S. 8: T. of Allanm Area CAPT. BERNARD B. FULLER Assistant P. M. S. 86 T. Fulton County High Schools COLONEL GEORGE SHEPPARD CLARKE, Present P. M. S. 86 T. of Junior R. 0. T. C. for Atlanta Area is Hero of Two Wars Colonel George Sheppard Clarke, P. N. S. 81 T. of the Junior R. O. T. C. Units of the Atlanta Area, which includes Russell High, is credited with gallant service on many hattfe fronts. Dur- ing World War 1 he was in the thick of things and prior to and since has seen service in China, the Phillipines, Hawaii, Australia, Japan, several European countries, and other far-Hung scenes of action. Before coming on duty with the R. O. T. C. in the Atlanta Area in October of 1942, Colonel Clarke distinguished himself as leader of the iiFighting Fifty-Seventh on Bataan and Corregitlor, when his regiment fought a delaying action that saved the population and Fighting forces of those islands from sudden annihilation at the hands of the hordes of diabolical Japs sweeping in from the north. Five minutes before the capitulation of Bataan Colonel Clarke was evacuated at the order of General Wainright with instruc- tions to proceed to Cebu to take command there because of his knowledge of Visayan, the language of Cebu. The submarine carrying Colonel Clarke emerged in the harbor of Cebu as a large Japanese Heel landed to attack. The sub, instead of landing was ordered to Australia. Colonel Clarke was one of two Combat officers to escape. Since arriving in Atlanta Colonel Clarke has been greatly in demand as a speaker. His straight forward manner of expression and his wealth of experience have made him a popular personality in his many appearances before Civic, fraternal, social and religious organizations. As an insight into the character of the man Colonel Carlos P. Romulo, who was ordered to leave Bataan at the same time as Colonel Clarke, by whatever means could be devised, said that Colonel Clarke went to General Wainright and explained that a ihlood-price. was on the head of Colonel Romulo and asked that he be permitted to take his place on the submarine and that he find other means of escape. General Wainrigth reply was, iiGentlemen, you have your Orders? How fortunate for the youth of Atlanta and Russell High to have the benefit of the guidance of a man so unselfish, so pro- foundly in earnest about life and so willing to share with others that which he holds closest and dearest. Every inch a hero, 3 real soldier, and a gentleman! SERGEANT WARD Sergeant Instructor Russell High School R. O. T. C. AT RUSSELL As school draws to a close every student is proud of the record set by the R. O. T. C. this year. Although there have been a few setbacks, the majority realized the importance of obtaining military experience and took advantage whenever oppor- tunity afforded a chance for progress. The upperclassmen, in order to reach the high standards made by military units, prior to this year, had to resort to their deepest knowledge of military skill. In the classroom, as well as out of doors, their ingenuity was superbly dis- played as they excelled in their eHorts to procure information concerning subjects put before them. The novice freshmem being ctgreen and ragged? were at first slow to adapt themselves to military procedure: but after a short time exhibited a remarkable quality of comprehension. Next year they will undertake the task of forming another 4ccrack outfitti: which, as before, will strive to bring honor and pride to all Russell. The military units of the future will have an arduous feat to perform when they attempt to gain such recognition as did the military department of t1943-19L14t. The R. A. C35, sponsored by the R. O. T. C. Department, although formed oniy a year ago, have their own leaders and are able to train the girls as proficientiy as required. Therefore, they are independent of the boys military department. They have parti3ipated in numerous parades and ceremonies, and have made a splendid show- ing in both their daily work as well as, when in ceremonial formation. Altogether Russell's military department holds the distinction of having the most colorful record in its history. The spirit, cooperation, and determination was brought out as these traits tend to cement us into a more powerful and practical people whether at war or peace. HARRY TE CRIS - 11-1.
