- presenting the Dodge City, Em - poria, and the District toumeys, were the three highest honor a- wards our squad received. At the Hutchinson tournament we won second place for which we re- ceived a trophy. The RHS debat - ers brought back third place tro- phies from the Topeka, E1Dorado and Wyandotte tournaments. The eight names which will ap - pear on these seven trophies are Jack Dusay, Mary Ann Dumler, David Schwartz, GarySick, Kent Peterson, Gordon Ryan, Marjorie Mahoney and Pat Wentworth. The debate squad this year end - ed up with a record of which Russell High students can be very proud.
