Dedication In Memory of A Former Classmate Barbara Yales As I lie upon my bed And gaze at the lovely sky above, Oh, how wonderful it is, I think. To know that God is love And to know that He dwells yonder Far above that azure blue. Where Stan and his mighty forces Can never harm the good and true. If we live humble and faithful To the way, the truth and life If we follow in Jesus’ footsteps Live without sinning and without strife, The reward is joy and life everlasting, If the precious comforter abide within But to those who go on sinning, Death and hell is their only win. He plainly tells us to be watching, And the time is surely ftigh When we see the Lord appearing. With His angels in the sky. Oh, dear ones, won’t you take warning, Hell’s an awful place to be. For the rich man there lifting his eyes Don’t you remember what a plea? Requesting of Lazarus in Abraham’s bosom, To warn his kindred to flee that lake For he had made a terrible mistake When you make your own decision Which one, dear friend, will it be? Will it be detruction forever, Or to dwell with the pure and free? Pray to God for sweet deliverance From a part of sin and strife. And go to live with the King forever. Where there’s joy and eternal life. -Written by BARBARA YATES Shirley Blair: “To be efficient in a quiet way is her aim every day. Beta Club—'56. Student Council—'55 '56. FHA—'55 '56. For here was not the great big world But only stood the door. A house to build with knowledge filled And we barely had a floor. Is Sophomores, books became our friends But some still had a why.” Plane Geometry, we quickly learned Did not teach how to fly. Math was hard, we said again But learning we did need. And so our boat began to float, And slowly picked up speed. As Juniors, we felt the world close by And tried a little harder The oil was burned and so we learned And went a little farther. Our road toward life still had it's curves That how well we knew. Our books we took and gave a look And soon the year was through. s Seniors, we are almost through But we've learned the fatal truth, 7 hat in this life of greatest strife We still are but the youth. For knowledge cannot be learned By book and book alone. In time’s own day to find our way And its pages then to roam. Alma Mater Dear ole high school we love her, Our ideal and pride, We will hold up her standards, What ever may be tide, We will hold up her standards, Flung out to the sky, We will give our hearts devotion, To ole A.C. High. Class Prophecy Looking into the future we see a bright year 1966—Look, there is a poster announcing the debut of Charles Mask’s hillbilly five with Donald Pritchard and Lynn Royal, banjoists, John Queen and Bernard Speaks, fiddlers; and George Vernon, pianist. The graduating class of ’56 was overwhelmed to learn that one of its members, Gene Poole, has become the first person to lead a successful expedition to the moon. Among Gene’s crew were Troy Smith, co-pilot; Donnie Smith, navigator; Lowell Young, radio technician, and Mac Wayne Speaks, gunner. Professor Melvin Towns of Oxford University, a well known scientist, also accompanied the group with his assistant, Zeila Warren. It is hoped that nature will soon supply the human race with another mind as capable as Gene Poole’s, but this time we hope they take enough fuel to return home on Entering our favorite night club, we are met at the door by Janet Massey, cigarette girl. We are waited on by Howard Sharpe, head waiter. We give strict specifications to Gary Turner, head chief, as to how we want our steaks. The lights dim and the floor show begins. We recognized Peggy Jones, Frances Smith, Cathryn Hodge, Sue Mann, and Jimmy Laura Johnston, who are featured in the chorus. A fan fare announces the appearance of the stars Doris “Bubbles” Miller, and Diane “Tootsie” Ray. The floor show is great and happily we trod homeward. Harold Gillespie has his own popcorn and peanut stand located under the bleachers of the BRHS gym. Harold, has asked Marion Neighbors, now owner of Askin’s Drug Store, and Kermit Pike, owner of Carlisle’s Drug Store, to join him as partners in his business. Billy Waites, now lieutenant of detectives, and his assistant, Buel Parker, have just solved a mystery case. Glenn Wilson, has won the Indianapolis 500 for the past four years. Turning now to the sports page we read that “Killer” O. T. Eason and Murderous” Gene Scott are meeting tonight in Madison Square Garden to determine the world’s champion heavyweight wrestler. “Killer” Eason is favored in this championship battle. The P-TA met last week and elected Barbara Bradberry, president; Glenda Steele, vice-president; Frances Jones, secretary-treasurer; and social committee chairman, Wayne Hornsby. New additions to the teaching staff are: Betty Wilbanks, physical education teacher; Jeanette Keel, physics teacher; Arlee Lovelady, typing; Richard Hammock, shorthand; Mary E. Harte, English. Also the new principal, Edsell Mullins, and his secretary, Maylon Love, were approved by the board. Special guests at the meeting were Terry Jones, Superintendent of Education, Bobby Worthy, Truant Officer, President of the Board of Education, George Johnston and lunchroom superintendents, Barbara Germany and Julia McAlister. After the business session was over, the Smith Singers of Broadway, Doris, Judy, June, Dorothy, and Betty gave a musical program Jimmy Ted Lewis, famous men’s world champion tiddley-winks player, has just become engaged to Gwen Veazey, woman’s champion tiddley-winks player. Jimmy Ted and Gwen have decided to give up this strenuous game and retire, for the rest of their lives to Gloria Wright and Cecelia Peter’s Rest Home at Kowaliga. Seward Goss, Jimmy Harris, and Burren McCain have just returned from a big game hunt in wildest Africa. They brought back home some wild monkeys for animal trainers Bobby Coker and Charles McLeod. Lee Mann, professor of speech, Bob Jones, professor of mathematics, and Joe Bob Lambert, professor of journalism at Auburn, have been awarded the Pulitzer prize award for special work in their field of education. The Ladies Aid Committee, Pat Thompson, president, met at the home of Shirley Fuller, vice president, yesterday. The group considered sending Warner Jean Stephens, a missionary, to Siberia. Afterwards, Nellie Jo Taunton, violinist, presented a program of classical music written by Daphne Grimsley. We were grieved to learn of the retirement of our favorite comedienne, June Monroe, from show business. June will be replaced by Jean Segrest, an up and coming entertainer. Speaking of entertaining, we read where, Julia Phurrough, Judy Gooden, and Peggy Wilson, recently appeared in a Broadway production directed by Larry Speaks. Paul Farmer was elected treasurer of the Grand Miser Club at its last meeting. Other officers elected were Billy McGhee, president; Nita Matthews, vice president, and Jeanine McLeod, secretary. Voncille Robinson, (Garett), Faye Lankford (Baker) and Carrie Lee Walls (Cheatem) are candidates for the “Wife of the Year” award. Patricia Porch, flutist, will give a concert at Carnegie Hall next month, Accompanying her will be Evelyn Moore, harpist, Guynette McGuire, piccolo player, and Charlene Turner, pianist. On the way we are stopped by a ragged man and asked to donate five dollars to the home for Punk Coaches. We are startled to realize that this is our old classmate Jimmy Loyd who joined the ranks of punk coaches when his Z formation failed. Finally, at home, we pick up the evening edition of the paper, of which Billy Joe Brown is editor. Turning to the society column we read that Carolyn Brown, one of Alabama’s most gracious ladies, is to entertain Governor Ed Johnson, Supreme Court Justice, Wayne Limbaugh, Ladies Aid Society Chairman, Mary Frank Sorrell, Secretary of State, Johnny Foshee, and his secretary, Carolyn Scott, and the Woman’s Commissioner for Prevention of Cruelty to Wayward Cats and Dogs, Jeanette Saxon, with the biggest party of the year. The party is to be held at the Airport Cafe of which Mr. and Mrs. Allison Blythe (Alice Holloway) are now the owners. Turning the page we read that Robert Davis, designer of the ’66 Thunderbird, donated $10,000,000 to charity. Other news-worthy items we find are the Hugo Denham, and Larry Thomas, have the biggest chicken farm in the country. Charles Daniels, photographer for Modern Screen magazine, is on location with screen star Faye Strickland and her leading man, Jimmy Britton, to do a movie. This production is being directed by John H. Mann, Jr., ten time Academy Award winner. This picture also features music by Bob Gunn and his “Dixieland Be-boppers” with Carl Sansom, drummer; Jerry O’Neil, bass; Arnold Blankenship, trombonist; and C. L. Gregg, vocalist. We also read that Bobby Clackley, once a full-time partner with Liberace, has returned to his Alma Mater as chorus director. Emily Coleman’s art exhibit is now being shown at Art Hall. Bobbie Jo Channell and Sandra Futral were recent candidates for Miss America.
