Upon entering our school, each individual student selects a course of study he wishes to pursue. He may choose from either college preparatory or vocational subjects. Every graduating senior is required to have completed four units of English, three of social studies, one of both math and science, and seven major electives of his choice. Beyond these basic requirements, various special programs are offered which make available to the student specialized instruction within his own particular field of interest. For those interested in office occupations, there is a two-year commercial program which supplies the student who plans a career in this area with valuable on-the-job training in addition to typing, shorthand, and general office procedure. For the study of agriculture and related fields, such as industrial arts, there is a similar course of study. Included in this program is a class in ornamental horticulture which is open to boys and girls alike. In the area of home economics, there are a number of courses from which to choose. They are as follows: personal development and family life, basic home economics, advanced home economics, and occupational home economics. Instruction in the arts is offered by both the speech and music departments. In vocal and instrumental music as well as in speech, there are beginning and advanced classes. These various specialized programs coupled with the basic requirements make the curriculum at 57 Benjamin Russell High School one of its most valued assets. April 23, 1948 July 8, 1967 70 BENJAMIN RUSSELL HIGH SCHOOL Alexander City, Alabama As varied as the goals of each student are the unlimited opportunities that Benjamin Russell High School provides for its students. Many modern and efficient facilities, a progressive administration, and a forward-looking faculty all provide students with numerous possibilities for advancement. The building of a new auditorium, library, and additional classrooms in the past few years illustrates the school's aim to provide even more and better opportunities for its students. Since its creation in 1950, B. R. H.S. has grown from an enrollment of 499 to 900 in 1968. The purpose of the school - to serve others and prepare students for responsibilities - remains constant in the minds of the students and the teachers. Students are prepared to participate in and adequately meet the demands of life in our society. Thus continues the ever-growing effort of Benjamin Russell High School to serve. 71 72 ACTIVITIES 73 Wrestling cheerleaders Coach Lee and wrestlers Zhe ft amt Pep Rallies. . .
