These are our young years, our carefree years when time means only tomorrow. But we know that to everything there is a time--a time to laugh when we chat with good friends and a time to grieve when we read of man's inhumanity to man, a time to study so that we can be successful in a highly competitive world and a time to relax so that we can keep a healthy mind in spite of daily tensions. Because we are young, now is the time to laugh... to have fun... to be gay and merry, for there will never be another time like our young years. 8 CONTENTS Classes----------------------------------------------page 20 Features---------------------------------------------page 76 Activities-------------------------------------------page 101 Sports---------------------------------------------- page 126 Advertisements---------------------------------------page 146 Campus Life page 153 (left to right) P. Whatever may betide. We will follow her colors. Flung out to the sky. We will give our hearts' devotion To ole A. C. High 19 To everything there is a time . . . ... a time to learn Learning, the essence of school life, is the foundation for the future. What a student learns and applies in school will remain with him forever. Not only does he learn basic facts, but also he learns principles and attitudes which prepare him for a place in society. In school the student can compare himself with his peers and compete with them for self-satisfaction. Then he can judge for himself his own worth. Even though a student doesn’t see himself as a straight A” person, he still thrills at a sudden light of understanding in conquering a difficult subject. That victory is more important to him than any grade achieved in an easier subject. The Alexander City Junior High, Russell School, and Jim Pearson School all had numerous representatives in the Freshman Class. These freshmen were welcomed by their upperclassmen, and they patiently endured all the practical jobs with a smile and with the thought that they would be freshmen for only nine months. As the year progressed, rules and regulations soon became second nature to them. The class procedures and schedules no longer bewildered them as they learned quickly what was expected of them. They passed the freshmen year with flying colors and with hopes for their sophomore year. In the fall of 64 the same students, who just the year before, had entered high school, returned again for nine months of study and fun. As they already knew most of the school routine, they began in earnest the quest for knowledge. They contributed to the initiation of the new freshmen and congratulated themselves on the fact that they were now on the second rung of the ladder to graduation. The year of '65 brought with it the return of 209 juniors to B.R. H. S. These older and wiser students were looking forward to class rings and the Jr. -Sr. prom. Magazine sale, football, homecoming, basketball, and the eighth straight state championship wrestling were all highlights of their junior year. Yet, in the minds of most was the all important fact that the following year they would become seniors. With this achieve ment would come privileges and honors no other class would have. Before they knew it, their junior year was over, the summer months were gone, and they had evolved into full-fledged seniors. They entered B. R. H. S. in the fall of '66 for their last year. They were greeted by throngs of people whom they didn’t even know. Numerous honors, awards, and merits came to many deserving persons of this class of '67. Anxiety mounted on eagerness as the final days of school slowly came to a close. Graduation night ended a fruitful four years for 196 candidates for graduation of the class of '67 of Benjamin Russell High School. Before entering the ninth grade, a student should discuss his future plans with the principal or the counselor in order that he might choose a four year course of study which will best prepare him for his life's work. The occupational commercial course, open to juniors and seniors, includes typing, shorthand, bookkeeping, office practice and business English. When a student completes this two-year business course, it is expected that she will be able to go from high school directly into a full-time job. Providing vocational training in home economics is the occupational home economics course which prepares girls for work related to home economics--seamstresses, waitresses, nurses aids, and related occupations. In addition to basic agriculture. Agriculture III is designed to train boys in horticulture. Some students take this advanced work as a basis for a college major in horticulture, while others use this training on a job upon graduating from high school. The general course offers basic courses in all departments. For students who plan to go to college there are advanced courses in all subject areas. All students are required to take four years of English and three years of social studies. Social studies courses which are required include Alabama history and civics, American history, and economics and government. The basic requirements for graduation are as follows: four years of English, three of social studies, one of math, one of science, and seven electives chosen from the academic offerings. Each student must also take a minor elective each year. Minors include physical education, chorus, band, office and library practice. In addition to the regular nine-months school term, the Benjamin Russell High School maintains a summer program of study. Approximately eight different subjects are taught each summer. Classes are arranged for both enrichment and remedial work. 63 First row: Bill Abernathy, David Adair, David Alford, Amelia Allred, William Angle. Named for the late Benjamin Russell, the high school contains more than 118,000 square feet of space. It has thirty-nine classrooms, two shops, two auditoriums, a library, a lunchroom, offices for the principal, counselor, librarian, lunchroom manager, and coaches. It also includes a completely equipped Spanish lab, a biology lab, a chemistry lab, and a mechanical drawing lab. The suite occupied by the Home Economics Department includes a cooking lab, a sewing lab, and a model living room and dining room. The gymnasium has a seating capacity of 1,250, and the main auditorium, decorated in shades of Alabama red and gray, will seat 1,048 people. The Benjamin Russell High School campus covers thirty-one acres. This space is adequate for all types of physical education activities and for parking lots for students and faculty members. 73 The Benjamin Russell High School is more than a building; it is a visible reminder of what a town can accomplish when all its citizens unite for a worthy cause. The high school is unusual in that when it was constructed in 1950 not one penny of federal or state money was used in its construction. It was financed completely by donations from local citizens and industry. The Benjamin and Roberta Russell Foundation contributed generously to the fund, as did Avondale Mills. The stockholders of the East Alabama Fair Association donated thirty-one acres as the construction site. It was on this site that the Benjamin Russell High School, visible evidence of Alexander City's concern for and interest in its young people, became a reality. 74 BENJAMIN RUSSELL HIGH SCHOOL Alexander City, Alabama • Senior Maid Pat Burroughs Junior Maid Paula Champion 82 Sophomore Maid Anita Gothard Most Likely To Succeed Martha Johnson and Lynn Walton Best Dressed Margaret Bunn and Ricky Carter Wittiest John Petrey and Susan Scroggins Steve Kerley and Brenda Mask Best Personality Henry Foy and Catherine Whitehead Most Representative Juniors Danny Hayes and Debbie Brown I ■ « HOMECOMING LIBBY FORBUS - Homecoming Queen CLASS MAIDS - upper left - Martha Johnson, senior maid; upper right - Debbie Brown, junior maid; lower left - Kathy Burroughs, sophomore maid; lower right -Trina Forbus, freshman maid. I 15 An important part of our education is learning the meaning of good leadership. This gives us strength and courage to do the very best we can in whatever we do throughout life. It fills us with determination to strive for truth and justice, for these will make our future secure. Through various clubs and organizations of school we are given the opportunity to express our opinions and to use our talents to the best of our abilities. Although our leadership today seems like a small and unimportant part, it prepares us for the world of tomorrow - a brave and more daring world and one that will call for great leadership. Leadership can be a,dangerous and deadly thing. We must be careful, for the way in which we lead will be the way that we are followed. We must be fair and democratic leaders and instill in others these ideals. In order to maintain the freedom and liberty of our great nation, we must prepare to meet the challenges by electing great leaders. These leaders will come from our generation of today; therefore, we must acquire a knowledge of leadership. Leadership is a powerful anvil which should be guarded by strong and creative hands -hands that will build a great nation which will be left unscarred by ageless time. 116 F.H.A OFFICERS Lajuana French Barbara Hamlet Sandra Sharpe -Linda McDaniel Linda Patterson Karen Forehand Luanne Tapley • Kathy Baker - - • -----President -Vice-President -----Secretary - -----Reporter Parliamentarian - -----Historian ---------Pianist ----Song Leader (left to right) FIRST ROW: Lajuana French, Barbara Hamlet. The cheering shouts at the moment of victory or the silent looks when a game is lost are all part of each student’s endeavor to back his school team. These feelings compose school spirit. It surges through a crowded gym at a pep rally and can be sensed by an athlete on a cold wrestling mat. Hand-in-hand with good team spirit is loyalty, the quality to praise the team in victory or defeat. Student support is appreciated by a winning team, but to a losing team the school loyalty is deeply felt, for in moments of despair the team can gain heart from encouraging fans. These two qualities, loyalty and school spirit, combine together to create the atmosphere of support and praise which is invaluable to team success. PHYSICAL EDUCATION The physical education program for the Benjamin Russell High School is headed by S. H. Lyon, for boys, and by Mrs. Barbara Young, for girls. Its facilities include a spacious, well-equipped gymnasium, showers, lockers, a wrestling room, and lecture rooms in the main building. Outside practice areas include two tennis courts, a cinder track, archery area, and the Jim Pearson Football Stadium. B. R. H. S. physical education students have available to them some of the finest equipment in the state. Of particular pride are the top quality wrestling mats, valued at over $1,000 each. Students also enjoy the various sized trampolines. The athletic teams' uniforms are manufactured by the Southern Manufacturing Company, a division of Russell Mills, and are among the finest in the nation. These uniforms are washed in the school's own laundry. This laundry is completely equipped with washers, dryers, and an extractor. The athletic program has the support of not only the school administration but also the community through the Alexander City Athletic Association. 129 AWARD WINNERS Robert Headley: Outstanding Lineman--Fair Store Award; Steve Davis: Most Valuable Player—Outlook Award. To this add a dash of humor here and there and serve with a sprinkling of good friends. This is an old recipe--tried and true—for it was such a combination of ingredients in the early colonies which made men dare to dream of a free nation, free of the tyrannical rule of England. It was such a combination that moved to dream of the right of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness --the right of each individual to seek the fulfillment of his own dream of his place in the world of his day. Today we, too, have a right to dream of a better world and to try to make that dream come true. We must not wait until we are part of the world community before we begin our dream. Here at BRHS we can begin to build; we can develop out talents, whatever they may be. We can support with our loyalty our school sports and patriotic activities; we can find a friendliness in our relations with each other which let’s others know that we feel that all of us are important parts of this school—the leaders and the followers. 166 THOUGHTS ON BEAUTY - Someone wrote, Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Surely there is no more profound verity, for loveliness cannot be defined by reading about it in written words and sentences. It must be seen and felt. It is an undefined intangible which makes a moonlit lake or a beautiful girl capture the admiration and heart of an onlooker. Nor is loveliness confined or limited; a little particle of beauty is found in everything from a tiny grain of sand to the marble perfection of the Taj Mahl. Yet no one person or thing possesses all the qualities of loveliness. So why is there a general agreement that a particular girl is beautiful? If beauty is in the eye of the beholder, what characteristics do so many people see in her? Some may see a glowing face, a warm smile, a sympathetic heart, or a true affection for other people. Others may see a perfect body, a good sport, a great dancer, a pal, or just a wholesome, allround girl. But to each onlooker, she is beautiful. It is truly a great honor to receive the acclaim of being a beautiful girl. Cloud 9 May 29, 1967 Seniors, Remember the day you first came here? Remember the games that you did cheer? Remember the magazine sale and the annual prom? Remember the teachers who were both gay and calm? ....Remember? Remember the day that you got your rings? Remember the fun that AEA brings? Remember the Christmas party and final exams? Remember getting into and out of jams? ....Remember? Remember those last days of school? Remember that you dared not break a rule? Remember as you bid the school adieu, Remember that the future holds things bright for you. ....Remember. 168 A UTOGRAPHS A UTOGRAPHS AUTOGRAPHS AUTOGRAPHS AUTOGRAPHS 173 AUTOGRAPHS 174 A UTOGRAPHS 175
