Foreword This Senior Class of 1946 will soon he scatteredethe half-eherished, half- hated school books will gather dust on the musty shelves of a forgotten attic. As well you know, many other lessons will he unheeded, many of the errors made again-ebut one thing cannot be passed by, one current of thoughts will remain in your mind. Yes3 the memories . . . memories of the fun, the silly pranks, the innumerable scold- ings, thegruelling nights before exams, the love and even the soul of Russell will re- main with you. It is this spirit of Russell that will guide you onward to some exalted goal. In the following pages we, the staff, have endeavored to bring before you the recollections of four years well spent at RUSSELL! Contents 1. Classes 2. Activities 3. Alhlelics Military 5. Features 00.... F. Advertisements Dedication SAMUEL MOSES HEARN To Mr. Hearn many attributes rightfully belong. He is a man whose wise counsel has guided us along the paths of rightful living, whose homespun humor has added greatly to that living and has made many moments bright and cheerful, moments that would otherwise have been dark and futile. For 38 years he has taught for the sheer joy of teaching: not merely to earn a livelihood. These years have been filled with inspiration and a challenge to all whom he has taught. Pos- sessing the enviable ability of teaching truths not found in books, he could, as the poet said, find qsermons in, stones and good in evemtthingf, His greatest joy was making friends and keeping in step and touch with the common man. As a token of esteem and gratitude, we, the staff, dedicate The Pointerw to our beloved teacher, Mr. Samuel Moses Hearn. In Memoriam PROF. J. R. CAMPBELL 1876 - 1945 Goethe once said, uA teacher who can arouse a feeling for one single good ac- tion, for one single good poem, accomplishes more than he who fills our memory with rows 0n rows of natural objects: classified with name and formf7 Surely it can be said that Mr. CampbelPS life was one of accomplishment and that his inHuence will live forever in the lives of those who knew him and loved him. Admin Each member of the graduating class is to be congralu- lated on finishing the course of study prescribed by ihe Fulton County Board Of Education. Four years ago this Class num- bered about three hundred and fifty and today numbers only about two hundred. You therefore have shown persistent ef- fort in being able to attain the goal which many others through HON JERE A. WELLS Superinlendenl indifference, carelessness, and laziness failed to accomplish. FULLER, Army CLASSES ' History of the Senior Class of 1946 In order to show the debt of gratitude this Senior Class of 1946 owes to its dearly loved Alma Mater, let us review the original graduating class of 1923 and the building blocks that this class and more recent classes have laid in foundation of our present institution. Built in 1922 on ten acres of land donated by Mr. John J. Egan, the building was named after his nephew, who died in the Battle of Lookout Mountain. Thus we acquired the front wing of the school and the name, William A Russell. The first student body had little that we have today-we have glee clubs, an Industrial Arts Building, a cafeteria, a gymnasium, an athletic stadium, and a graduating class of over two hundred. All this they did not have. The Arts Building was not added until 1935, seven years after the school as it now stands was completed. Their first graduating class consisted of 13 pupils. The graduating classes have in- creased in size through 1928, when the roll was 75, through 1932, when the roll was over 100, to the present day class, consisting of over 200. This was due, not solely to an increased population, or distance to other schools, or convenience, but due to the rising popularity and reputation of this Fulton County school. In our FRESHMAN year, 1942, our chemistry laboratory under the supervision of Miss Martha Gallo- way was furnished with many new supplies. Besides the natural result of more interest in chemistry, that year was also filled with numerous athletic programs, such as the entire student-participation physical aid pro- gram, the Victory Corps. In our SOPHOMORE year we were handicapped by the loss of teachers to the war; however, we were still able to hold our own with our studies plus organizing again and training a girYs military organization, the Russell Auxiliary Corps. Another big event of that year was a newly organized Boysa Glee Club under the di- rection of Mrs. Ruby White Brown. This new male group added great strength and volume to the graduation chorus. 'Our JUNIOR year reached an all-time high in our athletics. We won and well-deserved the coveted foot- ball trophy of the North Georgia Interscholastic Conference. This feat alone makes this year stand out Clearly in all our minds. This, our SENIOR year, has certainly been well-crowded with events. Besides the large amount of extra- curricular activities, in Military we have won the title of being an Honor School; our Senior play under the di- rectorship of Mrs. Virginia Parker has gone over with such success that this years performance has been one of the few in the history of Russell to be repeated; our library has increased substantially in number of books; our school paper, the Russell Wildcat, has published many more issues than the previous year; and our work shops have begun buzzing with activity with the return of many of our veterans. As the soul is to the man7 so the spirit is to the high school; and surely the spirit of this years Senior Class has been one of gratitude for the learning and enjoyment we have had here. -BOBBY POWELL ,46 President V ice-President THOMAS LIPHAM ADELAIDE OSBORN . This type of vocational work is made possible at Russell through the cooperation of some of our better business firms, the school, and the students enrolled. A very large per cent of the former pupils have successful employment records, either with the company they started out with or in a like position with some other business. We are looking forward to further successful years in providing this on the job training for interested students who meet the required qualifications. LLOYD PALMER .MAILE JARRETT GRADY MILLS JAMES ALLEN President Vice-President Secretary Treasurer Distributive Education The D. E. program is completing its third year at Russell with an enrollment of twenty-three. The student- employees have varied types of jobs related to selling, such as: Used cars, automobile accessories, paint, hardware, groceries, shoes, men,s wear, womens, acces- sories, and electrical supplies. Three are learning the ater management, three fount and drugstore operation, and one dairy management. These students will have practical experience to offer their employers when, after graduation, they are given full-time responsible work. The D. E. Club is affiliated with the State Distri- butors Club. Six members went to Savannah as dele- gates to the second annual convention. The local club has several social meetings each year, the most outstand- ing being the Employer-Employee banquet. In order to present the facts of Russell life to those not well acquainted with the school, tthis includes many students t?t we would like to show in black and white our black and blue experiences here. As we step out cautiously into the puddle of life, we must look back and think of our first iipuddlingii in learning. For you dear readers, a typical day that your bewildered sons and daughters have pulled through is here unfolded. BEFORE SCHOOL: Getting through the day is practically impossible without having a little bracer in the morning. Over at the much-frequented drug store we start the day right with a little snort of Coca-Cola or a swig of butterscotch soda. Just as your last nickle slides down the juke box and the heartbreaking strains of iiCement Mixerl7 gently fill the air, the inevitable happensethere goes the bell! Sorry, Gotta hurry. Say, Walk- er. save my hamburger. Iill he back after first period. HOME ROOM; Hark! A voice! IE5 the voice of Miss Parr. iiReynolds, did you throw that spit-balliw gtWhat spit-ball'ri uThe one that hit Lewis? tLNO, Miss Parr, I aimed at Moye. At this point a low mur- mur pervades the room, iiBob Barker, Bob Barker, Bob Barker? This is instantly drowned out by a celestial pipe, ttWe Shani: have any of this folly? Oops, the bell. Now club period, but first over to the drug store for that hamburger. tAs we seniors leave Russell for good, we would like to divulge our secret passageway to the drug store,l Blazing a trail down the front corridor, one sees 0n the l6ft hands raised in salute to the Confederate flag and mingled voices are heard shouting, iiHeil, Deanli, A little further on sits a lonely, yet contented, cou- ple crouched in the auditorium. iiAldine, I have bad news for you. iIFor me, Dot, my love?ii iiYes, I let Charles Walker read my palm and he said I was to marry a handsome man? As we pass the library door, a ter- rible shriek rends the air. iiPont Leach, get your feet off my desk and break in your shoes getting out of here.w With that we reach our destination, that of utmost secrecy . . . the boiler room! Now here is the place, this niche in the wall, This is our secret passageway. Uttering those words used by ALI BABA and the 575 Club, icOpen, sez mel,a the panel slips to one side and the original Underground Railroad, as Mr. Pirkle says, is re- vealed to us. One must hurriedly swipe his sandwich and rush to club period. After getting marked present on the rolls of the first 3 clubs, he might settle down in the Science Club and listen to Miss Galloway give a lecture on metals. Holding a half dollar in her hand she slaps it on her desk and asks, 4gWhat is it?,7 The small voice of George Ham from the rear of the room spurts, 6iTailsiii But there is the bell and on to first period. FIRST PERIOD: Geometry. After humping the gums for a coupla minutes Mr. Maddox arises and asks, iiWhat is a straight angleiw No answer. iiSpeak out, Son, youire among friends. iiI believe you are in a quan- dary. Dorsey, spell straight? itS-T-R-A-I-C-I-I-Tfi iiRight, Dorsey, now what does it mean?5 iiWithout ginger ale? The door opens and in walks the orderly, who by persuasion of a piece of Juicy Fruit the period before, promptly says Martha Joyce is wanted in the armory. Leaving the Class and wandering toward the boiler room, she passes Miss Michael who can be overhead saying, iiJo Ann, tell how many wars we have had?7 iiSevenfi iiThatis right. Enumerate them? iil, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 77 Ambling on down the hall a couple of seniors are heard talking in the balcony of the auditorium. The conversation follows: iiBetty, how do you know Mr. Lockliear likes you?i, iiWeIl, Tom,, everytime I get a test paper back, heis put a great big kiss all over it. tClang, clangi Ye gads, not the bell already! Aaaaaagh, here they come, I canit escape! Theyill crawl all over me! tIn the event you do not follow this, those dear little gremlins, the Freshmen are headed down the hall. If one of those dears were to bend over to tie his shoe, unseen, he would be trampled to deathJ Narrowly escaping this ordeal, you mistakenly enter your next class. SECOND PERIOD: Ah, English, my Bete Noircf What hol! Mrs. Parker speaks, iiTurn around and shut up, Bright eyes? tTo the uninitiated she is speaking to Lamar Cochranj iiNow we shall have the oral test I as- signed last month. Youive had plenty of time? A hush overclouds the room. i4Now, Linton, paraphrase this statement, iHe was bent on seeing her . iiThe sight of her doubled him up? Luckily, the gong of the bell sounds in time for the rest of the class to escape. THIRD PERIOD: This is the period when many students have a reservation in the clinic for their beauty sleep. There, above the humdrum of the crowds, various friends are discussing college. LiWhat is iCollege bredi, Dixie?7, hi donit know, Mildred, but Mrs. Fitz says its a four year loaf? FOURTH PERIOD: Since we donit understand this period, to attempt an explanation is seemingly impossi- ble. But for the curious this statement will suffice: Eeeeeeeeeee LUNCH: Aha, the welcome stench of food from the cafeteria fills our nostrils and we hurry down to eat. FIFTH PERIOD: It is time to lay out of study hail! tNeed we say more?i SIXTH PERIOD: So on to Espanol! As our typical pupil enters, Miss Gross asks, iin. habla espanolfw iiI believe its the first door on your right down the hall? Though not under his own power, he leaves her class. Hark, the bell! SEVENTH PERIOD: And so to dentention hall! Though I graduate this year, Imust keep returning for three more years to finish out my term in the afternoon class. Ah, 6:30, time to leave. C- For the third time in four years we had the high-seorer for the season. Jack Ramage, with 148 N. G. I. C. points and at least 100 outside the conference was high point man. Harry Bailey was among the ten high scorers. All other players acquitted themselves well on offense and defense. Almost all of the boys graduate this year, but we are look- ing forward to having others to carry on in the same fine way as those who are leaving. Squad Coach Gunn Wilson, Captain Brown, A lternate C aptain Herron Morris Prickett Squire Erwin James Carter According to the score of the Russell Girlsh basketball team the season does not seem very suc- cessful. But all girls showed a very excellent spirit and our pros- pects for next year seem very good. A11 in all, they had a fine season, and in the final sense, success is not measured in games won or lost, but how you played the games. The retirement of Colonel George 5. Clarke as P.M.S.81T. was keenly felt, but with his successor Lt. Colonel Albert N. Ward, who distinguished himself in the E.
