PRESIDING OFFICERS OF THE 1953 COMMENCEMENT EXERCISES FOOTBALL SEASON SUMMARY AND SCHEDULE The 1952 edition of Russell High School Football was a very successful one. This year makes the second consecutive winning season Russell High football teams have enjoyed under the leadership of our able coaches, Alex Cilo and Fred Johnson. This year the Maroon and White annexed five gridiron triumphs while losing three. September found coach Fred Johnson pessimistic about the changes for this years young and inexpe- rienced grid team. It looked like a poor year for the Red Devils. The Maroon and White started the season in setting the pre-season dope by defeating Coal Grove 7 to 6. The second game of the season found the Red Devils extending their winning streak to two straight games with a 34-21 victory over Wurtland. Riding the crest of these victories the Red Devils took on Cattlettsburg. The Wildcats, who were one of the strongest grid elevens in the tri-state massacred the Devils 47 to 6. Johnson's boys bounced back the following week by fighting McKell 14 to 0. The next week found West Liberty humbling the Maroon and White team 41 to 6. Russell won the big one by beating Raceland 7 to 6. The Maroon received the kickoff and marched 70 yards to score with Larry Menshouse carrying the ball. C. B. Ison going off left tackle for all important point of the game. The Ramblers scored late in the fourth quarter but the extra point was smothered in the dust. The brilliant air attack of Lousia and penalties against Russell helped Lousia defeat the Red Devils 18 to 0. Russell ended its campaign with a 32 to 7 victory over Greenup. This victory gave Russell the Greenup County Championship. Five boys have played their last game for the Maroon and White, including all N E K C. Bob Bennett and Don Jones. Other graduating Seniors are: Gordon McIntosh, Larry Menshouse, Tom Swann and Arvil Menshouse. OUR COACHES + L. S7 4 50 59 58 62 SvJPI - fv £ «' - 71 P ?
