Mrs. Stuart has been the inspiration for many of her husband’s poems. She has also served as his best critic and “administrator.” rfcttHctUatnatcwt OUR HEARTFELT THANKS TO YOU, MR. EVANS! May 18 was a Red Letter Day for the Russell Public Schools. On that day, the citizens of the Russell School District voted 4 to 1 in favor of a Bond Issue which will provide modern and adequate schools for our students. We are deeply indebted to Superintendent Henry R. Evans for his splendid leadership in presenting the needs of our school to the people. Education has taken a step forward in Russell and a lot of credit is due Mr. Evans who has worked hard and conscientiously in our behalf. We also wish to thank Alfred J. Ward, President of the Board of Education and other board members who have given unselfishly of their time to direct school affairs. Occt OUR CONGRATULATIONS TO YOU, MR. JOHNSON! On your first year as Principal of Russell High School—you have done a swell job—you have generously and wholeheartedly supported all our school activities— you have had patience which we did not often deserve. You have been firm, yet understanding. You have taught us the rules of good sportsmanship and loyalty. We think Russell High School is a better school for your being here. OFFICE ASSISTANTS—Syclne Brown, Jean Ann Fulks, Donna Caudill, Donna Maggard, Dora McClain, Deanna Bullard. LIBRARY ASSISTANTS—Tanya Layne, Mary Wallace, Betty Holbrook, Ruth Holbrook, Ethel Long, Sue Brown, Mamie Dalton. “The needle's eye that does supply The thread that runs so true” I had one criticism to make of my teachers. I had heard a few of them say, “Oh, I’m just another schoolteacher!” This burned me up. I told my teachers never to say this. I told them to walk proudly, with their heads high, and to thank God they had chosen the teaching profession—the mother of all professions; that they were members working in the front line of American democracy, that they were the ground roots and not the brace roots of American democracy. I believed this deep in my heart and brain. That the teaching profession was the greatest profession of them all . . . I told them they could further their education without any more of a struggle than they were having now, if they were ambitious and willing to try; that education was not a commodity to be bought and sold but something that gave one more realization and enjoyment of the many things that life held in store. That with more education, the mysteries and the beauties of life would unfold before them like the buds of leaf and flower in the spring. I told them they would even see more beauty in their natural surroundings than they now saw . . . No wonder! There were only 110 of us. We came from Bellefonte, Flatwoods, West Russell, Russell, and West- wood. Our class sponsors were Miss Yoak and Mrs. Heider. Naturally we elected class officers. Our choices were C. B. Ison, President; Jim McConnell, Vice President; Jesse Blanton, Secretary; and Rita Smith, Treasurer. Ten members of our class- were honored by being accepted in the Beta Club and Rita Smith was chosen Beta Sweetheart. We elected Rita Smith, Barbara Napier, and Jim McConnell as our representatives to the Student Council. Dorothy Holbrook was chosen cheerleader, and several of our boys took in basketball and football. Our girls basketball team won the Round Robin Tournament. At the end of the year we chose Rita Smith and Garland Greene as the Sophomore class favorites. Our struggles as Silly Sophomores were victorious and 76 Jolly Juniors were off to a roaring start under the sponsorship of Mrs. Rose and Miss Washington. The class officers for this year were: Pete Williams, President; Barbara Napier, Vice President; Geneva Osborne, Secretary; Helen Burton, Treasurer. Our Junior Play, “The Skeleton Walks” was greatly enjoyed by everyone. We earned money for our prom by selling candy. Geneva Osborne and Joe Rdbinson were chosen the Junior Class favorites. As the theme for our banquet and prom we chose NEPTUNE’S COURT and decorated in aqua and white. Our banquet and prom were the highlight of the year. Miss Barbara Gallion reigned as Prom. Queen. On a bright September morning in 1953, our 69 sophisticated Seniors gathered in the halls of Russell High School for our last roundup. This year’s class officers are: Neil Hogg, President; Barbara Gallion, Vice President; Rita Smith, Secretary; Harriet Neal and Ron Conley, Co-treasurers. We received our class rings and wore them proudly. One of the dances during the football season was a Sadie Hawkins Day Dance. We had a magazine sale and afterwards enjoyed a wiener roast at the football field. Our Senior Play, “Amazing Grade,” was a big success. We had a Revilonian Dance and Miss Revilonian and Mr. Revilonian were presented with flowers. The Senior boys presented a style and variety show. March 26, we went to Morehead for Senior Day at the college. May 13, we started out for Washington, and happily arrived. We enjoyed the trip very much, but we were also glad to get home again. Naturally, we enjoyed the Junior-Senior Banquet and the Prom. Finally the big day arrived and on May 27, we graduated from Russell High School. The next day, we came back so every one could admire us and we could catch our last glimpse of Russell High School as a SENIOR. P.S.: We also worked hard on the 1954 REVILONIAN and we hope it is the best annual Russell High School ever had. Also, we hope you enjoy it. And so Goodbye. Jane Stuart served us cokes and delicious fudge. Some of our boys forgot to count the number of helpings when it came to eating Mrs. Stuart’s tempting candy. Seated left to right are Barbara Napier, Ron Conley, Rita Smith, Pete Williams, and Wilma Caudill. They are all “eyes and ears” as Mr. Stuart tells of his experiences to other members of our staff. We learn that there is a vast difference in classes today from those of yesterday. Our community is “school conscious” and our classes are made more interesting by good instruction materials, modern school equipment and qualified faculty. We are glad that we can attend classes which teach us our personal responsi- bility for our American heritage. Look girls! Aren’t you sorry you didn’t take ECONOMIC GEOGRAPHY. History is being made in the AMERICAN HISTORY CLASS of Russell High. We wonder what’s cooking in HOME EC CLASS ? ? ? It must be good because everybody seems happy. This doesn’t look like a very large TYPING CLASS because we only see five students. But from the noise we hear there must be more. This group of students in our BOOKKEEPING CLASS seems to be seriously studying. (Ha-Ha) Ho-Hummmmmmmmmm. It’s just STUDY HALL. This brilliant group of PHYSICS students are now seriously (?) discussing the theory of atomic energy. For those of you who cannot translate Latin, LATIN CLASS is trying to tell you to buy a Revilonian. This P.A.D. CLASS looks very serious. But wait ! ! Look at the big grin on Mr. Simpson’s face. SHORTHAND CLASS presents Russell High’s future stenographers and secretaries. fctMMMWWI 0% xciitizcitCc ttd Mrs. Stuart tells our girls how the log cabin in which Jesse Stuart lived as a boy was remodeled and converted into the present home. The modernistic kitchen was once a lean-to. Their table stands before a quaint fireplace and here each morning after breakfast, Jesse Stuart reviews his previous day’s writing with his wife. It is here that they get organized for the day. • • • Seta NUMIS LEE FOUTS Beta Club Sponsor OFFICERS—President, Helen Burton; Vice President, Barbara Napier; Secretary Geneva Osborne; Treasurer, Marilyn Miller. The gym was appropriately decorated to keep with the theme of Neptune’s Court. A huge seashell served as the throne and different colors of lights flashed across the seashell to make this prom one of the most attractive ever known. Pink carnations, the class flower were presented to Queen Barbara and her attendants received mixed nosegays. Roses were sent as a gift to her. The Queen’s attractive Maid-of-Honor was Barbara Napier. The other runners-up. were, left to right: Rita Smith, Sydne Brown, Geneva Osborne and Patricia Stallings. Rita Stallings was the cute little miss who served as crown-bearer. Pete Williams, president of the class, crowned Miss Gallion. They have drilled a large hole into the pole that holds up the sweep to the well. We also learned that Mr. Stuart played four years as right guard in football. He punted and kicked extra points but never could pass a football. His hardest games were played against Russell. FRED JOHNSON and ALEX CILO are the coaches at Russell High School. THE RUSSELL VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT The year 1912 was an eventful year for the city of Russell and it was also a memorable date for the Fire Department. The first water works was installed in Russell. The City bought 300 feet of hose and a horse-drawn two-wheel cart. 1916-1918---1. F. York was a ppointed Fire Chief. 1918-1922---ludge G. W. Whitt served as Chief. 1922-1927 — George T. Washington appointed Fire Chief. The year 1922 also brought progress. The City bought a T-Model Ford Chemical truck. 1927-1939 — W. E. Basenback, Jr. served ably as City Fire Chief for 12 years. In 1929, the City purchased a new fire truck. 1939- 1940 — Sam Hill was appointed to head the firemen. 1940- 1943 — L. C. Story served as Chief. 1943 _ Clyde P. Meadows has been Chief of the Fire Department since 1943. Under his capable leadership, the Russell Fire Department has been rated the second best volunteer Fire Department in the State of Kentucky. Due to this rating, the property owners in Russell pay the lowest rate of insurance available in the United States. In 1952, the City bought another modern fire truck (new Ford F-7) — the biggest Ford truck made. We want to say, Congratulations to Fire Chief Meadows and to all of his men who are doing such a splendid job to protect the citizens of Russell.
