Page 33 Crossroads of Life When we shall come to the end of life,s way, When we shall look back to a sunnier day, We shall remember, with sorrow and grief, Those things we missed doing for our neighborls relief. Weill remember those days, when with gladness and joy, We played and gloried as a high school boy. Weill remember that time, when in all happiness, We left behind us those days of sheer bliss. Weill recall how our friends, toward east and toward west, Each took his way for making his best; How when all our paths and hopes looked bright We started to conquer this old world overnight. But now, with our lives that are fast Hitting by, We remember that we climbed not quite so high As' to make our name a name of renown About which the praise of the universe is wound. iiOhW we will say with a pang of regret, l4We didnlt quite reach what we started to get, But our life in this world has been one sweet rest With nothing to bother, except to he blestf, But classmates, aspire to goals of great worth. Do all in your power to help this old earth. Your life will be richer and you shall receive A greater reward than youill ever believe. eGENE HOWELL ,36. .; ,m..-.-..-;p. -..-.w,h..waa.r;wasLaJi::u .4; W 3:; wanton. W l i , 2 t C A T HISTORY For four years, we, the Senior Class of 1936, have lingered in the Hall of Learning. Now we are about to depart into the world, leaving behind pleasant memories of by-gone days. We wish to leave to future senior classes the memory of delightful experiences and a goal to strive for : Success. In our freshman days, which a large number experienced at the school in which they finished the first course of their life, we had no reason to be shy among 01d acquaintances. QuiCkly learn- ing our duties, we proceeded as other high school freshmen. The sophomore year, the first at Russell High for a number of us, was attended by better acquaintance with our teachers and duties. Hence, was formed a better idea of high school. Entering into the junior class, we considered ourselves very close to the goal: Graduation. After learning that we had a long road to travel yet, we settled down to live up to our name. This year we saw a good record in athletics, the Junior Class being well represented. The TiWildcatfi a junior project, won a loving cup in keen competition with numerous other high school papers at Athens, Georgia. To crown this memorable year, ten juniors were initiated into the local chapter of the National Honor Society. At the annual Federal inspection of the R. O. T. C. unit, Russell won the title of Honor School with the junior unit aiding. The last year, for we are now'full Hedged seniors, a number of other seniors were inducted into the Honor Society. Although we did not surpass in athletics, the year was considered very good. With a last word of sympathy and farewell to the next junior class, and a wish of the best of success in making Russell High 3 school of honor, we, the Senior Class of 1936, bid you iTAuf widersehenf, GEN E HOWELL T36, Historian. Page 35 V t? w 4 Wm :11. f PROPHECY A trip as a stow-a-way is exciting enough on something as ordinary as an airplane, so you can imagine what the life of stow-a-ways on an expedition into the stratosphere would be! We werenit even noticed, we were going up so fast. When we stopped at Mars to take on some petrol, we slipped out and went on an expedition all of our own. We had heard of a famous hall of mirrors, in which one could see anything that would ever happen if you concentrated hard enough! Leland was outstanding in scholarship, having made the honor roll every quarter since entering Russell High. He was a member of the Russell Band and Orchestra and had an orchestra of his own known as ;iTlie Southern Syncapators? Leland has gone from this material world to a world that knows no sor- row, suffering, trial, or tribulation. His memory will ever linger in the hearts of his classmates who knew and admired him so much. Page 61 President . Vice President . . Secretary . . Treasurer . . . Striving now as we may with our pledge to comply, Let us work with our eyes on the goal. May our loved Alma Matefs Society grow, And no honors excel Russell H igh. Page 62 HISTORY OF HONOR SOCIETY At a meeting of Secondary School Principals, Atlantic City, New Jersey, 1921, the report of a committee on the constitution and organization of a National Honor Society was adopted. Since 1900 honor societies had sprung up throughout the country and had been of benefit locally. Now, as their efforts were to he unified, and their development to become national in scope, the organization was called the National Honor Society. The principal object was to recognize and encourage scholarship, but in order to develop weII-rounded personalities and to meet the needs of the numerous societies, it was agreed that Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Character he the four cardinal principles of the Society. The fact that 1653 chapters, an average of more than one hundred per year have been organized in the United States in the senior high schools, nine in the Philippine Islands, four in Hawaiian Islands, two in Porto Rico and one in the American School in Shanghai, China, indicates that this organization has proved its value. The Russell High Chapter was granted a charter in December, 1934. Five groups of stu- dents have been inducted with appropriate ceremonies in the presence of their fellow students. These were selected by the Honor Council of the faculty from the upper 15 per cent of the Senior Class. The National Honor Society has an emblem, known as the Keystone Key, but the matter 01 colors, flower, and slogan is left with each Chapter. The Russell High Chapter has chosen for its colors, green and gold; its flower, the jonquil; and its slogan, 11To be rather than to ,, seem. The students of Russell High School have recognized the high aims of the Honor Society and have cooperated in its attempts to make Scholarship, Leadership, Service. and Character the keyword of every student in this school. The number 0f students on the honor roll has almost doubled since the installation of this society, and they have shown greater interest in leadership, and service not only in school but in the community and church as well. In all these activities they have been developing unconsciously perhaps7 the principle that is inseparable from the other threeecharacter. Page 63 Editor-in-Chief . Assistant Editor . Bowen, the Wildcats finished a very successful season with six Victories and two defeats. The team scored 106 points to their opponents 96. The Wildcats tasted their first blood of the year when they defeated Robert E. Lee, 13-0. The team showed a great amount of speed as well as power. The weather being good they had little trouble with the cadets. Griffin journeyed all the way to East Point just to get defeated t0 the tune of 19 to 14. Clay was outstanding in his passing and generalship. He threw a pass to Rush for the first score and to Cook for the last. November was a sad day for the Wildcats who met defeat in a night game at Ponce de Leon Park with the Tech High i6Smithies.,, The Russellites tried hard but were playing against a team much heavier and faster. The score was: iTSmithiesi, 33, Wildcats 0. Burning with the desire to make up for the defeat, the Wildcats met their old jinx, Decatur High. For the first time in seven years Russell defeated them. The whole of the Russell team played with the pent up rage of all the other teams that had ever been defeated by Decatur. Mr. McGee jumped up and cracked his hee1s for joy. This was the most thrilling and important game of the season. A ttcockyi, Russell team went out to meet the Commercial i6Typists,i at Ponce de Leon in the second night game of the season and met with heavy defeat. Although they tried hard they lost 20-0. A week of hard practice ended with a Victory over the 01d rival, Fulton. The score was Russell 31, Fulton 0. After another week of practice, the Wildcats journeyed to Gainesville to meet the Elephants. There they were beaten 15 to 12 but the Elephants made the fatal mistake of playing an ineligible man and the game was for- feited to Russell, 1 to 0. On Thanksgiving Day the Wildcats played their last game of the season with Marietta. Although the game was played in eight inches of red mud and two inches of water, the Russeilites came out Victorious. The score was Russell 12, Marietta 6. This game ended the second-best season ever had by the Wildcats. The prospects for next yearas team is great as several letter men will re- turn. Those who will be lost by graduation are Harrison, Conley, Clay, Bill and Frank Cook, Slaten, Harmon, Kadel, Stewart, McElhannon and Posey. BILL COOK 536. Page 82 Page 83 BOYS, BASKETBALL HISTORY Coach Lewis, basketeers tried exceptionaHy hard this season but lost the North Georgia Interscholastic Conference championship which they won last year. The team was made up of good p1ayers but the bad weather that we all remember caused so much illness that it was impossible to get a champion ship team. The team fought bravely under unbeatable odds as will be shown in the following chart of the pre-tournament games. When fall basketball practice was begun there was well over a hundred girls present and it was quite a while until Coach J. G. Lewis had selected a squad. Those selected for the squad were: Isabelle Jerguson, captain: Mary Jerguson, alternate captain; Dorothy Ann Wright, Madge Longino, Ophelia Hagood, Kate Duncan, Mary Ellen Carter7 Elizabeth Reeves, Laura McCarty, Marguerite Moody, Anita Hall, Elizabeth Morris, Mildred Brown, and in Cecil Johns they had a very capable manager. The team played games with Jonesboro, Spaulding County High, Mari- etta, North Fulton, Campbell, Druid Hills, and Griffm High Schools. In summing up the results of the season7 the team won six games7 lost eight, and tied one. Although the girls did not participate in the North Georgia Inter- scholastic Conference tournament they played a game with North Fulton the night of the fmals. As only four of the players graduate this year, next yearhs team should be a very strong one and, is expected to have a very good season. MARY ELLEN CARTER, 36. The Russell team won the third place in the Baylor Relays for the first time in the history of the school. The Wildcats next had a three-way meet With North Fulton and Avon- dale. It was an easy victory for Russell. Russell is expected to enter the regular North Georgia Interscholastic Con- ference meet and will have an excellent chance of Winning the coveted loving cup.
