' History of the Senior Class of 1946 In order to show the debt of gratitude this Senior Class of 1946 owes to its dearly loved Alma Mater, let us review the original graduating class of 1923 and the building blocks that this class and more recent classes have laid in foundation of our present institution. Built in 1922 on ten acres of land donated by Mr. John J. Egan, the building was named after his nephew, who died in the Battle of Lookout Mountain. Thus we acquired the front wing of the school and the name, William A Russell. The first student body had little that we have today-we have glee clubs, an Industrial Arts Building, a cafeteria, a gymnasium, an athletic stadium, and a graduating class of over two hundred. All this they did not have. The Arts Building was not added until 1935, seven years after the school as it now stands was completed. Their first graduating class consisted of 13 pupils. The graduating classes have in- creased in size through 1928, when the roll was 75, through 1932, when the roll was over 100, to the present day class, consisting of over 200. This was due, not solely to an increased population, or distance to other schools, or convenience, but due to the rising popularity and reputation of this Fulton County school. In our FRESHMAN year, 1942, our chemistry laboratory under the supervision of Miss Martha Gallo- way was furnished with many new supplies. Besides the natural result of more interest in chemistry, that year was also filled with numerous athletic programs, such as the entire student-participation physical aid pro- gram, the Victory Corps. In our SOPHOMORE year we were handicapped by the loss of teachers to the war; however, we were still able to hold our own with our studies plus organizing again and training a girYs military organization, the Russell Auxiliary Corps. Another big event of that year was a newly organized Boysa Glee Club under the di- rection of Mrs. Ruby White Brown. This new male group added great strength and volume to the graduation chorus. 'Our JUNIOR year reached an all-time high in our athletics. We won and well-deserved the coveted foot- ball trophy of the North Georgia Interscholastic Conference. This feat alone makes this year stand out Clearly in all our minds. This, our SENIOR year, has certainly been well-crowded with events. Besides the large amount of extra- curricular activities, in Military we have won the title of being an Honor School; our Senior play under the di- rectorship of Mrs. Virginia Parker has gone over with such success that this years performance has been one of the few in the history of Russell to be repeated; our library has increased substantially in number of books; our school paper, the Russell Wildcat, has published many more issues than the previous year; and our work shops have begun buzzing with activity with the return of many of our veterans. As the soul is to the man7 so the spirit is to the high school; and surely the spirit of this years Senior Class has been one of gratitude for the learning and enjoyment we have had here. -BOBBY POWELL ,46
