ALMA MAVER Ever memr' we shall cherish, Bravely, Bravely stands old Russell Holdythem saycred t00' Wavmg GOId and Wh'te' Let us sing our praises gladly, Emblems of True Sons and Daughters, O'er and Oler anew' Loyalty and Right! ' Chorus Russell, Russell, Dear old Russell, We shall ever be Proud to claim our Alma Mater, Russell, Hail to Thee! Foreward An annual is a book of memories. Its purpose is to keep faces from fading, events from expiring, and joys from being forgotten. An annual shows a whole year in just a few pages. There is so much that happens in a single year that is worth saving. Many experiences occur that may mean the world to you now as well as in the future. An annua! saves every tear and every smile; these are moments that should not be forgotten but rathered cherished and remembered. You will be able to return to the fond memories of yesterday. All of the ideas and experiences that weretshared during this year formed the content of this book; you, the students of Russell High School, made it, We only gathered, formed, and presented them to you! AT SINGLE POINT... William A. Russell High School is that point at which new, old, and different converge. The school offers the finest in traditional academic studies. Russell gives each student the opportunity to excel as far and as fast as he wishes in any held of study The school, with all of its tradition and history, is still providing the educational needs of today. Russell High School, the mother school of Fulton County, is leading the way in new and more creative methods of teaching because Russell's faculty realizes that if it must respond to a new and creative student. Although it is evident that Russell High School students have strived for and reached the many goals that made the year of 1978-79 what it was, one is not too often reminded of the remarkable history of Russell itself. The beginnings of Russell High School are very signihcant as they started the many traditions, standards, and even buildings that reflect upon the happenings of the past school year. Russell was named after Confederate Army Captain William A. Russell, a wealthy proprietor of business in early East Point. As a result of the city's decision to build a new high school, construction on Russell was began in 1923. The first regular session was held in 1924 with a student body of three hundred, a faculty of ten, and a graduating class of seven. As the community around the area grew, Russell became the umother school for College Park High, Hapeville High, Southwest High, Headland High, Lakeshore High and Brairwood High. The school as well as the school system, has also expanded over the years. The school originally consisted of the front halll not including the library wing. The library at that time occupied what is now the teacher's lounge in the old building. The 1928 addition to the school included the auditorium, the side hall with the science labs, and the cafeteria. The old gym now used for storage was built about 1934 at a cost of $2,300. The library wing was added to the front hall about 1952. In 1955, the new gym and physical education classrooms were built. The music education building was completed in 1962. Construction on the new building was started in the early 70's and will be hnlshed in the near future. DIFFERENT There are many events and happenings that people have during their high school years that can never be replaced and should always be cherished. There are many experiences which have helped students to learn more about themselves from the others around them. Many have cried and laughed; had good times as well as bad. All of these experiences have been shared with people who were at one time complete strangers, but who have come to be the dearest of friends in only a few short years. Because of these many experiences, students have been molded and formed to become the people they presently are; they have grown from young and immature children to young adults preparing to face the world with an open mind. g H hmmmw m f. S E C N. E a E D- x E All classes and organizations worked together to prepare for our Homecoming. The Student Council planned many activities to raise the spirit for the ttBig Day. The Senior Class made a clean sweep of the Spirit Week Activities. As an annual tradition the student council tries to sponsor the most festive and spirited Homecoming possible. All of this is a challenge in itself; but it is even more difhcult when nature and superstition are the competition! What could be worse than a rain storm on Friday the 13th? Despite what others may say, such forces never dampened the spirit of RHS's students, aiumni, faculty and friends. The parade was happy despite the many tears over the failure of the Junior class' Hoat to enter the parade. As the many rain clouds began to appear above the stadium on Homecoming night, people still had faith in the idea that everything would turn out to the best. It did rain indeed but that only made observers appreciate the spirit, efforts, and unity that went together to make the 1978-79 Homecoming the best ever. $College Park Westwood Palmetto Stockbridge Campbell Headland Briarwood Lovett Crestwood :zNorth Springs Wildcat History 78-79 On a hot July day, Head Coach Wayne Robinson set out with a relatively small and inexperienced group of athletes, seven returning iettermen, and formed them into our 1978-79 Wildcat Football Team. Aiding Coach Robinson in forming our team were Coach Rick Smith, line cordinator, Coach Lonnie Maddox-Ends and backs coordinator, and Coaches Ernie Creel and Kerry Hansard. The Cats quickly showed that they were ready to play football, when, in the season opener, they defeated College Park 20-6. They then defeated Westwood and Palmetto in succession before losing their first game to an oversized Stockbridge team 17-16. Most of the teams our Cats played were surprised by their speed and agility, and by concentrating on these strengths, the Cats were able to finish with a 5-5 season. Very rarely does an editor and his staff find such an assist. It is a great honor and privilege to acknowledge the many accomplishments of sqch an outstanding Senior Class. Over the years we have proven that through a combined effort many great goals can be achieved,- one such accomplishment has been the attainment of color Senior portraits. The total cooperation must exist between many annual staff members themselves, the students, faculty, alumni and members of the surrounding community. It takes many hours to complete the work that must be done; speed and efficiency must be maintained. Efforts of the staff members must be present in order to achieve satisfactory results. To meet the money needs of the annual stafT, there must be a great deal of practice in persuasive selling techniques. They sold ads, pictures, annuals, signatures, patrons, popcorn, and candy; not to mention the paper drive. As the annual stafic found that an effective theme was necessary. It chose to express the coming together of many different directions, ideas, and inhuences. The pointer is in a way a symbol of the indications of different directions, ideas and inHuences. In the completion of the 1979 Pointer, the staff itself found these directions and ideas very vital to reaching their goal, an improved yearbook for you, the students of RHS. SHOWN Traditionally, an annual is dedicated to a faculty or administrative member whose contributions to school life have exceeded mere expectations. Having been a part of Russell High School for many years, his inspiration, dedication, understanding, and his true sense of character and humor, have endeared him to the hearts of students, faculty, and administration. It is with great esteem that the 1979 POINTER dedicates its pages of one year's history of the students of Russell High School to you MR. HOLLIS GAMMON . w ,, . wa,4..4 W TO SEARCH mama ' mm? a M K, Q33 - nu mu :- a NEW KIND The idea of a continuation of a life- long search for a new kind of life is an old process that takes place in almost every High School in America. The extension of this search into Russell is unique in that the students, faculty, and events are different from those of other schools. At Russell, the student has a choice of what his interests and activities should be while in High School. A student can choose among four programs of study not to mention the many work programs or vocational school that is available. Whatever the choice may be, either a special skill or the development of one of the many facets of the broad human character, he will leave Russell better prepared to enter the complex world of a new and unknown life. SENIOR PROPHECY As time eiapsed to the year of nineteen hundred and ninety-nine, an assignment was given by Dr. Joyce Kelley to David Starr and Lori Giddens to hnd all possible cases of Russeliingus Waicatitis, evident only in Russell High School graduates of 1979. The symptoms of this dreaded disease were gold spots on the lungs, white spots on the heart with Wildcats printed on the roof of the mouth. It was our responSibility as coordinator of the American Medical Society to save this species of 79 from becoming extinct. We were to advise each member to seek professional help from Dr. W.T. Crews, HI world famous authority on such matters. We received a list of the class members from Mr. Wade, our Senior class sponsor, and began our search. The hrst person we were able to contact was Jeff Barron, Head of the Boy Scouts of America. He was able to direct us to Terry Tobertson and Leslie Smith, partners in Mustang Mechanics Corp.; LaWanda Davis, speed typist for John Silva's chain of restaurants; Belinda Scruggs, famous musician for the Spirit of Atlanta Drum and Bugle Corps, directed by Carla Young, whose hag corps captain was Sandy Carroli; and Gaye Culpepper and Debbie Patton, famous duet singers for a Baptist church ministered by Steve Pittard. From there we received the news of our new Miss America, Miss Valerie O'Neai. She led us to the whereabouts of James Kresyman, owner of Amusements Inc.; Joyce Worthington, president of Hair Inc.; and Tim Jacks, world renowned architect. Others that we contacted fromtthese reiiabie sources were Phyllis Barton, journalist for TODAYS WOMEN: Tonda Gabriel, librarian in the iibrary of Congress; Vickie Harris, reporter for the ATLANTA JOURNAL; Chris Maggi, private secretary for Dennis Dennard, an associate of Mark Lowery, a commerciai artist; and Peggy Sweatman, Senior Army Instructor of Fulton County schools Junior ROTC. We were previously informed of Brenda Phillips appointment as treasurer for the state of Georgia. We knew that she couid help us in our search for othermembers of our class. The people that she directed us to were: Tony Steiger, lead guitarist for a wet! known band; Karen Williams, supervisor of cashiers for Big Star Food Stores,- Jack Naborse, head of an employment agency; Karl Maddox, vice-president of a fast food corporation; Lamonica Thrash and Rose Morgan, conductors bf the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra; and Mike Thornhiil, former Heisman Trophy winner and present owner of the Dalias cowboys. Other famous athletes from our class were: Tim Smith, Eugene Upshaw's replacement on the Oakland Raiders; Terry Brown, captain and owner of his gwn professionai football team; Anthony Hamm, an award- winning fullback; Greg Graham, coach of the Atlanta Hawks; Biil Rhodes, president of the AFL; Darrell Pierce, halfback for the Denver Broncos; Johnny Jones, popular end for the Chicago Bears,- Elizabeth Cameron, founder of a new women's basketball team; Randy Portwood, ailestar pitcher for the New York Yankees. As Judy Evans typed thearticle that we submitted to the New York Times, she reaiized that she could be of some help to us. She referred us to Mike Moravetz, who recently received his degree in mortuary science, and his secretary Miss Dorothy Jones; Mike Taylor, collector of customized Camaros; Jana Newland, still twirling her way to fame; Chris Plunkett, a model for VOGUE magazine; Donna Milner, key- punch operator for the United States Government; Marcy Graham, president of A-l Business Machines and Kay Roquemore, champion figure skater for the United States. Next we were able to reach Stephanie Smith, Kim Wilson, Patti Saxton, Robin Williams and Dawn Rutledge working out in a nearby health spa. Through them we found out that Davida Pass still works at Krystal, Johnny Pittman is now a drill instructor, Jackie Powell is a fashion designer; Doreta Smith is now the director of Heart of Dixie Majorette Camps; Tony King, married with 10 kids and Anthony Sexton is a baseball All-Star. We went and talked to these people. None of the, when checked, had the disease. So we had to continue our search. The next day as we took time out of our search for lunch at a small cafe, we ran into Virginia Dutton, Mildred Wilson, Patricia Milam, and Lisa Adams. None of these people were effected with the disease but Mildred invited us to a party she was giving where we were able to locate Skip Dortch, Cindy Mikolaitis, Reeta Garrett, John Miller, Darlene McDonald, Heidi Little, Johnny Creel, Kenny Underwood, Charles Elliott, Robin Grifhn, and Nancy English. Luckily for them, they had not caught the disease either. As our search led us to the more rural area, we found Gerald McCloud, farming a plantation, and Ernie Underwood at a lake hshing. Neither of these men had been effected by the disease but Ernie was helpful in our locating Alan Allison, a famous wrestler. Alan quickly told us of the basketball playoffs to be held the next week. We attended and quickly found Eric Walker, the star guard. Also attending the game was Theresa Tucker; Kim Williams, with his wife Janice Smith; Frank Jones,- Crechell Nichels; Edward Cook and Amy Crapps. We informed these people about the disease and they assured us they would report to Dr. Crews as soon asthe game was over. Our search continued for a long while before we found Jana Mullings, the owner of HNana's Uniform Shops . She helped us think of the Olympic Games since we had some very good athletes in our class who hadn't turned pro. When we arrived at the sight of the Olympics, we quickly located Norris Wilkinson, the US. Tennis champion and Lisa Toole, the gold medal gymnist. They soon remembered that Dana Wright was the olympic surgeon. He referred us to Derrick Murray and Dexter Stokes, the two treasurers for the Olympics. The last few members of our class were located by us in the crowd at the games, except for Phyllis Steakley, who could not be located. Everyone was now aware of the disease and was checked by Dr. W.T. Crews, III. Luckily, we stopped the disease in time before it got out of hand! , Now our search has ended and we would like to thank everyone for his help and cooperation in helping us locate the Class of 79. Now we must report back to Dr. Joyce Kelley and tell her of our findings. We must record our information in case another case of Russellingus Wildcatits breaks; out. i Memories Memories are heartbeats Sounding through the years, Echoes never fading Of our smiles and tears. Moments that are captured, Sometimes unaware, Pictured in an album Or a lock of hair. Images that linger Deep within the mind, Bit of verse we cherished Once upon a time. Through the musty hallways Of the days we knew Ever comes the vision Beautiful and true. Memories are roses Blooming evermore, Full of fragrant sweetness Never known before. Life must have a meaning, Goals for which to strive. Memories are lights that burn To keep the heart alive. Grace E.
