First, we look back up- on the four years of study and preparation during which time we have delv- ed into the rich mines of wisdom and thought, collecting capital which through our lives Will he used for investment. The hard red clay of Decatur saw the Woldeats go down to their ancient rivals, 14 t0 0. For eight Russell gridmen it was the last game of their high school careers. This game was the climax of a fair season. The Wildcats, under the tu- torage of Coach R. L. Bowen and the guidance of Captain Perry Johnson, 311 N. G. 1. C. guard, won five and lost five of their ten-game season, piling up 1 14 points to their opponents 110. Opening the season with the strong G. M. A. Cadets, the lighter Wildcats, outweighed twenty pounds to the man, dropped the Opener, 22 t0 6. The next three foes fell before the onslaught of the Wildcats; Cartersville 27 t0 6; R. E. Lee 13 t0 0; and Griffin 26 t0 6. ; Spalding then descended upon RusseH, and floundered through the mud to a 13 t0 7 victory. This was one of the bitterest defeats 0f the season. Tech High next met Russell under the lights at Ponce de Leon, and defeat- ed the desperately fighting Wildcats 37 t0 7. The second tornado 0f the year descended upon Gainesville when Russell journeyed to the mountains and snarled their way to a 33 t0 0 landslide. Marist was next in line, and bowed to the Wildcats, 19 t0 0. Then came the deciding point of the season, as Commercial met Russe11 0n the Russell held. The N. G. I. C. championship depended on this game. Neither Commercial nor Decatur had been beaten7 while Russell had lost one N. G. I. C. game, to Spalding. But Commercial and Decatur had battled to a tie, 0 t0 0. Therefore, Russelljs 0n1y Chance of winning?r the champion- ship was to defeat both Commercial and Decatur. 1 Early in the second quarter the Wildcats pushed over a lone touchdown. Desperately holding this lead until the last quarter, the frantic Wildcats saw their championship hopes slip thru their fingers as the Red Raiders of Com- mercial scored twice to win, 12 t0 6. Page 80 P O i NT E R41 x tRu w ., t W 1 114m 1.11.49 BOYS' BASKETBALL HISTORY Although greatly hindered by the loss of nine regulars including the start- ing five, the Russell basketball team, led by Captain Glenn ttspikeTT Kirk- land, came out on top with a record of twelve Victories and seven defeats. The inexperienced team met the difficult Fayetteville, Jonesboro, and Decatur teams, with that undauntable Russell spirit which carried them through to successive Victories by the scores of 29-10; 31-16 and 34-31 respectfully. Since all good things must come to an end, Russe117s spectacular begin- ning was abruptly halted by the loss of a game to Spalding by the score of 21-15; followed by a loss to GriHin, 2'2-18. Russell then journeyed to Marietta and defeated a scrappy quintet by the turn of 33-26. But the TTWildcats3 were again defeated by Griffin, 21-18. The uWildeats,7 avenged an earlier defeat by setting back the Spalding team 43-42. Russell then defeated Fayetteville 28-14. North Fulton proved to be a Jonah and eked out a 24-23 victory over 1 the five Russell Musketeers. Russell then conquered Jonesboro, 33-26. 1 In a spectacular game the Russellites defeated their arch rivals Fu1t0n 24-17 in an upset. When the Coats, invaded the lair 0f the Decaturites they were repulsed 28-17. The 3B7, team ran rough-shod against the Richardson Rams, 37-5. The team then lost two straight, one to North Fulton, 23-14 and another to Fulton 29-25. In the last three games Russell triumphed. The Victories were over Ma- rietta, 37-20 and Druid Hills was defeated twice, 24-23; and 27-23. In the N. G. I. C. tourney Russell lost to Commercial in the quarter finals. Page 82 Page 83 GIRLS' BASKETBALL HISTORY The Russell Female Basketeers ended a very successful season with four- teen victories and four set-hacks. The girls, winnings came in streaks. They defeated Fayetteville, Jonesboro, Decatur, and Spalding in order before falling before Griffin. They then defeated Marietta before being defeated by Griffin again. The Lassies then turned back Spalding, Fayettevi11e, North Fu1t0n, Jonesboro, and Richardson only to suffer defeat at the hands of Decatur. Marietta was their next Victory, then they defeated North Fulton, then lost to Druid Hills, and conquered Druid Hills to end the season. Page 84 Page 85 TRACK TEAMEHISTORY With an enthusiastic squad of thirty reporting, Coach C. V. Maddox Start- ed track practice with an eye on winning further cups and medals for Rus- sell. Already considered a strong contender in the local track circuits, the Wildcats hoped to uphold that reputation. A trial meet with G. M. A. however, resulted in downfall for the inex- perienced and rusty Russellites. 0f the thirty reporting, approximately twenty were new men. The squad was sorely hurt by the former yearas graduation, losing three 01: the mainstays 0f the team, Erman Brown, 220 and 440 star; David Baze- more, mile and half mile; and James Stewart, brilliant quarter mile runner, left the team by way of graduation. Several new corners and some among the 01d squad were groomed to up- hold the honor of the team. Among these were Jack Boatwright, Jack Davis, James Preston, and Roy Cash. Several meets were scheduled, as well as entering the best of the squad in the Baylor Relays, held in Chattanooga. Among these was a field day held at Russell, in which Russell, Marietta, Canton and North Fulton were entries. Although the squad was weaker and slower than the former year,s crack team, Coach Maddox hopes to develop those returning into a strong, fast team. The team is trying to schedule matches with Boyst High, Tech High, and other high schools. A match was held at Black Rock Country Club to determine the best foursome in the school. A fine showing is expected of the team. t t GOLF TEAM HISTORY Page 87 TENNIS TEAM HISTORY The Tennis Club, under the joint direction of Miss Frances Starr and Miss Elizabeth Cowart, was organized as a regular addition to the group of Rus- sell High clubs. Due to so many tennis enthusiasts, two separate divisions were made, each one containing a membership of around forty. Matches with other schools were scheduled for spring dates. Tournaments were also played among members of the clubs. One of the most promin- ent of the rival matches was the series with North Fulton. Cortez Suttles, Champion of Russell last year, leads Miss Starras group, while Lester Soshy is president of Miss Cowartts group. --BILL RICHARDSON.
