To this add a dash of humor here and there and serve with a sprinkling of good friends. This is an old recipe—tried and true—for it was such a combination of ingredients in the early colonies which made men dare to dream of a free nation, free of the tyrannical rule of England. It was such a combination that moved men to dream of the right of “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness the right of each individual to seek the fulfillment of his own dream of his place in the world of his day. Today we, too, have a right to dream of a better world and to try to make that dream come true. We need a talent for learning—not just the learning of the world of books but of the world of people. We need the deep loyalty and patriotism of our forefathers; we need the friendly cooperative spirit which made the founding and continuance of this nation possible. We need to feel at peace with our fellowman. We must not wait until we are part of the world community before we begin our dream. Here at BRHS we can begin to build; we can develop our talents, whatever they may be. We can support with our loyalty our school sports and patriotic activities; we can find a friendliness in our relations with each other which lets others know that we feel that all of us are important parts of this school — the leaders and the followers. Now is the time to begin our dream. nnii h i irnrrr tif Benjamin Russell High School -ALa Water Dear old high school, We love her, Our ideal and pride; We will hold up her standards, Whatever may betide. THREE SCIENCE LABORATORIES. HOME ECONOMICS KITCHEN. SEWING ROOM, FITTING ROOM AND OFFICES FOR THE PRINCIPAL. LIBRARIAN, DIETICIAN AND COACHES. AN ADJOINING BUILDING HOUSES THE INDUSTRIAL ARTS AND AGRICULTURE SHOPS, WITH CLASSROOMS FOR EACH SUBJECT, AND A BAND ROOM. Above is the architect’s concept of what the new auditorium, now under construction, will look like when it is completed. This completely air-conditioned structure will be ready for use by September 1, 1963. Valued at over $300,000, the auditorium will have a seating capacity of 1,050. For future dramatic productions there will be a cyclorama stage effect and proper lighting facilities. Included in the new addition will be practice and storage rooms for the band, and an office for the band director. Curriculum Before entering the ninth grade of the Benjamin Russell High School each student should counsel with the principal or the guidance director and decide his course of study for the four years of his attendance. He may choose a commercial, a vocational or a college preparatory course. The commercial courses offered include Typing I and II, Shorthand I and II, bookkeeping, business law and business arithmetic. Many BRHS students who have followed the commercial course have gone directly from this school into full-time employment. Vocational courses which train students for future work include journalism, agriculture, industrial arts and diversified occupations. Training in home economics is also offered. For students who wish to attend an institution of higher learning upon graduation, some of the college preparatory and academic courses are in the field of social studies. They are American history, civics, Alabama history, world history, democracy and economics. The mathematics department offers Algebra I and II, plane geometry, solid geometry, trigonometry, and general math. General science biology, physics and chemistry are subjects taught by the Science Department. Spanish I and II are the only foreign language courses offered. The basic requirements for graduation are: four years of English; two years of social studies, one of which must be American history; one year of mathematics; one year of science, and six electives in addition to four years of minor credit. Minor elective credits may be earned in physical education, band, chorus, office or library work. • • Administration Miss Claire Nell Fuller, secretary to the superintendent; Charles Farrow, supervisor of instruction; L. People of the modern world are eager to grow in learning as new frontiers unfold before them. To this educational pursuit BRHS adds an important step. The philosophy of BRHS is to prepare all students, whether they be college-bound or not, for their future. There are science, math, and English programs designed for students who wish to go into these fields. For students who wish to enter the business world, there are commercial subjects, such as typing, shorthand, and bookkeeping. BRHS has a D. O. department which gives students the opportunity to learn while working. Agricultural-minded students are taught farming in BRHS agricultural classes. During their high school years, students learn to understand and appreciate the principles of democracy. They learn basic skills and attitudes which will be necessary in their new social adjustment. In addition, students learn self-control, respect for others, responsibility, and cooperation. All these objectives which are taught to the students of BRHS help each student to lead a richer and fuller life. A recipe for dreams aeneroui ijjrinhtini . Class History For twelve eventful years, the Senior Class of 1963 has been striving for and looking forward to the fulfillment of a great dream—G raduation. Now has come the time for our dream to be a reality. In September, 1951, approximately two hundred twenty-eight boys and girls embarked upon the first phase of this dream as they entered the first grade at the Alexander City, Avondale, and Russell Elementary Schools. It was here that we received the beginnings of a strong educational foundation. As each school year passed, we progressed a step closer to the realization of our dream. We were also wiser, more mature, and had the full understanding of the value of an education. These boys and girls entered Benjamin Russell High School as freshmen in the fall of 1959. At first we were frightened but soon became familiar with the school which would house us for the next four years. These four years of high school were to be the most important of our lives for, during this time, the educational foundation for our future lives was given its final polishing. Soon our class became a part of the daily routine. We studied, worried over tests and exams, exclaimed over report cards, and supported the school's teams with great spirit here. Our freshman and sophomore years passed quickly. In our junior year, we held our annual magazine sale and proudly told of selling $6,000 worth of magazines. At Christmas that year, we became the proud possessors of our class rings. Everyone was amused as we showed our rings to everyone we met. Later, in May, we entertained the senior class at a prom held at the National Guard Armory. Much hard work went into the preparation of the theme which was “The Theme From a Summer Place. That year ended and semester tests, we gave a sigh of relief. We had reached the final step of our dream—the twelfth grade and graduation. When school opened in September, 1962, we, the seniors, were filled with a feeling of pride and maturity. Many changes had taken place within the school. New rooms had been prepared and painted, ready for the overflowing number of students. Also, work began on a new school auditorium. Regretfully we learned the new auditorium would not be completed in time for graduation. The months passed, and graduation drew nearer and nearer. Now that graduation has come, we realize that we will leave our home of four years to enter into our separate worlds. Some of us will attend college, business schools and others, trade schools. Others will obtain jobs or get married. We will all become part of tomorrow’s leaders. Our dream has been fulfilled! Shirley wanted so very much to be a part of this Senior Class, to have her picture in the yearbook, and most of all to march that May night in the stadium and receive her high school diploma. Although she knew her time was limited by her condition, she lived with courage and grace. In facing life, and, ultimately, death, she left a lesson which all of us will remember. BRHS vs. OPELIKA On October 5 the BRHS Wildcats journed to Opelika to pull the Bulldogs’ teeth. After a wild-scoring game by both teams, the final score stood at a very unusual 20-20 tie. BRHS vs. SYLACAUGA Back home after three games, the Wildcats welcomed the Sylacauga Aggies to their den. The ’Cats, seeking revenge against a team that had tied and beaten them in two successive years, came at the Aggies hot and heavy. When the smoke cleared, the Wildcats had taken the Aggies, 27-7. BRHS vs. AUBURN Seeking their fourth victory in six games, the 'Cats took on the Tigers of Auburn on October 19. In one of their best games of the season, the Wildcats stopped Auburn completely and rolled to a 19-0 victory. BRHS vs. VALLEY The Wildcats went upset-hunting to Valley on October 26 to play the Rams. Valley, who had a truly great team, had other ideas. The Rams rolled goalward time after time and ripped the ’Cats 39-0. BRHS vs. B. B. COMER BRHS had its Homecoming on November 2. The Wildcats had a football feast the same night. The 'Cats, very inspired, took the Sylacauga team by a score of 33-13. BRHS vs. DADEVILLE The Wildcats again won the Seller’s Trophy on November 9, but they had to fight a very fine Dadeville team down to the wire. All of the scoring took place in the first half, but the battling continued throughout the game. Final score: BRHS—7 Dadeville—6. BRHS vs. TALLASSEE The BRHS Wildcats closed out their 1962 campaign at Tallassee on November 16. They closed it out in high style, for the surge of white-shirted Wildcats could not be halted, and they rolled on to their seventh victory in ten games by a very convincing 41-7 score. Championship. During the seven years of wrestling under the direction of Coach Lee, the Benjamin Russell High School has attained two third places, one second place, and four first places. In 1956, this school's first year in the new sport, the Wildcats gained a third place title in the state; then the next year Coach Lee clamped down on the “second best” team and turned it into a champion. During he '59 season, Lee’s Wlidcats lost only one match. This was a slim loss for Benjamin Russell, and has been the only defeat for the Wildcats in the last four years. There has been but one team coming close to beating the Wildcats since then, that being Enterprise. The score was 20 to 19. The years '60 and '61 saw the Wildcats with almost identical teams. The Wildcats in 1960 had an all junior-sophomore team which took the state title by a large margin. When these boys became seniors in '61, they repeated their previous year’s record by taking the state crown again by a large margin. Starting the year of '62, Coach Lee was unsure of his team, but as the season progressed the spirit and determination of the boys showed they were set on taking the state championship again. Coach Lee turned them into the champions that they wanted to be. As the wrestling years have rolled by, Coach Lee has produced twenty eight individual state champions, but some of these boys holding the championship honor as many times as three years in a row. As anyone can see, the records that Coach Lee has obtained will be hard to match. As society reporter for the town’s newspaper, I attended, not only to see my old classmates but to get a story. As I drove up to the parking lot of the splendid new building designed by Eleanor Cameron, I saw a group of men gathered around a fabulous 1973 sports car. Recognizing former classmates, I went over. I was surprised to learn that Buddy Moore. Ronald Brown, and Kenneth Price were the designers of this marvelous car. Also in the group were Rayford Keel, Jimmy McCrady and Lonnie Hutcherson, special mechanics for the Pontiac division. Donald McClellan, owner of a string of service stations, told me that he was the proud owner of the car. Entering the Club. I was greeted by B. B. Sellers, the mayor of Alexander City, and Janet Price, owner and hostess of the Country Club. B. B. led me to the banquet room and over to the table of honor. There I chatted with Ray Horton, President of the United States, and the First Lady, the former Jewel Dean Mason. I noticed that Jimmy Blankenship and Eddie Cannon, policemen of Alexander City, were serving as bodyguards for the President. Also among the honorees were Jimmy Spann, Attorney General of the United States; Kent Riddle, the Secretary of Agriculture, and Lynn Forbus, present principal of BRHS. Talking with the First Lady, I discovered that other former classmates were also government officials—Earl Smith, the Secretary of War; Bobby Scott, Secretary of State; Charlotte Riley, Ambassador to Cuba; and Sheila Speaks, the official flagmaker of the United States. Talking further with B. B., I found that four city officials had been recently elected by his cabinet. These were Charles Brown, Director of Public Safety; Laura Caston, City Treasurer; Bennett Massey, head of the Sanitation Department, and Ronnie Turner, the Commissioner of Prevention of Cruelty to Wayward Cats and Dogs. Hearing loud laughter, I went over to a large crowd and saw Bobby Chapman, chief obstetrician at Russell Hospital, talking with many former BRHS football players. In the group were Tony Wendling, manufacturer of Bone Dog Biscuits; Larry Bolt, president of Bolt’s Factory; Walls Meigs, owner of Walls’ Paper Company; Joe Curvin, star quarterback of the Green Bay Packers, and Franklin Forbus, professor of economics at Yale. They were recalling the exciting football games back in 1962. Overhearing someone discussing acting, I turned around and saw many TV stars. Rushing over, I greeted Beverly Hill, star of Beverly Hillbillies;’’ Cale Neighbors, Dr. Kildare’s nurse; Jesse Speaks, star of Jesse Speaks;’’ Ozzie Osburn and Harriet Hales, stars of Ozzie and Marriet, and Billy Futral, the emcee of the TV program,, Keep Talking.’’ They told me that Sandra Estes, Hollwood movie queen, was unable to attend, for she was making a movie with Warren Beatty. I also recognized in the group some well-known TV com-mercialists. They included Frances Latimer, the Tetley Tea Taster; Ceorge Mason, who acts as Speedy Alka-Seltzer;’’ Karyl Julian, a Crest Tooth Paste Tester, and Barbara Wilbanks, who smiles for tooth paste commercials. As I mingled with the crowd, I saw many of the present teachers, educators, and students. Included were Gail Bonner, English teacher at BRHS; Margaret Forbus, typing instructor at BRHS; Donnie Daniel, principal at at Russell School, and his secretary, Rowena Bentley, and Gil Cash, truant officer for BRHS. The Dean of Women for Auburn, Susan Heard, and the Dean of Women for Alabama. Louise Westbrook, were discussing education with Cerald Stearns, professor of history at Wadley Tech, and J. L. Grant,a graduate student at Oxford University. I was very glad that so many of my classmates had become interested in education. Looking suddenly toward the door, I saw Clenda Forbus. a former Miss America,” enter with a comical-looking group. Juliet Barnes, clown of Barnum Bailey Circus, was dressed in her clown costume. Ann Martin, a genuine beatnik, was dressed in the current beatnik style and was spouting poetry to Gayle Kennedy, owner of a world famous pizza parlor, and William Abbett, the tramp of 1973. Listening with a smile of amusement were Sandra Breed, world famous author, Anita Powell, photographer for Life, and Yvonne Cullars, a famous archaelogist. Juliet told me that two other former BRHS students were with Barnum Bailey Circus. They were Brenda Gregg, a bareback rider, and Patsy Gaither, the world’s tallest midget. Swinging my eyes around, I suddenly saw an awesome figure. I soon recognized Denny Jones, the current Mr. America. How the girls were swooning. He was talking with Jimmy Denham, heavyweight champion of the world; Alfred Riley, Olympic track star; Aaron Shaddix, drag strip ace, and Billy Watson, the men’s world champion tiddly-wink player. Later at the dinner table, I sat down between Tommy Thompson, a missionary to Siberia, and Forrest Tate, president of the Woodmen of the world. Across the table were Curtis Benton, monkey scientist at Cape Canaveral, and his assistants, Louise Coger and Virginia Love. They were discussing the current space project with Betty Coan, designer of space clothing, and Brenda Magouryk, the first woman astronaut. I overheard Brenda say that Myra Harry was now a major-general in the Air Force, and that Joan Adcox was an airline stewardess. Then came the pre-dinner speeches. The speakers. The speakers were introduced by Bill Fain, America’s No. 1 disc jockey, and Robert Smith, sports announcer for NBC. The first speaker was Gregory Robertson, the governor of Alabama. Following the governor was Ouida Kennedy, a missionary to the Belgium Congo. It seems that she had discovered there a professional wrestler named Joe Foshee. Ouida was followed by Ronald James, editor of the Progressive Farmer. After Ronald has given us a stirring account of crop planting, the last speaker, Harold Crout, world famous chiropractor, was introduced. After the speakers, the group was entertained by Linda Brewer, a concert pianist. Following was a modern dance given by Jane Caldwell and Cay Duck, famous New York dancers. Mary Ann Neighbors, renounced comic, concluded the entertainment with jokes concerning her goose farm. By that time everyone had finished dinner and a huge cake was brought out to commemorate our reunion. I was told that the cake had been baked by Martha Towns, manager of the bakery at the Piggly Wiggly, now owned by Freddie McCain and Dale Anderson. Eager to get a closer look at the cake, I rushed forward and bumped into A. J. Price and Wendell Boos. A. J. told me that he now manufactured frozen band-aids for cold cuts. Laughing, Wendell told me that he was president of the Crybaby Tissue Company. Hearing our laughter. Mike Washburn, Bobby Brewer, and Jim Wilder joined us. I laughed even harder when Mike said that he was the manufacturer of Wash washing machines. Bobby had just become editor of Playboy magazine and was very excited over the forthcoming issue. Rather sadly. Jim stated that he was selling hot dogs at Wind Creek Park. At the sudden sound of music, I glanced over at the bandstand. Who should be leading the orchestra but Ronnie Florine, director of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra! After dancing with Billy Paul Austin, captain of the Boston Celtics; Ronald Claunch, president of Crunch Candy Company, and Claud Culberson, owner of the Horseshoe Bend Motel, I retired to the sidelines to gather more news. Seeing a group of former women classmates, I went over and asked how they were. I was told that Linda Reeves. Barbara Allredge. Clenda Lankford and Peggy Prince had been elected Mrs. Homemakers of America. I then saw Linda Anthony, a famous New York hair stylist, and her assistant, Linda Hutcherson. Modeling their latest hair creations were Susan Price, Julia Strickland, and Joyce Smith, New York fashion models. Nancy Taunton, a wig manufacturer, spoke up and said that Enda Earl Woodfin and Betty Kilgore were her wig models. I couldn’t believe that they were wearing wigs. Others in the group included Charlotte McCain, manufacturer of Vo.lkswagens; Betty Harry, manufacturer of lawn-mowers, and Patsy Peppers, owner of a string of Dairy Queens. Everyone was suddenly watching the dance floor as Tommy Hagan, chief lifeguard at Wind Creek Park, and Nancy Holley, the National Skiing Champion of 1927, exhibited the latest dance craze, the Scrambler. I was much surprised to learn that John Simpson, the current number one rock ’n’ roll star, had introduced the Scrambler. As the dance ended. I found myself caught up in a business discussion. Karen Reese, manufacturer of Reese Buttercups; Beverly Veazey, manufacturer of Kosher Charcoaled Pickled Sows Ears, and Pam Duncan, owner of Dairyland Farms, were telling Leon Northington, president of Northern Paper Company. Benny Kitchens, owner of the Dairy Creem, and Charles McCanus, manufacturer of vitality pills for lazy people. Benny McLeod, who runs the local funeral home, said that his business was dead. With that morbid note, I left that group and moved to another one. Here I chatted with Robbie Scott, the win of the Year, and Elizabeth Nolen, who had just won the Kentucky Derby on a horse named Too Late, owned by the famous horsebreeders. Darlene Wilson and Joyce Blenkship. Too, I saw jamar Kilgore and Robert Taunton, race drivers, who had both won the Indianapolis 500 Race. Joining us were Sue Phillips and Martha Bryant, world tennis champions. I felt proud that BRHS has produced so many notables in the field of sports. At two o’clock, the reunion party ended, and I prepared to leave. While going to the door, I was met by Ronnie Walters, a wealthy pharmacist. He laughed and said that I had not yet talked to him. I apologized and asked how he was doing. He explained that he, Jimmy Shaw, and Ceorge Hardwick had developed a pill to relieve colds and headaches from hangovers. He said that they were also developing an instant martini mix, complete with the olives. I shook my head and went to my car. As I drove away, I had a feeling of pride for the achievement and success of my classmates. Too, I had gotten a very complete story for the newspaper. —Charlotte Niblett, Prophet Committee members: Mike Washburn Bobby Brewer Elizabeth Nolen Ann Martin Sheila Speaks Joyce Dobbs (upper left) He chickened out!
