Although it is evident that Russell High School students have strived for and reached the many goals that made the year of 1978-79 what it was, one is not too often reminded of the remarkable history of Russell itself. The beginnings of Russell High School are very signihcant as they started the many traditions, standards, and even buildings that reflect upon the happenings of the past school year. Russell was named after Confederate Army Captain William A. Russell, a wealthy proprietor of business in early East Point. As a result of the city's decision to build a new high school, construction on Russell was began in 1923. The first regular session was held in 1924 with a student body of three hundred, a faculty of ten, and a graduating class of seven. As the community around the area grew, Russell became the umother school for College Park High, Hapeville High, Southwest High, Headland High, Lakeshore High and Brairwood High. The school as well as the school system, has also expanded over the years. The school originally consisted of the front halll not including the library wing. The library at that time occupied what is now the teacher's lounge in the old building. The 1928 addition to the school included the auditorium, the side hall with the science labs, and the cafeteria. The old gym now used for storage was built about 1934 at a cost of $2,300. The library wing was added to the front hall about 1952. In 1955, the new gym and physical education classrooms were built. The music education building was completed in 1962. Construction on the new building was started in the early 70's and will be hnlshed in the near future.
