Class History For twelve eventful years, the Senior Class of 1963 has been striving for and looking forward to the fulfillment of a great dream—G raduation. Now has come the time for our dream to be a reality. In September, 1951, approximately two hundred twenty-eight boys and girls embarked upon the first phase of this dream as they entered the first grade at the Alexander City, Avondale, and Russell Elementary Schools. It was here that we received the beginnings of a strong educational foundation. As each school year passed, we progressed a step closer to the realization of our dream. We were also wiser, more mature, and had the full understanding of the value of an education. These boys and girls entered Benjamin Russell High School as freshmen in the fall of 1959. At first we were frightened but soon became familiar with the school which would house us for the next four years. These four years of high school were to be the most important of our lives for, during this time, the educational foundation for our future lives was given its final polishing. Soon our class became a part of the daily routine. We studied, worried over tests and exams, exclaimed over report cards, and supported the school's teams with great spirit here. Our freshman and sophomore years passed quickly. In our junior year, we held our annual magazine sale and proudly told of selling $6,000 worth of magazines. At Christmas that year, we became the proud possessors of our class rings. Everyone was amused as we showed our rings to everyone we met. Later, in May, we entertained the senior class at a prom held at the National Guard Armory. Much hard work went into the preparation of the theme which was “The Theme From a Summer Place. That year ended and semester tests, we gave a sigh of relief. We had reached the final step of our dream—the twelfth grade and graduation. When school opened in September, 1962, we, the seniors, were filled with a feeling of pride and maturity. Many changes had taken place within the school. New rooms had been prepared and painted, ready for the overflowing number of students. Also, work began on a new school auditorium. Regretfully we learned the new auditorium would not be completed in time for graduation. The months passed, and graduation drew nearer and nearer. Now that graduation has come, we realize that we will leave our home of four years to enter into our separate worlds. Some of us will attend college, business schools and others, trade schools. Others will obtain jobs or get married. We will all become part of tomorrow’s leaders. Our dream has been fulfilled! CHARLOTTE NIBLETT —Historian
