The Spanish Club is an organiza- tion of two-year students who are in- terested in learning more about the language and customs of Spain. This year's club has had successful par- ties serving Spanish refreshments while singing Spanish songs. They are often out selling donoughts. The Anchor Club is sponsored by the Women's Piiot Club. DECA Distributive Education Co- operative Association. This organiza- tion is a youth leadership program with many challenging and exciting opportunities. Deca is for, and, is op- erated by students with marketing career goals. It gives students a chance to get personal recognition and contribute their valuable ser- vice. VOT is a cooperative work training program for Juniors and Seniors pre- paring for fulltime employment in busi- ness occupations. it is a program where knowledge, skills and techniques, learned separately, and brought to- gether and applied to an actual office job. The WILDCATS' ROAR is an after school organization for tenth, elev- enth and twelfth graders who are in- terested in writing, publishing and selling newspapers. In addition to the bi-quarterly newspaper, the staff publishes the LOVE BUG and the LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT. Each member must be exact in their reporting of the happenings at Russell. They learn to take on new responsibilities as individuals and work together as a cooperative group. The Hero Club consists of students enrolled in Occupational Home Eco- nomics. The members work at school and receive on the job train- ing. They work on individual and club related projects to become better members of their home, club, school and community. Student Council The Student Council is sponsored by Mary Lynn. Members are selected from each homeroom at the beginning of each year. These students are respon- sible for informing their homerooms of school events. Members are working all year to raise funds for different organi- zations and charities. At Christmas, they sponsored a dance, the profit of which went to the East Point Police Dept. for a children's charity. Other dances, car washes and fund raisers have benefited the Ameri- can Cancer Society, March of Dimes, the general school fund and, thankfully, the annual staff. MARK MAK E R8!!! Reginald Rutland. Reginald was named Z-93 prep player of the week, and was named one of the top 40 high school players in Georgia. He has played football for the last twelve years, basketball for six, and ran track for one year. Reginalds favorite sport is football, and when asked what makes him outstanding in this sport he said, HHardwork, dedication, and a love of the sportf' Reginald has signed a scholarship to play football with Georgia Tech next Fall. When asked about future goals he says, HI want to be the best student and athe- lete I can possibly be. Ryan Newton. Ryan was also chosen one of 2-93 prep players. He has played football for eight years, wrestled for three, and has ran track for five. This year he wres- tled twenty-one matches, lost none and was champion in his weight class. He has no favorite sport. Each sport he participates in is his favorite. When asked what makeshin so outstanding in each sport he said, HI don't look upon myself as doing my best!' Ryan has shown us his best time and time again. After high school Ryan plans to attend college and go into a prosperous field of work. Tony Jordan. Tony was chosen Z-93 prep player of the week during the 1982 football season. He has played football for about nine years. Football is his fa- vorite sport, but he is also an outstanding basketball player. He has played basketball for eight years. Tony also runs track. He says, l'It takes alot of natural talent along with the will to succeed in any sport, and this is what makes him an outstanding player. After high school Tony hopes to go to a four year college and play football. After long hours of practicing in the hot sun after school, of running countless blocks around school and in East Point, and of working on exercises, the individuals on each team did their jobs. Greg Walker led the boys team in wins. He has been a leader on a team that needed that strong leadership. The team practices diligently each afternoon in the spring. Video The video games that were invent- ed a few years ago experienced a sharp increase in production this year. Arcades and game rooms sprang up everywhere as playing be- came the 111 past time for all ages. Contests were held all over the US to determine the best player on Pac- man, Avenger, alaga and Donkey Kong. Home video versions were de- veloped as Atari and lntelivision were at war with eaeh other. The hand held versions were also popular. l l Sports HHow 'bout them Dawgs was the thing to say again in '82. Having an 11-1 season, the Dogs were handed their only defeat-in the Sugar Bowl from the Penn. St. Nittany Lions, led by Coach Joe Paterno and tailback Curt Warner. 27-23, the predicted score for UGA to win, was the final score that boasted Penn. St. to the National Championship. Herschel Walker did win the Heisman Trophy. Georgia Tech had their first win- ning season in many years as Coach Bill Curry led them to a 6-5 season. The Braves had an up and down season, winning 13 straight games at the beginning of the season and los- ing 13 straight at mid-season. They managed to regain some ground and became playoff bound. The St. Louis Cardinals won the best of 7 series in 4 straight games. Maybe next year! The Falcons had a hot-cold sea- son. For example, Atlanta slaugh- tered the Saints 35-0 and lost to the same team 3 weeks later 35-6. After 3 disappointing seasons, Leeman Bennet was fired. Music Rock n' Roll will remember the year 1982 as one of new wave, punk and generally an influx of loud music. Joe Piscopo, of Saturday Night Live fame, did a record of imitations of rock greats and even Frank Sinatra. in general, America is getting tired of being HHooked on Classics, Jazz, Country and looked in other areas. Marvin Gaye came out of re- tirement to put together ttMidnight Love featuring the hit single. Mi- chaei Jackson continued putting out number one hit singles. Bruce Springsteen is still going on strong with the new album 'tNebraska. Cars Everyone in the United States has either seen or ridden in a car. it might have been a klunker or a hot sports car, a Cadailac or a Volkswa- gon, but we take pride in what we drivethe latest sensation is the sleek Camaro and Firebird. Prices range from 12-15 thousand. Concerts There are many concerts in Atlanta; Atlanta being the major southern city on everyone's tour. The average person became a pi- rate or wore denim and ruffles. Foreign Well, this is what's happening in the world . . . This year the US. supported the sale of arms to Jordan. In Beruit, Marines trained 100 Lebanese soldiers for a special assault unit. Lech Waiensa, the president of the Polish Solidarity Union, was jailed. Anwar Sadat was as- sassinated. Pope Paul was shot, but survived. Britain won the war against the people in the Falklands. The arms race continued, trying to even out the ' balance of nuclear weapons between the U.S.S.R. and the U.S. The house passed a bill to limit auto imports. Bob Hope was invited to entertain the U.S. troops in war-torn Lebanon. The OPEC price wars and oil over-production glut- ted the market and made gas prices drop under $1.00. Breshnev passed away; Andropov was named as succes- sor. Governor THIS wasxthe year! The year for the election of a new governor. At the beginning, it appeared to be a run-away win for, candidate Bo Ginn, who flooded the public with polished advertisements and a catchy cam- paign song. Since Georgia has always been a democratic state all eyes turned to the democratic primary. In the first primary, Bob Bell was cho- sen as the republican candidate, and Joe Frank Harris, the common man's runner, and Bo Ginn were voted into a run-off. In the ensuing weeks Atlan- ta and the state was inundated with bumper stickers, yard signs, t.v. commercials and billboard all ex- claiming who should be the demo- cratic candidate. No matter where you looked you could not escape the smiling faces of the candidates. The tension mounted, although the newsmensaid Georgia was uncon- cerned, and as Jo Frank Harris made his acceptance speech, Bob Bell was busy beginning his campaign. THEY MADE A MARK Worldis Fair Reagan Ronald Reagan. the 40th Presi- dent of the United States, has just completed his second year in office. Reagan has held many prestigious occupations. Reagan has been a sail- or, cowboy, business man and even a gangster-eof course that was in the- movies. Ronnie was the star of the silverscreen. Democrats like to re- member his role with Bonzo, the chimp, and rtdicule him saying that he handles the Presidency like he handled Bonzo, badly. Reagan's next role was as the Gov- ernor of California. By supporting many innovative bills and iaws, Rea- gan won the adoration of many. Be- cause of applause he received in Caiie fornia, Reagan announced his intention to run for the Republican party's candidate for president. Since his election, he has kept his promise to deregutate the large cor- porations, utilities and oil compan- ies. At his age, Reagan should be looked upon as a wise member of so- ciety, but in two short years his pop- uiarity has slipped from 680A to 32170, in a recent poll. Americans are disap- pointed in Reagans cut backs of wel- fare benefits, social security, and his '7 inability to solve the unemployment problems that Americans are suffer- ing. Atlanta, GA This was an eventful year for Geor- gia: Joe Frank Harris was elected Governor by a landslide; the Univer- sity of Georgia's footbai! team went to the Sugar Bowl for the third time, but lost; the Braves had a great sea- son, winning 13 straight and making the playoffs; and the Falcons made it to the playoffs. While living in Atlanta you are close to many vacation spots in Georgia and in surrounding states. The res- taurants and nightlife that Atlanta has to offer are among the most di- verse and best in the U.S. Library To make our library more useful and welcoming, Russell is remodel- ing. The new addition to the library, located on the north side of the building, will have air conditioning, carpeting and new furniture to make it more comfortable. It will hold over 18,000 books plus house audio visual materials and equipment. Disappointing, that is-what many people thought of the World's Fair. it was designed to be an energy fair. While the exhibits were designed to be very imformative and education- al, people were going to see the ex- hibits to learn about the country, land and people's culture. After a long day of standing in lihes for exhib- its and food, many people ieft feeling tired and sweaty, but not happy or satisfied. The rides were fun, the food was o.k., but everything was OVER PRICEDI! To take an elevator ride to the top of the bail, looking out over the lake in front of the American exhibit, cost $5.00. One person asked for a baked potato with butter, bacon and cheese and paid $3.00. Expensive! Over-advertised? Yes. Aretha Yarbrough Mr. Tingle spent three years in the U.S. Marine Corps. Marine Corps. He was in combat in WWII. Mr. Tingle has been teaching for 34 years. He has held the position of Music Director at St. Petersburg High in St. Peters- burg, Florida for 1 year. He was a science teacher at Coffee County High, assistant principal at Seminole County High for one year and at Forsyth County Jr. High he was principal of math for one year. He spent thirty years as D.C.T. Coordinator in Fulton County. Mr. Tingle says, HMy great- est joy of teaching was to observe the learning process among our young people, and to know that I may have helped many students to become successful in life. Miss Martin has been teaching for twenty-five years. She taught at Russell and MD. Collins and then back to Russell. Miss Martin says, HTeachers are too lenient. Students depend too much on technology. She wants the students to keep studying and do the best you can. She wants you to keep up with the new technology because your future is the brightest ever. Miss Martin plans to travel a great deal after her retirement. Since Mr. Piziak has dedicated his life too teaching, he was too busy to speak with the annual staff. HYou learn by doing! You do nothing, you learn nothing! The more you do, the more you learn! Mr. Piziak has inspired many to do and learn. Dear Fellow Students, Putting together an annual is a very strenuous, but rewardingjob. I have enjoyed being a part of the Annual Staff for the past five years. This year the annual staff was young and inexperienced, but with the hard work and determination of all the members, we made it. Working after school and on Saturday mornings was well worth the results we see. I would like to thank Miss Eaton for all her hard work and wonderful ideas. She was an inspiration to all of us.
