19 3g RUSSELL HIGH SCHOOL East Point, Georgia EAST POINT HISTORICAL SOCIETY East Point, Georgia RUSELL lGH SCHOOL 1500 Jefferson Ave. East Point, Ga. 30344 TABLE OF CONTENTS DEDICATION n 1922 because of lack of 1 housing facilities, bonds were floated in East Point for the purpose of erecting a new high school building. After the bonds were sold, the next problem was to find a site suitable for a building of this type. Ten acres of the site which our school occupies to- day were donated by Mr. John J. Egan; the provision of this donation was that the name of the school to be erected there should always be known as the William A. Russell High School, so named for an uncle of Mr. Egan. Shortly after- wards, Mr. Egan died, and his wife added five acres to her husband's donation, making a beautiful fifteen-acre lot for the site of the school building. Plans for erecting the build- ing were soon made, and in the summer and fall of 1922, the Russell High School build- ing was constructed. The en- tire student body in 1922-23 consisted of approximately three hundred pupils, thirteen of which were seniors. In the spring of 1928 the systems of education in East Point, Col- lege Park, and Hapeville were merged into one school and were operated under the Ful- ton County system. The graduating class of 1928-29 consisted of about seventy-five pupils. 2 2 Opening . ,w-W awfu$ 1...: oo 8 9 1... 3 2 9 1 L O O H C S H mm H L L .q .1 .d RUSS 66 Years of Tradition n the 1988 school year students and facul- ty prepared to make tracks in several dif- ferent ways. Seniors prepared to step out into the ttreal world of work or college. Teach- ers readied themselves to teach in a new situa- tion or on a different level. Rising Juniors and Sophomores awaited a move to the College Park campus to be joined by students from Co lege Park, Hapeville, and Woodland. Freshmen and Sub-Freshmen looked forward to staying 01 the Russell Campus with no upperclassmen around to look down on them. 1though the merger was eminent, school life went on as usual. The Tracks we made were the impressions Ru' sell High had made on those who loved her. Students, alumni, fac- ulty and staff began to under- stand how you really appreciate something when you lose it. Along with regrets that were felt toward the closing of Russell High School as we know it, stu- dents stayed optimistic by look- ing forward to the new opportuni- ties that a new larger school can offer. PAWS WITH CLAW v I 12 - Opening the season on a positive note with a win over Decatur and a strong showing against ninth ranked Lovett. The devastating drop in stocks and the Cuban uprisings in the Atlanta, Ga. and the Oakdale, Lo. Penitentiaries were a few of the trials and tribu- lations that occurred in the 1987-88 school year. However, there were just as many celebrations as tribulations. The United States was cele- brating the 200th Anniversary of its Constitution, the Winter Olympics kicked off and the candidates for the Presidential Election began cam- paigning. Lisa Massingale is one who set her goals high and worked and sacrificed to achieve them. Up at 3:15 every morning to drive across town to practice before school is very tiring and a test of dedicaiton. Even with the long practice days, travel to competition and an after school job, Lisa has managed to maintain a high grade point average. After high school Lisa hopes to tryout for the Olympic team or join an Ice Show, in addition to planning for college life. M. w a . :4, aw, , Lisa has skated in several competitions. FACULTY n the edge of Christmas break the ghost of Christmas past, present and future skipped Scrooge, and visited the Seniors. Losing by a three point margin, the coaching of Mr. Waters proved too be exceptional. The score ended up being 41-39. Thanks also goes to the General Man- ager. Ms. Sobleskie for organizing this exceptionally well played game. The Seniors won in their own special way by showing good sportsman- ship.... It seems difficult to know why things are not working out positively. One reason is we work from the outer mind. Become still and turn within saying to mind, world and affairs. Peace be still, peace be still, Peace be still. Speaking to the mind we are able to ask for a new direction. Ask and it shall be given, seek and ye shall find. Knock and it shall be opened to you. 80 move into action 90 the direction that is ahead of you, Don't be afraid, for the Lord God will go before you and he will not fail you or forsake you.
