We learn about the world around us from books, from people, from our own successes and failures. Using this knowledge as a guide and a preparation for life's challenge, we can become more productive citizens. Learning does not stop as we grow older. New ideas are formulated; new discoveries are made. To continue to grow, we must continue to learn. Senior Class Officers (BOTTOM ROW) Richard McCollough, treasurer; Martha Bass, secretary. He may choose a commercial, a vocational, or a college preparatory course. New to the curriculum this year is the occupational commercial course. Offered to juniors and seniors, this program includes typing, shorthand, bookkeeping, office practice, and business English. When a student finishes two years under this program, it is expected that he will be able to go directly from high school into a job. Also new to the curriculum is the occupational home economics course which prepares girls for work related to home economics - nurses aides, seamstresses, waitresses, and similar occupations. Vocational Industrial Education provides classroom and on-the-job training for students in a variety of occupations. Nursing, electronics, and mechanics draw much student interest. For students who wish to attend an institution of higher learning upon graduation, B. R. H. S. has a solid curriculum of advanced courses. The Mathematics Department offers Algebra II, Algebra III and Trigonometry in addition to Algebra I and plane geometry. The Science Department has four advanced courses - biology, physiology, chemistry, and physics. Three years of Spanish are offered. Mechanical drawing is also included in the curriculum. All students are required to take four years of English and three years of social studies. Social studies courses which are required include Alabama history and civics, American history, and government and economics. The basic requirements for graduation are as follows: four years of English, three of social studies, one year of science, one year of mathematics, and seven electives chosen from academic offerings. Each student must also take a minor elective each year. Minors include physical education, chorus, band, and office and library practice. Echo By Martha Johnson Happiness is a wonderful word. Its meanings refresh men's hearts Like the beautiful symmetry of a stately church Or the curving glow of a moonlit arch. What are some meanings of happiness That would lift men's souls to plains on high? One is the promise of joy and peace And the fulfillment of a productive life. Another is watching a dying sun Sink slowly in the far off West— To return again and light our way After a night of sleep and rest. Happiness brings the loving smile Which cleanses tongues of angry words And erases scorn and hurt disdain So that sounds of joy can again be heard. Happiness thinks nothing of running over Its cup of plentiful supply So sweet song of lilting heart Can be heard and felt in reply. Happiness is the fulfillment of dreams. Coming out of the depths of despair, That once again take root and grow In spite of castles in need of repair. Happiness signifies the state of man's soul When he rejoices in things that are good. If good things were done and replaced Those of bad.. .Oh, if only man would! 73 Activities 75 Happiness . . . a sense of belonging. Men work together, ” 1 told him from the heart, Whether they work together or apart. Working together for a common goal is the most worthwhile experience a group can have. It is what keeps school life rolling smoothly and the earth turning easily on its axis. Cooperation with one another can often ease the greatest tension over a world crisis or simply a problem in school. In school, belonging to a club, an extra-curricula organization, or just the student body can give to the students a goal to work toward. It the student feels that he belongs, he can further his education, get enjoyment and fun out of school life, and contribute to the betterment of his school, home, and com- munity. Club Sweethearts Thoughts on... beauty Beauty as we feel; it is something indescribable; what it is or what it means can never be said. Beauty down through the ages .has played an important role in men's lives; it has eased the pangs of despair and heightened the joys of achievement. Though beauty often signifies fame and wealth, it does not necessarily do so all the time. There is beauty in a rising sun over a cold blue lake - but no fame. There is beauty in a flock of wild geese, rising in hurried flight over a watery swampland - but no wealth. There are myriads of things which hold beauty, within and without, but man cannot pinpoint this beauty. He cannot even explain what part beauty plays in the advance of man down through the ages. He simply knows it is there. 120 Class Mistory As the members of the Senior Class of 1966 glance at the theme of the Echo, Happiness Is..., they at once start reminiscing, recalling happy times, happy faces. Floods of memories engulf them as they fondly remember that 255 little six-year-olds started their path of learning at the same time - some at Jim Pearson, some at Russell School, and some at the city elementary school. The elementary and junior high years passed swiftly, and the seniors remember their first hesitant steps upon the portal of the imposing B. R. H. S. school building late in the year of 1962. As the year progressed, their feet became swifter and surer as they rapidly learned about the building, which for four years was to be their home away from home. “ Their return in 1963 was less hesitant and less dreadful, as for the second time they began to tread the halls of learning in which so many past sophomores, like them, had walked. They could look with amusement at the poor freshmen whom they had so closely resembled the year before. In September of 1965 the halls of B. R. H. S. resounded with the footfalls of juniors who were eager with anticipation of getting class rings. Later, these same juniors were caught up in the rush of selling magazines to provide money for the highlight of the spring of the year - the Junior-Senior Prom. And also taking top billing for the juniors was the thrill of having only one more year to go until they would see their senior year. Finally, memories which are still fresh come surging forward, reminding the seniors that this is the year for which they have waited so long. This is the year of fund-raising for a final donation to their beloved school, their exciting senior trip, a year of enjoying, that feeling of accomplishment when they look back over the years of hard studying. This is the year in which seniors participate in their school play, their last try at Christmas decorating, their last Twirp Week, and, last of all, their final enjoyment of being with other people who study and learn and sing their high school alma mater with pride. Yes, memories which bring joy also bring a touch of sadness to the 182 candidates for graduation as they glance through the Echo. The theme, Happiness Is.... reminds them that many happy memories lie in the pages of their past school life, but always there is the shining joy of looking forward to the future. Martha Johnson Echo Historian PH’ 123 Happiness is . . . loyalty to our school. Loyalty is the holiest good in the human heart. Every student who graduates from B. R. H. S. goes into Life with an intense pride in his alma mater. Our pride in our school remains with us all through life. With such a beautiful school and wonderful faculty, it would be impossible for us not to take pride in our school. Four years at Benjamin Russell better prepares each student for whatever path he decides to take upon graduation because he knows he has been well trained to solve his problems, to enjoy his leisure time, and to know that he can be a useful citizen. 124 football SEPTEMBER 10 - The Wildcats traveled to Roanoke to overcome the Tigers 25-3. Each year representatives, sponsored by local civic clubs, attend Boys State and Girls State. Two students are chosen annually to attend Freedom Forum in Searcy, Arkansas, and the Student Conference on American government at Jacksonville State College. Student Council elections are patterned after adult elections, and B. R. H. S. students receive instruction in the use of voting machines. Cynthia Holdridge and Martha Bass, representatives to the Student Conference on American government held on the Jacksonville State College campus. Carol, like all B. R. H. S. students, learns to use a voting machine. 150 Way of jCife The observance of Veterans Day, a tradition of long standing, is a high point in the school year at B. R. H. S. Students assemble on the campus surrounding the flagpole for a flag-raising ceremony. The band plays a medley of patriotic songs, and after speeches by students and a member of the American Legion, the program closes with the playing of Taps. This year Miss Nellie Bonner, who has been in charge of the Veterans Day program since its beginning at B. R. H. S., was presented a special citation for patriotism by the American Legion. Students assemble for the annual Veterans Day program. Flag-raising by the Boy Scouts is the high point of the program. 151 Christmas Mr. Waid's.door was a real eye-catcher. Every year at Christmas time students decorate their homeroom doors, and the Student Council places a tree in the lobby. In the door competition Mrs. Curvin's room won first prize, Mrs. Campbell's, second prize, and Mr. Evan's, third prize. All rooms deserved recognition for their creativeness, which ranged from religious themes to humorous ones. William Stevens helps with lobby decorations. Susan Smith and Jenny Neighbors were on the clean- up detail. 152 Drama This year, for the first time, B. R. H. S. has speech classes and an active Drama Club.
