The POINT lflll., 1934- zrnnnzuzrmnrmrnmzxnnulgm EDICATICN Although in every successful institution of learn- ing the most important phase must be scholarship, there are certain extra-curricula activities which are vital to the life and spirit of a school. There is no more impor- tant activity outside of scholarship than athletics. Ath- letics play an important part in keeping the school a unit and in building the individual characters of the students. Although Russell High is yet a young school, the record which has been made in athletics is one for which every Russellite should be proud. This record would not have been possible if it were not for the excellent coaching staff which it has been this school's good fortune to have. The coaches of Rus- sell High are capable, earnest, and self-sacrificing. Al- though, they play to win the game, their main efforts have been directed toward the building of character and good sportsmanship. The student body of Russell High, as well as the boys on the teams, have great confidence and pride in their coaches and believe that this mention should be made of their merits. Therefore, we the members of the staff, respectful- ly dedicate the nineteen-thirty-four volume of The Pointer to the athletic coaches: Mr. Robert L. Bowen, football, Mr. Cyrus V. Maddox, baseball and track, Mr. john G. Lewis, basketball and tennis, and Miss Mar- guerite Dobbs, secretary of the Athletic Department. The ...... l SENIOR HISTORY To know the man of any age, we must search history, for history records its deeds and itd progress. When we read a history of the earliest men in Europe, we learn that they were rough savages, living in caves and woods, fighting tooth and nail with their stomachs in savage feasting, upon some slain beast. But, ignorant and fierce as these shaggy men were, they per- formed deeds, they did not stand still. It has been so with every age and people, even to this time. This holds true of the graduating class of 1934, and to understand all their deeds and progress we must read their history. ln September, 1930, We entered MDear Old Russellw as freshmen, but like the cave men of long ago, we were not content to stand still. As fresh- men We felt quite small and hardly knew what to do with ourselves. After getting acquainted with the teachers and upper classmen, we began to feel our importance. Of course, everyone feels his importance in being able to go to Russell High School. Sophs! and how grand to watch the udumb little freshiesw getting last in the long corridors and spacious rooms. 'LHOW could any freshman be so ignorant and green?,' we asked. No longer were We the butt of every joke and the source of all fun. And to our heart's dseire We took our re- venge on the first yeariclass. Then came our junior year. This year the U. D. C. Medal was won by a junior, Elsie Blackstone. Many other honors, too numerous to mention, were taken by juniors. The entertaining of the seniors, by the juniors, was another important item which was enjoyed by. all members of the class. Now, as a reward for our efforts, we have gained admission to our present class-the senior. This year is dearer to us than all the rest, as We begin to realize that our high school days will soon be over. At times we have been discouraged and downhearted, but all this discouragement is gone, and we are looking to the future for all contentment. The graduating class of 334 wish to express our sincerest appreciation to our principal, to the faculty, and to the Board of Education, for all their helpfulness and kindness in these four years. By their untiring efforts we at last gained our ahigh-school educationf, And thus, the history of the class draws to a close. May the Senior Classjof ,35 hold the name of HRussell high above all other schools, as the previous classes have done. JURELLE SIGMAN ,34. The POINTER, 1934- FOOTBALL HISTORY The 1933 Wildcat football season could hardly be called a great success. With only three regulars back from last yearis team, Coach R. L. Bowen was confronted with the task of rebuilding an entire new team, Despite this great handicap the Wildcats, under the leadership of Captain Archie Sims, put forth a fighting team on the field that captured five out of ten games and played to one scoreless tie. With several weeks' hard practice behind them, the Wildcats were lined up against Commer- cial High in the first game of the season. Despite determined resistance by the light Typist eleven, the Russell lads came out victoriousAl3 to 6. ln the next game Russell played a highly keyed Marist eleven to a 0 to 0 standstill at Ponce de Leon Park. The Wildcats were the aggressors throughout the game, but could not push over a score on the stout Cadet defense. The Wildcats met Griffin on the home field in the third game of the season. The Spalding County boys were out to avenge last year's defeat at the hands of the Wildcats, They accomplished this by scoring early and settling down to a defensive game. The final score was 12 to 0. ln the fourth game Russell met unexpected resistance by a light but sturdy Newnan eleven and barely managed to eke out a 6 to 0 victory. The Wildcats' next opponent was Decatur. With two injured regulars on the sidelines, the Wildcats played on even terms with the Decatur lads until late in the second period. Here the DeKalbe1 s superior power asserted itself and the Wildcats were crushed to the tune of 32 to 0. In the sixth game the Wildcats, not fully recovered from their defeat at the hands of Decatur, narrowly escaped a loss at the hands of North Fulton. A blocked punt and a pass for the extra point gave the game to Russell by the score of 7 to 6. The following Friday Gainesville, fresh from a one-point victory over the championship De- catur team, beat the Wildcats 13 to 0. The next game resulted in another defeat for the Wildcats. This time at the hands of LaGrange. The Wildcats played an excellent game but a long run for a touchdown on the last play of the game gave LaGrange the game 14- to 7. Fulton was Russell's next opponent. This was the last home game of the season and before a record crowd the Wildcats defeated their old rivals 18 to 0. The Wildcats reached their peak in the final against Marietta. Practically every play clicked and the Wildcats came out victorious, 24 to 6. Prospects for a good team next year are excellent. Practically all of this year's team will return. Those lost by graduation are J. R. Murphy in the line and Captain Archie Sims and Ralph Giles in the backfield. F. A. SMITH, '34. A. teams for the first time, the Wildcat track team is facing a very diflicult season. Due to a new rule in the fifth district all schools of seven hun- dred and fifty pupils or more are ineligible to compete in the athletic events in the district. This being the case, Russell had to compete with such teams as Tech High, Boys High, G. M. A., and Lanier. Against these teams the Wildcats will have little chance for first honors, but as for their superb sportsmanship and fine competitive spirit they will no doubt come through with flying colors. Coach Maddox expects to enter the team in several dual and triangular meets topping them off with the N.G. l.C. meet at Emory University and the G.I. A. A. meet at Grant Field. While the Wildcats are not expected to win many first places, they are sure to give a good account of themselves in upholding the tradition of the school. Prospects for a good time next year are very bright as most of this year's team are juniors. Those who will be back as a nucleus for a team next year are Jim Clay, Hugh Smith, and Croover Dempsey. F. A. SMITH, '34, BASEBALL HISTORY i When baseball practice started, Coach Cy Maddox was confronted with the task of selecting nine men to represent the school from the seventy-five odd candidates reporting. This task was especially difficult as there were only four lettermen returning from last year's squad. After several weeks of hard practice the team was picked, and the season began. The team picked was slightly green and inexperienced, but they made up in hustling and spirit what they lacked in ability. Although the first game of the season was lcst to Commercial by a score of eleven to ten, the team looked good and should improve greatly as the season progresses and at the close should be able to give any team a hard fight. Since most of this year's team are sopho- mores and juniors, next year's team will be one of the best in the history of the school. The most promising players for next year's team are Dempseyiand Camp, pitchersg Daniels and Davis, catchersg Brown, Bell, Collins, Seivers, Stephenson, and Kite, infieldersg and Clay and Melton in the outfield. Lewis and Principal, Paul D. West. After much discussion it was agreed that, due to the expense of renting a court, there would be no basket-ball team this year. With Russell the largest school in Fulton County, the absence of a basket-ball team to repre- sent her in the sport would do much to diminish her prestige among other schoo's. It was for these reasons that plans were pushed to obtain a gymnasium. Finally in January plans were com- pleted and work on the gymnasium begun. It is to be a 3514-,000.00 modern building with a 4-5x75 basket-ball court and two up-to-date dressing rooms with separate showers. Although the gymnasium is a C. W. A. project, the school was required tq raise 352,500 of the necessary funds. The building is expected to be completed the latter part of April or early May. Despite the lack of a court to practice on a team was organized by the Hi-Y and entered in the 135 lb. division of the Y. M. C. A. Basketball League. The team had an excellent record, end- ing up in second place in pre-tournament. Members of the team were Billy Epperson, Raymond McCoy, Ernest Stephenson, Elmo Stephenson, Ermine Brown, F. A. Smith, Sidney Waggner, and Glenn Kirkland. The Wildcats should have an excellent team next year as most of last year's team are juniors. Those returning who are expected to make the team are Loy Camp, Hugh Smith, Jim Clay, Ermine Brown, Billy Epperson, Elmo Stephenson and others. F. A. SMITH, '34, vfsfks. Previous to last year each home room had a literary society which met on Friday morning during a special period. These societies were not successful and the students soon lost interest ingthem because they had no definite aim. Consequently, the literary societies were omitted, and thelperiod on Friday morning was given to definite organizations. These clubs were dividd into groups, some of which met each Friday and some which met on every other Friday, alternately. This year, in addition to some of the older organizations which have been at Russell for many years-such as the Hi-Y, Girl Reserves, and French and Latin Clubs, there have been many new clubs organized. We. have a press club which has been giving Russell High much publicityg an aviation club which has been studying aviation and making modelsg al music club, a group of camp fire girls, a citizenship club, and many others. This school has also been for- tunate enough to secure a chapter of the Quill and Scroll, national high school journalism society, All of these clubs have been doing splendid work to help the school and the individual students. Much credit is due to the teachers who had charge of these clubs and to all the members. May all of them continue for many years doing their useful work. f'X V' Page 74 F --4- -A --v'--4-t-.'-------..----,- - r.... ....... ........ ..... ...... ....
