Mr. John Egan Russell High School 1927 Immediately after the War Between the States, rapid growth occurred in the Atlanta area. Captain William Alexander Russell, a veteran of the Civil War, took advantage of this rapid industrial growth. He became a wealthy merchant. Captain Russell never married but took care of his widowed sister and her son, John J. Egan. Captain Russell died at the turn of the century, just as the City of East Point was becoming a large industrial area. East Point was the eastern terminal of the West Point and Central of Georgia Railroads. John Egan invested in industry in East Point and became even wealthier. East Point boasted a fertilizer factory, cotton mills, and other factories in an industrial area called Egan Park. At this time the City of East Point supported its own school system. The only high school was Central High, located near the present City Hall. College Park supported College Park High, a city school, and the Fulton County School System consisted only of Fulton High in Hapeville. Students from parts of College Park and Hapeville, as well as from East Point, Ben Hill, and Cascade Heights attended Central High. In 1923 the City of East Point decided to build a new high school. John Egan, who had no heirs, donated ten acres of his land near Egan Park for the construction of the school, with the stipulation that it be named for his uncle, William A. Russell. Egan died the next year and his wife added 6.5 acres to the donation. Construction of the school took place in 1923, and Central High was discontinued. The first regular session was held in 1924 with a student body of 300, a faculty of 10, and a graduation class of 7. Principals of Yesterday Mr. R.H. Bell 1927-28 Mr. C.W. Reid 1929-32 Mr. Paul D. In 1928 a JROTC unit was established at Russell High School, 12 years after the National Defense Act of 1916 was passed by the United States Congress. The JROTC program has been an important adjunct to the curriculum offered at Russell High School. The program has received the support of parents, teachers, and the respective administrations. The mayors and other officials of the communities concerned have not only attended ceremonies, but have periodically requested the services of the JROTC cadets for various public functions. The Russell High School JROTC has had a fine record of achievement. Students have gone to institutions of higher learning on military scholarships, earning degrees andyor commissions in the military services. This is a tribute not only to the JROTC instructors and cadets of the past, but to the Fulton County Board of Education and school principals, whose cooperation and support have made the program an Hinstitution within Russell High School. Color Guard 1934 Girls Rifle Team 1942 The Russell JROTC Color Guard was organized to carry the Colors tFlagsl for the JROTC Battalion at all JROTC and school functions during the school year. The Color Guard presents the colors at all PTA meetings and home football games. Each year the JROTC units in Fulton County holds competition between each color guard unit. In the past 5 years Russell has had an outstanding record in this competition. Their record follows: 1979e8econd Place 1980eFirst Place 1981-Second Place 1982-First Place 1983e8econd Place A Girls' Rifle Team was established in 1942. Members of the first team were Dorothy Blondheim, Shirley Morgan, Ruth Agnew, Anna Bergstrom, Doris Parketon, and Ruth Colley. SGT. Rathiewiez was the instructor. The team was discontinued after World War ll. It was not until 1975 that girls were able to participate actively in JROTC. Clubs Russell High School, as the oldest school in the Fulton County System, has been kind of a proving ground for clubs and organizations. Following are some of the unusual clubs to have been organized at Russell: 1927-The Girl Reserves Sextette 1929-Madelin Club 1933e-Girl's Rifle Club Commercial Club 1934-Aviation Club 1939e-Monday Personality Club Wednesday Personality Club Friday Personality Club 1942-Model Airplane Club 1943eNutrition Club Garden Club Russell Auxiliary Corps 1944-Special Duty Patrol 1945eHWe Serve Club Body Bquers Club 1950eBoys Quartette 1952e-The Bank 1953-Locker Patrol 1955-Thrift Club 1960-Radio Club Miss Russell High 1927 Sextette 1927 JROTC Band 1929 .1 use Marching Band 1952 Bands The present Wildcat Marching Band is the descendant of the JROTC Band. There are many other things Ms. Jenkins does for Russell. She helps with the organization of graudation ceremonies, and she helps with the preparations for guests at our school. She donates her time and effort to collect alu- minum to raise money for the teachers lounge. All in all, Ms. Jen- kins is an important part of Rus- sell. RUSSELL HIGH The main building of Russell High was con- structed in 1923, the Industrial arts building in 1936, gymnasium in 1955, music building in 1962, and the new classroom building was oc- cupied by Russell students in January, 1973. Plans have been made to build new Business Education and Science class rooms. The Busi- ness Education class rooms will be located just north of the new classroom building. The Scie ence classrooms will be on the second floor above the Business Education classrooms. Three additional classrooms will be located on the West side of the present library. Part of the old building will be torn down; however, the auditorium will not be torn down, and will be greatly improved. There is talk of the cafeteria part of the old building remaining as it is at the present time.
