Arm- .K-x agree- s4, exigeiegeased; Page 27 HISTORY The Class of 1933 entered into a new and unknown realm as freshmen in the fall of 1929. This class was composed mostly of students from East Point, College Park, Hapeville, and Ben Hill. At first we had only rather vague ideas of our new standards. However, we became acquainted with the faculty, were fully initiated by upper classmen, and began our work in an energetic spirit. Our first vacation was a joyful one, but we were all more anxious to be in school than we believed ourselves. We had learned the meaning of school spirit, and were beginning to take a real pride in chear 01d Russell? When our second years work was started in September, 1930, we re- newed old acquaintances, welcomed many new students, as well as teach- ers, and settled down to another year of hard work. We were more than happy when time for vacation came. We had three glorious months of summer sports and gaieties. During our junior year, although we took up several new subjects and had to study harder, we found time to entertain the graduating class, and for other activities. According to usual procedure the year drew to an end and we were given another three months to pursue our own pleasures. We began our senior year with a new principal, Mr. Paul D. West, whose new policies have been very much to our liking and advantage. This has been a busy year for us with our numerous activities and our more advanced studies. We may point with pride to the achievements of our class in scholarship and athletics carried on during our years at Russell. Our class is fully represented in the various literary endeavors and all phases of athletics. And now the end approaches. A few days more and we cross the threshold of a new life. That will be the real test and we trust that the future holds for every member of this class of 1933 as much pleasure and real success as our school days have given. Reginald Thomason is a professional boxer. Claudine McEachern has become a cranial specialist with Mary Martin as her private nurse. Mary's assistants are Cora Belle Bracken, Evelyn Dunn, and Emma Baughn. Randohih Surles and Lamar Smith are selling Bottled Sunshine t0 natives in the Jungles. Jerry Robinson, Audrey Warnock, Miriam Burke, Anita Estes. Mildred Sisson, and Evelyn Hanna have composed a dancing Chorus and are traveling with a famous jazz orchestra. Albert Joiner and Jack Croley are teaching Dog Latin in Petland. Ruth Brown and Mildred Greer are bookkeepers for a large business concern in Maryland. Wilbur Martin has a position as Hoorwalker at Century Five and Ten-Cent Store in College Park. Christine Murphy is head of the History Department at Oglethorpe. Her assistants are Elizabeth Hilton and Earline Wesley. Jack Clav is directing a Technocracy class in Southern California. Libby Trimble is doing intensive research work on a Combination tooth paste and sandwich spread. Darby Coker and Charlie Branton are famous radio crooners. Edith Kadel is a missionary in Ben Hill. James Fowler, Perry Hunter, and George Farrar have become very successful live stock producers Jeanne Crowell, Jane O'Neal and Florence Smith are society leaders in New York. That is the memory that lingers in the mind of all the fans who saw the Russell Wildcats come through with eight straight Victories and one defeat in the football season of 1932. With practically the same team that represented Russell in ,31, Coach Bowen produced the greatest team that has ever toiled on this gridiron. The Wildcats assimilated their flaming spirit and as the season moved on they displayed a brand of football that could not he denied. In the first game of the season the Russellites were nosed out 13 to 6 by Decatur High, this being the only defeat of the season. Coming back strong in the next game, they defeated a big hut inexperi- enced eleven from Barnesville A. 81 M. The score was 8 t0 0. In this game the Wildcats exhibited some Of the best playing of the year. Another week of hard training ended in a game with Athens High. The final score was Russell 19, Athens 0. On the following Friday, Russell, well under way by this time, defeated Marist 13 t0 0. The most thrilling game of the season came on the next Friday. Rus- sellas opponent was U. S. B. Early in the third quarter the Bluebirds scored a touchdown, but failed to convert the extra point. The score re- mained 6 t0 0 until the last four minutes of play, When the Wildcats started a magnificent drive which ended in a touchdown and extra point. This victory of 7 to 6 was most impressive because Russell was without the ser- vices of three stellar linemenWGolightly, Faulkner and Dempsey. Then on Armistice Dav came the biggest game of the seasoneRlissell vs. Gainesville, at Cainesville. Again the Wildcats proved that they could not he stopped. After three quarters of hard fighting, Russell scored but failed to get extra point. The final count was 6 t0 0 in Russellis favor. On the next Friday, in a sea of mud. Russell defeated her old rival, Fulton. Due to the mud both teams were handicapped and the game ended with a 13 t0 0 Victory for Russell. A 45 t0 0 victory over Druid Hills High closed the 1932 football sea- son at Russell. This game was the eighth straight victory for the Wildcats. Prospects for a good team next year are promising. Several letter men will return next September. Those who will he lost by graduation are Colightly and Captain Ader- hold in the line, and Clay, Green, Simpson and Sims in the backfield. With only two veterans back, Coach Lewis had the job of filling the shoes of such players as White, Camp, and Yow, whom he had last year. Although the team won only five games, they did exceedingly well, tak- ing into considprmion the handicaps which they were under. The boys were able to practice very little due to the fact that Russell does not have a gymnasium. However, the team put forth an honest effort and at times Showed flashes of good basketball. The members of the squad who made the first team are McCoy and Mince, forwards; Webb and Jack Clay, guards; and Baskin, center. Baskin was the neucleus around which the team was built. He was the outstanding player 101' the season, scoring a total of 86 points. The team played ten games. The first game of the season was with Crifhn, which resulted in a 23 to 13 defeat for Russell. Next, Russell played her old rival, Fulton, and nosed them out by a score of 15 to 14, a close but convincing score. The boys were defeated by North Fulton 30 to 15. Another game with F ulton ended in a defeat for Russe11 by a score of 26 to 18. Then two games with Druid Hills brought in two more Victories for Russell. The score of the first game was 26 to 18, and the second was 21 to 20. Russell then jour- neyed t0 Grifhn where she defeated Spalding County High 2'2 to 21. On the following Friday night the boys played Newman and lost 51 t0 9. The last two games of the season ended in two more defeats. The first by Com- mercial, 31 to 22, and the second by U. S. 13., 31 to 15. With only flve letter men on the squad, the task turned out to be very difhcult. However, Coach Maddox produced a very successful team. The boys worked faithfully under their new coach and were rewarded by receiving letters and certihcates at the close of the season. Incidentally, Coach Maddox should have a good team next year as the majority of the boys are sophomores and juniors. The most promising prospects for next year$s team are as follows: Webb, Clay Jim, Scheaffer, Bostwick, Stephen- son, and Mince. In competition with the other schools, the team should be classed in the win column. They met much stern opposi- tion and emerged with Victorye-and sometimes defeateheap- ed upon their shoulderSebut always With the wreath of good sportsmanship and fairness with them. It has been said of the Russell Athletic teams that the opposition always enjoyed meeting Russell, win or lose, because of their manly conduct and sportsmanship. Coach Maddox entered his team into competition with the following schools: 1. G. M. A. and Decatur, at G. M. A. . Griffin, Decatur, and Avondale at Russell High School. . Decatur7 Avondale, and Druid Hills at Decatur. . N. G. I. C. meet at Gainesville. 2 3 4. Fifth District at Emory University. 5 6. State meet at Athens.
