I am proud of you and my good -wishes go with you for a beautiful life of enjoyment and service. In a sense, you are really my first class because twelve years ago you were entering the first grade and I became your educational administrator. I know not how long this period has seemed to you, but to me it was only a few yesterdays ago. Now you have grown into men and women of stature and wisdom, and as citizens of our school you have demonstrated a pattern of responsible citizenship which I hope you will carry throughout your life. Today, more than ever before, I am proud of this association and the opportunities for service that have been extended to me. Superintendent CONGRATULATIONS, SENIORS! This is your day—you are climaxing hour years of high school with your many Commencement activities. Your Commencement means a new beginning. Your class motto is indeed apropos to your graduation: You have not finished, just begun. You are leaving the friendly atmosphere of high school to go out into an uncertain future. You will have to make plans and decisions during the years just ahead which will have far-reaching effects upon your lives. I hope that Russell High School has success and happiness. HENRY R. PLACE: Russell High School EVENT: First year of High School for 96 frightened but brave Sophomores. It took us a few days to get acquainted, but after that we were just like one big happy family. The year began with the election of class officers. President, Sam Hoffman; Vice President, Jim Grizzle; Secretary-Treasurer, Bob Redden. Six of our members were accepted in the Beta Club and Marilyn Rigg had the honor of being Beta Sweetheart. We elected Marilyn Rigg, Patty Cox, and Joe May as our representatives to the Student Council. Our class took a great interest in the extra curricular activities. Quite a few of our boys played Basketball and Football. Marilyn Rigg and Dorothy Wyant were elected as our Cheerleaders. Toward the end of the year we chose Jeralyn Ellison as Miss Sophomore. SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS TIME MARCHES ON TIME: A day in September in the year 1950 PLACE: Again dear old R. H. S. EVENT: 81 Jolly Juniors are off to a roaring start. Nowisagain time toelect officers. President, Sam Hoffman; Vice President, Dean Perkins; Secretary, Phyllis Menshouse; Treasurer, Bob Harris. Work began at once on the Junior Play which was entitled Damsels in Distress. The play was a big hit. In this same year, Patty Cox was elected Vice President of the Tri-State Beta Club. She was also chosen as Miss Junior. Our next worry was the Junior-Senior Banquet and Prom. It took a lot of planning and a lot of work, but they both proved to be a big success. Sharing the honor of Prom Queen were twin sisters, Monnie and Bonnie Stevens. The theme of the Prom was Somewhere Over the Rainbow and the gym looked like something out of this world. AND ON TIME: Our last September morn at Russell High School. PLACE: The old Alma Mater. EVENT: 66 Sophisticated Seniors are on their last roundup. The officers this year are: President, Sam Hoffman; Vice President, Howard Slusher; Secretary, Gene Carr; Treasurer, Joe May. Towards the first of the year we had a magazine sale. The losers treated the winners by having a party in the gym and everyone agreed that it was a success. As we are writing this we are looking forward to our trips which we all take at the end of the school year. Our plans include a trip to Morehead College, Washington D.C., Senior picnic, and the big, big, events of the year, the Senior Play and the Junior-Senior Banquet and Prom which we hear is really going to be wonderful. With all these events yet to come and the future that lies before us; we can be sure that our class motto is true when it tells us that we are NOT FINISHED, JUST BEGUN . . . . Home Economics Future husbands of these girls won't have to worry about their nutritious meals. Any girl passing Mrs. Wilcox’s cooking class comes well recommended, Boys! Shop Girls, before choosing a husband, look over this crew! (not the intruders in the doorway!) These boys would make ideal mates as they could make all your furniture and keep it repaired too. Mr. Johnson is the popular instructor. These students seem to be absorbed in their work. We wonder if it is for the benefit of Mrs. Wade or the Camerman? Bookkeeping Cibrary There is always plenty of help available at the library desk. The librarians are Diane Williams. Shirley Gillum, Tanya Layne, and Carolyn Austin. Mr. Evans, give us your opinion on this. Meta Club The Beta Club is one of the most active organizations in our school; just look at the smiling faces in this group! Could it be that little black and gold pin which they are wearing or are they remembering that never-to-be forgotten Beta Convention. Their skit, The Unknown Soldier Speaks , brought forth much praise and lovely compliments from those present on Convention floor. Our own Patty Cox presided with poise and dignity in her office of State Vice President. Who could ever forget our Sweetheart Ball on Valentine's Day or our special Victory Ball honoring our Red Devils. Jim Andy Caudill's orchestra furnished the Rhythm. Ah! Moonlight and music! Many worth-while projects have been carried out by the Betas. They have a scholarship fund for worthy students who want to attend college and they have carried on a successful public relations program by presenting their skit before local civic organizations. The Russell Beta Club live up to their motto, LET US LEAD BY SERVING OTHERS . Miss Fouts is the sponsor of this honor group. The theme, SOMEWHERE OVER THE RAINBOW was used throughout with Maestro Brownie Benson on the bandstand, adding his magic to this night of spring fantasy. At nine o'clock, Sam Hoffman, President of the Junior class, crowned Monnie Stevens as our Prom Queen. Monnie’s twin sister, Bonnie, took the place of Maid of Honor. The queen's lovely attendants were: Wilma Chapman, Ruth Compton, and Wanona Miles. Mand Majorettes ANNA NOLAN, NANCY RENEGAR, WANONA MILES, RUTH COMPTON, RITA SMITH The Glee Club and Mixed Chorus are very popular organizations throughout our school and community. Miss Fuller, our director, has worked with untiring efforts to train the voices which have won the praise of all who have heard the Russell High School's Glee Club and Mixed Chorus. Through rain and snow, heat and cold, our coaches never gave up. They worked with the Red Devils to the best of their ability to have results that will never be forgotten. In our opinion there are none better able to lead a squad through endless drills, practice, and-VICTORY------than our own coaches Johnson and Cilo. So, CONGRATULATIONS, COACHES! A Salute to the Maroon The 1951 edition of the Russell Maroon was, without question the best in more chan a decade. After years of disappointing seasons, in which player and fan interest lagged to a new low, the '51 team of 13 iron men revived the sport in the Rail City to dizzy heights. The good folks of Russell are mighty proud of this team and their coaches, Fred Johnson and AlexCilo. The Maroon was really a team, with splendid cooperation and coordination of efforts in every game in which they participated. Behind the success of the Maroon is a story. It is a story of fourteen determined boys, many of whom were to play their last year of football. At the start of the season, they buckled down toseveral weeks of monotonous practice sessions. The drills were held twice a day, usually in the afternoon under a blazing sun. The spirit of the boys was excellent; their morale was high and they had a fierce determination to win. These factors always contribute to a winn- ing team. Prior to the season's opening, the team morale was given another boost by the elec- tion of Sam Hoffman and Joe May as Co-Captains. When the season did open, the Maroon squad was in the proverbial pink of physical condition and the mental attitude of the individual players was much over par. The members of the squad had a sneaking suspicion they were going places when they defeated an Ironton High School Tiger eleven 14-0 in an abbreviated game. Russell was slapping away at the goal posts for a third touchdown when time took a dash-out on them. The toughest game for the Maroon was, without question, the Catlettsburg Wildcat contest, in which Russell scored a well-earned and hard-fought 14-0 victory. In this contest the Maroon lost a third touchdown on a penalty. Once over the tough Wildcat hurdle, the team reached a confident stage. The boys trained hard and practiced equally hard in preparation for their games coming up for the weekend. Joy May and Sam Hoffman, as co-leaders of the 1951 team, con- tributed much to its success by smart and alert ball handling. They enjoyed the respect and ad- miration of their teammates. Hoffman and May reciprocated with words of encouragement and praise for the efforts of the men of the squad. In one sense of the word, the Maroon was extremely lucky and fortunate due to the fact that no key men were sidelined for any length of time due to injuries. Their fine physical condition was a tellingfactor in theMcKellgame which the Maroon won at Fullerton, 31-0. They took the terrific heat in stride and administered a terrific beating to the hefty McKell eleven. Here's several other things that made 'em tick and become one of the greatest teams in the history of Russell High School. The backs ran hard and drove furiously. The line charging was fast and furious. The blocking, especially downfield, was beautiful and a sight to behold. Perhaps, eleven men for eleven men, there was not a team in Eastern Ken- tucky or Southern Ohio that could beat the 1951 Maroon edition. So here's a salute to Co-Captains Joe May and Sam Hoffman and the great Maroon team, reading from right to left; Jack Howell, Bob Bennett, Bob Harris, Pat Caniff, Daryl Moore, Bob McKenzie, Jim Downs, Jim Kouns, Bill Burgess, Bob Copley, C.B. Ison, Don Jones, Darwin May, Joe Robinson, Bill Callihan, Johnny Millis, Bennett Lyons, Howard Slusher, Larry Menshouse, and Gordon McIntosh. Combined with fair play, sportsmanship, great offensive and defensive ability, the 1951 foot- ball team will always be remembered as a never-to-be-forgotten team in athletics at Russell. Twas a splendid season and it was a splendid group of boys who formed a splendid team. They proved in the clinch what any coach would be proud of--a win- ning team! Although they did not have an undefeated record, they had a record of which any team would be proud. We, the fans of R.H. S., are as proud of them as if theirs had been un- defeated. They showed their courage, stamina, and capable ball-handling continously throughout the season.
