Rreorgatniizsitiion The Russell Independent School became a part of the new Russell Com- munity School Iuly 1, 1958. Many changes were necessary so that school could start September l. The major changes were the moving of three rural buildings, converting the shop and bus garage into three temporary class- rooms and the building of a new classroom across the east of the study- hall. Enlargement ofthe hot lunchroom and new tables, desks and science equipment completed most of the emergency changes that were made. Congratulations are in order to the 1959 graduating class at they are the first students to graduate from the recently reorganized Russell Community School. The Freshman class has the distinction of being the largest class in recent years to attend high school in Russell and it is the hopes of many people in this district that there will be many more high school classes at least as large as this Freshman class. Our record, 16 wins and 3 defeats illustrates the Zippy spirit demonstrated by the girls this season. Coached by Mr. Arnold the girls came through with the best record in history of girls' basketball at Russell. We wish to express thanks to our manager Frankie Reed and our two chaperons, Mrs. Arnold, and Miss Evans, who served at away and home ball games respectively. For the first time in C. V. C. tournament history, we girls won the first place trophy. After defeating Derby in the first game we topped Osceola 70-59 to become the champs. Our girls dem- onstrated their offensive ability in this clash and against the Bussey girls. Our defense held the Attica team to 7 free throws and no field goals in the last game of regular play. Following the thrill - packed victory over Liberty Center, we girls advanced to the sectional finals. We won the second place Sectional Trophy following our clash with the Lacona squad. Another first in Russell's history occurred when Jeanette Dillman advanced from sectional free throw finals into district competition. We are looking forward to another Successful season with the help of the five squad members who will be back next year. xwinn ers in CQ C0 Tourney arc MC1TOSC X XXX YY- ,,5'-Z-?7f ,-7 X X XX x X X fvx 5- + Boys' Basketball FRONT ROW: Mr. Arnold, B111 Parks, jerry Dlllman, Doyle DeBok, Donald Relph, Bill Shlrer, Allen Sellers. These were just a few of the cheers that could be heard as our basketball boys started their season this year. They were engaged in seasonal games as follows: We They Allerton 36 47 Attica 46 41 Humeston 61 15 Derby 48 45 Lovilia 43 24 Melrose 51 60 Moravia 37 62 Derby 59 35 Bussey 62 36 Garden Grove 54 2 9 Cambria 52 35 Allerton 45 57 Humeston 70 43 Derby 52 43 Melrose 53 60 Lovilia 80 36 Blakesburg 47 49 Attica 57 34 Melrose 45 59 On January 13th, we traveled to Melrose to the C. V. C. Tournament. We opened in the tournament against Derby. After emerging victorious by a score of 52 to 43, we advanced to the finals against a tough Melrose five. Here we were defeated 53 to 60, but still received a nice runner-up trophy. During the season, our boys made a total of 998 points, while our opponents made 810 points. Also, on the court, we made 322, of our shots: holding our opponents to only 281, of their shots. We wish to thank, first of all, our manager, John Ver Steeg, and Mr. Arnold, whose excellent coaching in teamwork and sportsmanship, helped us to establish a fine season's record of 12 wins against 6 defeats. We were scheduled to go to the State Sectional Tournament at Albia on February 14th. We downed Cincinnati 50 to 41. In the semifinals we beat Bussey 52 to 31. Then in the finals we lost a thriller, for the fourth time this year, to Melrose 39 to 40. l E J 16' if Fall Softball FRONT ROW: Marilyn McKay, Mildred McKay, Lauritta Cochran, Carolyn McVey, Connie MIDDLE ROW: BACK ROW: Sellers, Karen Willits, Verdella Slbert, Karen Chapman. Our girls proved their abil- ity on the diamond by defeating the Garden Grove team 25-23, in the opening game of the season. Due to rainy and cold weather, this was the only pre-tournament game the girls played. Our team clashed with the Cincinnati ball club at Blakesburg in the sectional tournament, September 20. Our girls played a good game but came out on the short end of the score, 6-4. The six senior squad members will be missed when playing re- sumes, but our girls have bright hopes for another successful sea- son. TEAM WE THEY Garden Grove 25 23 Cincinnati 4 6 S. S.
