The chapters of the J.C.L. function much like classical clubs on the high school level. They have elected officers regularly scheduled meetings social affairs projects etc. Every spring a state meeting is held. 'vlembers of the J.C.L. from different parts of the state attend these meetings. Last year the meet- ing was held in Salina. All the members from Russell attended this meeting which proved to be interesting. State officers were elected the constitution was drawn up and a list of projects was made. One of the projects of the local club is to adopt two schools and help them begin J.C.L. chapters. The meeting will be in Great Bend this year. At the beginning of the year the J.C.L. initiated twelve freshman mem- bers. There are now twenty-two in the local club. Miss Flora Bigler is the sponsor of the group. Although the .T.C.L. is not as large as other clubs it is a very inter- esting and worthwhile club to which to belong. We should all be proud that we have such a fine organization in our high school. The RHS Debate Squad attended a total of thirteen debate tournaments in the high school year of 1950-'51, The first trip, however, was to Wichita on October 7, to attend a speech clinic and the second on October 28, to Hays for the same purpose. Since a student of debate can only participate in five tournaments, it was necessary to split the squad in order to have Russell represented in as many tournaments as possible. After eight weeks of preparation the squad split with half going to Pittsburg and the other half going to Salina on the week- end of November IO and 11. Russell faired well in these first tournaments of the year for a team at Salina went through the preliminary rounds undefeated but were downed in the semi-finals. That team was composed of Margaret Richardson and Anita Peterson. The next week-end of November 17- I 8 saw the Russell squad at Topeka and Winfield and the next tournamentwas held on December 1-2 at ElDorado. On the 8-9 of December Russell attended the Hutchinson tournament where again the team of Peter- son and Richardson were nosed out in the semi-finals. December 15-16 the RHS debators were the hosts of a tournament held in Russell. In this tournament Hutchinson took the first place honors. With the start of the new year the RHS squad started off with a bang by taking first and second place both at the Osborne tournament held on January 5. The winning teams were Anita Peterson, Gary Sick, Kent Peterson, and Dave Schwartz. Trudy Mills, Ronald Rogg, Jack Epler, and Frank Edwards coped second place. The other team consisting of Mary Ann Dumler, Phyllis Roller, Joycelynn Strecker, and Gwen Miller tied for third place making a grand total of first, second, and a tie for third for the debators. The big tournament of the year was at Wyandotte High School in Kansas City, Kansas. This trip was made on January 11- 12. At the same time Dodge City held their tournament and the team of Dave Schwartz, Kent Peterson, Gwen Mill, and Mary Ann Dumler advanced to the semi-finals but were upset before they got any further. The last tourney was held at Emporia on January 17- 18. Then came the district tournament which was at McPherson on January 27-28. For thirteen consecutive years the Russell squad had placed eitherfirst or second in the districtwhich enabled them to take part in the State Tournament., This year was to see if they could make it fourteen, and they did by coming in behind Hutchinson for second place, The State was held at Lawrence, on February 2-3, and here Russell was ranked as fourth in state class 'AA debating. The total record for the year was 147 wins and IO6 losses. Kent Peterson, Dave Schwartz, Anita Peterson, and Gary Sick won the Osborne t0Ul.'l'l3ITlC l'1I . Coach H.
