Its serious moments were spent in various ways. We worked long hours on classwork and homework, spent serious, thoughtful moments at Morning Watch for devotionals before school, worked hard writing and making pictures to publish the Echo and Cinder, remembered our soldiers of past wars in the patriotic Veterans’ Day program, and finally reached that long-awaited and final serious moment: Graduation. Many events went into the making of the fun-filled moments of belonging. There were all our band trips, the AHSPA Convention in Tuscaloosa, student council conventions and workshops, football dances after the home games, the fcotball and basketball banquets which climaxed their respective seasons, decorating cars and floats and preparing for Homecoming festivities, the Senior banquet, the gala Junior-Senior prom, the Christmas card sale to help finance the Echo, the day the juniors received their class rings and the Junior magazine sale. Then there were those gay moments of stardom featuring Miss Echo, the girl who most nearly represents the spirit of BRHS and the maids from each class who belonged to her court, our homecoming queen and homecoming maids, those students chosen for the Senior Who's Who, the DAR Ccod-Citizenship Girl, the editor of the Echo, the officers of each class, the officers of each club, and the girls chosen as club sweethearts. Victory was our motto in that wonderful year. Our undefeated football team captured the title of the Confederate Conference and boasted many individual champs. Two seniors, jimmy Foshee and Hershel Hicks, were named as co-captains of the team. In addition to the football team, our fine basketball, wrestling, baseball, track, tennis and swimming teams along with rousing pep rallies imbued every BRHS student with triumphant moments of victory. Remembering cur loyal patrons and their many kindnesses and firm support of our teams, our band, our annual, and our projects gave us grateful moments of appreciation. ♦ ♦ ♦ Three The Benjamin Russell High School — The Fairgrounds — Alexander City, Alabama Erected in 1950 Accredited by the Southern Ass’n in 1951 ♦ --------- ♦ --------- ♦ THE ALEXANDER CITY BOARD OF EDUCATION Mr. T. Four The Curriculum Each student, guided by his parents, should decide what type of training he expects to receive from BRHS before he enters the ninth grade, and he should select his subjects according to his decision. The curriculum of BRHS is well prepared to meet the needs of the students. There are basic requirements for graduation from BRHS which include English—four years; social studies—two years, American history being required; mathematics—one year; science—one year; a minor subject—four years. The curriculum offers the following courses in the various studies: social studies—American history, civics and Alabama history, world history, democracy and economics; mathematics—general math. Algebra I and II, plane and solid geometry, trigonometry; science—general science, biology, chemistry, physics; foreign language—Spanish I and II. Typing I and II, Shorthand I and II, bookkeeping and business law and arithmetic are included in the ever-expanding and enriched commercial department. These vocational subjects provide adequate secretarial courses for those who are preparing for this field. Other vocational subjects, which may be taken two years, are home economics, agriculture, shop, and industrial arts. The diversified occupation program, offering a wide variety of courses to be taken in conjunction with on-the-job training in school, is controlled and supervised by the government. Any occupational field in town which deals with training in the productive skills, such as banking, nursing, technicians, commercial work, textiles, selling, and beauticians, may be enrolled in by the students. Journalism is also offered one year. Band, physical education, and chorus are offered as minors each year. Office and library are offered to interested students who meet certain requirements. All minors carry half-credit. Sixteen major units and two minor units are required of a student for graduation. Fi fe ENGLISH DEPARTMENT—Mrs. Anne Askew, Mrs. Annie P. Our Goal: Graduation HtS is the goal tor all of us—seniors, juniors, sophomores, freshmen alike. This is what we have been working toward and dreaming of for twelve years. And now it's here—that wonderful night, the night of our graduation. The sky above us is dark, sprinkled with a thousand twinkling stars seeming to share in our excitement as we stand waiting outside the gate. Then we hear it, our cue—the strains of “Pomp and Circumstance.” Our hearts swell with pride as we slowly march down to our places, but our eyes are misting, too. As we take our seats, our thoughts begin to drift back through our years in high school. Do you remember how we struggled through physics problems, trying to resolve forces, or the day our experiment exploded in chemistry? Oh, yes, let’s not forget “Macbeth —“Hear it not, Duncan, for it is a knell that summons thee to heaven or to hell. Then, there were the algebra problems, and our trying to figure out what x and y were equal to, or geometry and trying to prove that a certain triangle had two equal sides, when all we could see was that they looked equal. What about trying to remember dates in history? Let’s see, when was the Magna Carta signed? Then, there was typing. That little finger just never would strike the right key. Then, there was shorthand—is an n a curve up or down? We remember the frogs in biology, how tedious it was to try to separate the heart from the aorta without destroying either. However, all was not study. We recall the dramatizations in English when we used our little sisters’ skirts for kilts—or our heated political discussions in history during the presidential campaign. What about the time we made our own hats in home-ec? Could we ever come up with some unique creations! Our minds snap back to reality when we hear our name called. Our time has come, the time to walk forward to receive our diploma—the time to stand on the threshold a while before launching our new life. Fourteen Class History e. the class of '61. have indeed had a wonderful year—wonderful in every way. It was the perfect climax to twelve years that we will someday look back upon as the best years of our lives. We began these years when we enrolled as first graders in the Alexander City Elementary, the Russell, and the Avondale schools. We were known to cur teachers as the “five-year-olds” because that year, and only that year, the age limit for school enrollment was changed. The grammar school and junior high school years were care-free, fun-filled years which helped to provide a solid foundation for future years. Our knowledge and confidence steadily increased as we advanced through each grade. In the fall of 1957 we entered B.R.H.S. as the largest Freshman Class in the school’s history with 255 members. Our classmates were always leaders and participants in all school activities. During our junior year we had a highly successful magazine sale, as we sold more subscriptions than any other class ever had. Other significant events that year were buying our class rings and entertaining the seniors at the junior-Senior Prom which was held in the school gym. And finally we became seniors. We were still the same hard-working, fun-loving students that we were before but a bit more dignified, having grown more aware of our responsibilities then and in the future. Our class had several ’firsts”—the largest senior class in the history of B.R.H.S., and the first class to hold a coronation society for Homecoming Queen. We were especially proud of our football team, which boasted the first undefeated season in seven years and won the Confederate Conference Championship. Then there were many activities which we can always recall with fond memories in years to come. Seme of these were the football banquet, football dances, the basketball banquet, the junior-Senior Prom, and the senior banquet. As that wonderful year drew to a close, we remembered how we had studied, worked, and enjoyed many good times. We had cheered our teams to victory and felt sympathy for any misfortune of a fellow classmate. Finally we arrived at that all-important occasion—graduation—an end, not only to our senior year but to our high school days. But in another sense, it was a beginning—a beginning in which we all started on our separate paths, holding forever the memory of that wonderful year. —SUSU HUNTER, Historian Seniors CLASS OFFICERS Ronnie Talley_______________________________________ President Larry Blankenship _____________________________ Vice-president Teena Butler_________________________________________ Secretary Paulette Freeman--------------------------------------Treasurer Freddie Hunter Social Committee Chairman (first row) — Nicky Abbctt — Football manager 59, Letter Club ’59, Who’s Who 61. (Not Shown: Jennie Morrison and Linda Vann) Twenty six CL Cl 3 A P em As freshmen we began our climb Up the ladder cf education. Our childhood ways were left behind. And we made our dedication Of heart and mind and spirit and soul To the cause of higher learning. And we each strived to reach our goal. The spirit in us burning. As sophomores then to school we came. And we climbed up one step higher. We learned to love cur dear school’s name And the standards set up by her. We showed our spirit with each emotion, And before the year passed by, We all gave our heart’s devotion To Benjamin Russell High. As juniors then we tock a step And had a time so dear. Filled with fun and packed with pep. We enjoyed ourselves that year. The dances, the parties, the dates, and the prom. Time we spent so happily. Things that can never be taken from Our treasure of memories. As seniors now we stand on top. The ladder has been climbed. But here we should and must not stop For before us all we find The ’’Ladder of Life before us stands, And like the one before, We’ll take each step until we land On top of the ladder once more. —JIMMY MANN, Class Poet T wenty-seven Juniors Audrey Adamson, Janet Adamson, Freddie Allen, Lavelle Austin, Judy Bailey, Darrell Baker. Thirty-two Testing Program A GOOD basic testing program is provided for BRHS students, with one of the major tests being the State Testing Program. The program includes the use of the California Test of Mental Maturity and the California Achievement Test. According to law the test results are to be used in identifying students who have outstanding aptitudes and abilities for the purpose of promoting the fullest realization of their potentialities. Other tests administered to BRHS students include the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test, The American College Test, the College Entrance Examination Board Scholastic and Achievement Test and the Navy College Aptitude Test. The Alabama State Employment Service also renders guidance help to our school. The Employment Service administers a General Aptitude Test, a battery of twelve tests, to all high school seniors. Following administration of the test, each testee is given an individual interview, during which the test results are interpreted. One of the fundamental principles of the American dream is that every student should have the opportunity to make the most of his or her talents The testing program at BRHS is working toward the fulfillment of this dream by helping each student understand his potentialities and limitations in the fields of scholastic achievement, vocational aptitude and mental maturity. ♦ -------- ♦----------♦ Thirty-three Sophomores CLASS OFFICERS William Abbett, Barbara Aldredge, Dale Anderson, Linda Anthony, Billy Paul Austin, Sherry Bailey. (For identification, see Club Directory—Page 61) Fifty-five The BRHS BAND The Benjamin Russell High School band, under the direction of Ralph White, makes a valuable contribution to the entire school program. On those crisp fall nights when the football team takes the field, the marching band presents spectacular half-time shows. No Veterans' Day or Christmas program could be complete without its delightful and inspiring music. Highlight of the band’s activities is its annual Spring Concert, and one of its most popular performances is its informal lawn concert, held on the terrace in front of the school when the school year is almost over and there is more than just a hint of spring in the air. (Upper) Susu Hunter, Nell Askew, Linda McEachern. With their usual vim and vigor the BRHS cheerleaders inspired the football team on to an undefeated season in That Wonderful Year: 1960-61. In addition to cheering at these games, Karen. Nell, Susu, Beverly, Jo Ann, Linda and Nell S. planned the Friday afternoon pep rallies, held victory and homecoming dances, decorated for the football games, for dances and for homecoming, and planned the home-coming bonfire. After football season had ended, they led the yells at all the home basketball games, collected money for the March of Dimes, and helped to keep the school spirit high—win. lose or tie. Without these cheerful seven, life at BRHS might sometimes have become very dull. The ECHO salutes the cheerleaders for the work that they and their sponsor, Mrs. Young, have done for the school! The BRHS offense scored quickly and the defense maintained a steadfast forewall. The visiting Tigers were shut-out by the determined home team 19-0. Wetumpka (Sept. 16) Eeneath the bleak, cold torrents of Hurricane Ethel and on a field covered with no less than six inches of water and mud. BRHS sloshed out its second victory. The 'Cats went after victory, and it became theirs. When the last gun had sounded, the score stood BRHS 6, Wetumpka 0. Lanett (Sept. 23) For the first time in seven years, the BRHS Wildcats were victorious over the Lanett Panthers. With victory on their minds and revenge in their hearts, the visiting 'Cats romped impressively over the battling Panthers. For three outings, Alex City had remained unbeaten and unscored on. The score: BRHS 26, Lanett 0. Opelika (Sept. 30) The Opelika Bulldogs were no match for the mighty Wildcats and fell as fourth foe to be downed by BRHS. The 'Cats made short work of the ’Dogs and the score was 20-0 at half-time. With Alex City Cubs playing most of the second half, Opelika managed to be the first team to score on BRHS. But this was to no avail, and the Bulldogs were beaten 26-7. Sylacauga (Oct. 7) Two unbeaten rivals, BRHS and Sylacauga. met in a desperate battle trying to end the other’s winning streak. The Aggies and the ’Cats battled hard, but in the end they were too evenly matched. With the final gun, both teams remained unbeaten. After the toughest battle of the year, the score stood 0 to 0. Auburn (Oct. 14) In the sixth game of the season, BRHS again hung up the victory flag, with the tigers of Auburn High bowing before the Wildcats. It was the first meeting of the two teams, and the ’Cats were prepared to start the series off right. They did just that as they downed an inspired Auburn team by a score of 33-6. Valley of Fairfax (Oct. 21 ) Once again BRHS went onto the field seeking both victory and revenge. Winning was the order of the day as the Wildcats downed the Rams of Valley High at the Ram homecoming. Valley was inspired and fought fast and furiously, but they were overpowered by the determined Wildcats. Revenge for last year's Ram victory at the BRHS homecoming was taken as the Wildcats won 20-12. B. B. Comer (Oct. 28) The BRHS homecoming game with B. B. Comer of Sylacauga seemed at first to be a disaster, for at half-time the 'Cats were trailing the Tigers 6 to 0. But the Wildcats never gave up and came back in the second half with the togetherness and determination that made them champions. During the second half Alex City romped headlong over the Tigers holding them to a minus fifteen yards rushing and no points. After a terrific Wildcat comeback, the game ended with this score: BRHS 33, B. B. Comer 6. Dadeville (Nov. 4) With an undefeated season in view, BRHS played host to its arch rival, the Dadeville Tigers, in a hard fought contest. Dadeville always seems to play its best and most inspired game against Alex City, and this year was no exception. But there was no stopping the Wildcats. The strong and battling Dadeville Tigers were beaten by the BRHS team 21 to 6. Tallassee (Nov. 1 1 ) The Tallassee game served as a grand finale to an undefeated season. With fire in their eyes and desire in their hearts, the 'Cats were determined to end the season unbeaten. The Tallassee Tigers fought hard, but the Wildcats were too strong and determined to win. With this victory, Alex City remained unbeaten and became Champion of the Confederate Conference. The score: BRHS 12, Tallassee 0. Seventy-three Varsity Players Varsity Basketball Team Keene Reese. There goes Marion Britton, teacher at BRHS, falling down the stairs again. — Jennie Bass, Prophet ♦ --------- ♦ -------- ♦ One Hundred Twelve During THAT WONDERFUL YEAR the Cinder reported the students' choice of — Tom Wolsoncroft, a BRHS senior, was named Boy of the Year” in a poll taken of the entire student body. For four years Tom has been outstanding in his school work. He is a member of the Key Club and the Beta Club, of which he is president. Tom's interests include the BRHS band in which he plays first trumpet. He is also a member of the dance band. In the field of athletics he has lettered in football and basketball. Besides his school activities, he is a very active member of the Order of the Arrow. At present he serves as vice-president of the Tukabatchee Area Council, O.A. Last summer he attended the National Boy Scout Jamboree as a staff member. Tom is a member of the First Methodist Church, where he serves as chairman of the Junior Board of Stewards. With all these activities Tom still finds time to help other people in any way he can and to finish any task he undertakes. Barbara Blair, one of the most devoted Student Council presidents ever to serve at BRHS, was named “Girl of the Year. Through her hard work and patience the Council this year progressed to its rightful position as one of the best councils in the state. Barbara's success in her Student Council activities has not effected her personality one bit. She is still the same friendly girl who entered BRHS four years ago. Hard work seems to be one of Barbara’s trademarks, and she has done considerable work in FTA and on the Cinder and Echo staff projects. Barbara also was elected as Freshman Echo Maid in 1958. Besides her many school activities Barbara was Tallapoosa County Chairman in the Teens-Against-Polio drive this year. She is also a member of the Orr Street Baptist Church, where she is active in both Sunday School and Training Union Activities. One Hundred Thirteen remem that wonderful year with its Grateful Moments of Appreciation when we acknowledge the debt we owe our many patrons for their wonderful spirit of cooperation. As That Wonderful Year draws to a close, the students of the Benjamin Russell High School remember with appreciation the interest shown in their Welfare by the people of Alexander City. They will always be grateful • • • to the Lions' Club for sponsoring the band and for making it possible for the BRHS band to be the best equipped and trained in the state. • • • to the Chamber of Commerce's members who participated in the Cooperative Merchants Plan for financing the ECHO and Cinder and to the wholesale merchants who also helped with the publication’s financing. • • • to the Quarterback Club for its support of the athletic program. • • • to the Kiwanis Club for its sponsorship of the Key Club. • • • to the American Legion for assisting wih the Veterans’ Day program • • • to The Outlook for its interest in and help with the publication of the CINDER and the ECHO. • • • to the Robert Craves Studio for making the plans of the Echo staff become reality through its excellent pictures. • • • to the citizens of Alexander City who voted a IV2 mill property tax as additional aid to the city school program.
