SHADDIX: You have dedicated yourself to being the principal of Russell High School for nearly fifteen years, and we, the student body, feel that you should be com- mended. A letter such as this could nev- er fully express our deepest gratitudes and thanks. We hope this letter will, however, serve as o token of our love and appreciation for you to look back upon in the years that lie ahead. Not only have you been our leader- you have been our friend. Out of love, you disciplined us when we did wrong and were compassionate with us when we needed a shoulder to lean on. We have greatly benefited from your years of hard work and education, even though some of us have not yet realized this. You have helped mold us into the re- spectable young adults that we are now becoming, and you have influenced our fu- tures. We know that we haven't always deserved a man such as yourself, but we thank the Lord that we were blessed with your presence. We are the fruits of your labors and long-sufferings. Whoever fills your place as the head of the school will neither be able to fiII your shoes, nor the places in our hearts. WE LOVE YOU AND RE- SPECT YOU, AND WE WILL MISS YOU DEEPLY. He is usually cheerful and has a good word for you . . . a student; He has tremendous responsibilities and has continued to do an outstanding job for the school. The annual staff proudly dedicates the 1985-86 Pointer to Coach Benjamin Dukes. Coach Benny Dukes was raised in Zebulon, GA where he graduated from Pike County High School. During his secondary years at Pike County High School, he participated in all varsity sports except track. He received a full basketball scholarship to Berry College where he earned his Bachelor's Degree. He attended graduate school at the University of Georgia. He now holds a Lifetime Teaching Certificate in Health, Physical Education, and Driver's Education. He has taught in Pike County, Cobb County, and has taught at Russell High for five years. While at Russell, he has been the defensive coordinator for the football team; the head 8th grade basketball coach; head junior varsity basketball coach. He is currently the Athletic Coordinator, head varsity football coach, and head J.V. basketball coach. It is an interesting note that one of teams went two years without a defeat. ' coach . . . COACH . . . dukes DUKES One of Coach Dukes' philosopies is that uwinning or losing is not a true measure of anyone's worth. The true measure of a person comes 6 to 7 years afterwards. If that student succeeds then, the teacher's work is over . The Annual Staff and the student body finds Coach Dukes to be a very kind, and thoughtful human being. He never gives up hope and aiways keeps faith in his athletes and students. Coach Dukes was also quoted as saying that uhe hopes that he has touched each of his ath- letes as much as they have touched him . v.3 ; a:.-e:3 .. . . s we? Difficulties with on-out, fund-roising, and copy work provided mem- bers with opportunities to cope with their problems in somewhat unusual ways. ms pictures provel All-in-oll, this was truly a year of individuality on the port of the staff. Six Flags The days working at Six Flags are reward- ing in two ways. The most obvious one is the financial support that these students are giving to the annual. Without their con- tinued hord efforts the annual would find it difficult to raise the necessary money. The staff went three times this fall, and several students were at the bus all three times to help out. Special recognition goes to Den- orris Hawkins who has contributed his time many days, even after playing very strenu- ous football games the night before. ...Work Not only hard work, but fun can be had on a Six Flags outing. If the workers can find the energy, land they usually canl, the joys of the park are there for relaxation. At the end of the day, students can be found tired and exhausted from selling drinks, cooking hamburgers, moking pizzas, and even cleaning up. Special thanks to Lynn Rosor who drove the bus and to Coach Mathews who also gave his time to help. THANKS!!! The customer is always right. Tommy Brooks waits po- tiently for them to decide. Under the direction of Joy Hut- cherson, the 1985-86 bond underwent many changes. Halftime shows were enth- usioticolly narrated by the director. New and innovative shows were performed at halftime. Summer practices cut into vaca- tion, but the bond showed improvement throughout the year. Not only did they por- ticipote in the Christmas performance, half- time shows, but also entered several com- petitions. RUSSELLETTS DRILL TEAM S D. Since then, it has been a well respected part of the school and community. Its main goal is to assist in the total development of the high school student so that he or she can take his place as a responsible citizen in our free country. It teaches students respect, leadership, discipline, and instills them with a sense of patriotism. JROTC is especially valuable for students who plan to go into one of the armed forces. Junior Varsity Squad During the summer, the Junior Varsity Cheerleaders worked hard under the di- rection of a former Russell Cheerleader, Renae Simon. By the time fall arrived, the girls were well organized for the new sponsor Libby Sobleskie. The cheerleaders kicked off the sea- son with several fund raisers for new uni- forms. This was so successful that Capt. Lotrice Hardy and Co-Capt. Tesa Bivins had elections for a Secretary, Benita Henson and a Treasurer, Sonya White. During basketball season, the J.V.'s held a very successful dance. Several members of the squad cheered with the Varsity at a game held at the Omnit Junior Varsity Squad. Bottom: P. Darden, S. Lutrice Hardy is on ex- cellent choice for this honor. Jamie Vernon was selected as the Star Student for the 1985-86 school year. Jamie has been an outstanding student during his years at Russell. His choice for the Star Teacher was Libby Ste- phens. Congratulations to La- trice, Jamie, and Mrs. Stephens. Superintendent Dr. James Fox 8t Jamie Vernon Jamie Vernon 8t Libby Stephens National Honor Society: Andre Hardy, Romeo Brinkley, Jeff Soms, Art Club. Noel Pressley, Ricky Fombro, Mr. Burgess, Sponsor Tommy Lupo and Andrea Cantrell Carl Breedling As the staff looks over the year, truly it turned out to be a year of individual effort. The usual traditional events such as Homecoming, Sporting events, and graduation took place as scheduled But the individual effort of the faculty, administration, and student body contributed to the success of these famlhar occossions. Mr, Shaddix's surprise announcement of his retirement effective at the end of the second quarter stunned both the faculty and the students At the time of the annual's last deadline, the new principal had not yet been named. We, the annual staff, feel sure that whoever takes over will find Russell to be a unique school. The students have proven many times that through individual effort the school has remained one to be proud of. A new superintendent, Dr. James Fox, brought some innovative ideas into the County. His idea of getting the business community involved with the educational process was most successful. One of the new programs was the Fulton First Week which brought the business community into the schools. The process of publishing an annual depends on numerous people other than the annual stafft Our many thanks and appreciation go to the entire faculty and administration. To those people who went beyond the call of duty 0 special thanks to: Mr, Shaddix for his financial and moral support throughout the school yeah Mrst Joyce Kelley for her willingness to listen. Mrs, Brinkley and Mrs Davis for all the extra messages, and sometimes extra-typing. Mr. Stewart and Mrs, Stephens for picture identification and advice Lynn Rasor and Durwood Matthews for the days at Six Flags. Mrs. Darlene Files for chaperoning a Saturday night dancet Ms. Cecilia Black for helping with senior portraits. Mrs. Karen Bundy for having the misfo ne to have my editors Michelle ed and Bonnie Newton in her second period English class To the sponsors of the organizations. AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST 0 special thanks to Claudia Well who was always willing to watch my 6th period class, deliver pictures, or anything else that was needed. ast Look U10 MEYJQU 371W L X19104 W A BLKA Hf Q2 71-0 , J99 389 c o m ngng WA W710?
