The POINT lflll., 1934- zrnnnzuzrmnrmrnmzxnnulgm EDICATICN Although in every successful institution of learn- ing the most important phase must be scholarship, there are certain extra-curricula activities which are vital to the life and spirit of a school. There is no more impor- tant activity outside of scholarship than athletics. Ath- letics play an important part in keeping the school a unit and in building the individual characters of the students. Although Russell High is yet a young school, the record which has been made in athletics is one for which every Russellite should be proud. This record would not have been possible if it were not for the excellent coaching staff which it has been this school's good fortune to have. The coaches of Rus- sell High are capable, earnest, and self-sacrificing. Al- though, they play to win the game, their main efforts have been directed toward the building of character and good sportsmanship. The student body of Russell High, as well as the boys on the teams, have great confidence and pride in their coaches and believe that this mention should be made of their merits. Therefore, we the members of the staff, respectful- ly dedicate the nineteen-thirty-four volume of The Pointer to the athletic coaches: Mr. Robert L. Bowen, football, Mr. Cyrus V. Maddox, baseball and track, Mr. john G. Lewis, basketball and tennis, and Miss Mar- guerite Dobbs, secretary of the Athletic Department. The POINTER, 19341 ' FCDREWCRD When life's problems are to be met and the future seems uncertain, it is often profit- able and always enjoyable to turn back the leaves of time and review the days gone by. It is with this thought that the members of the annual staff, submit this ninth volume of THE POINTER to the students of Russell High School. May it become a part of their future lives and, may it preserve forever the mem- ories and friendships of the days spent in Russell. in xx N V mg i i i' ' 'Y al' r i is
