W ff .n I Big Department Big Plans Versatile', is scarcely an elastic-enough word to describe the eight-member Eng- lish Department. Offering over 21 courses, the department is the second largest area of study in the curriculum at Ruskin. The instructors teach a variety of courses from Basic English to American Humorists. Department members attended a dis- trict wide workshop and were introduced to new writing techniques by Dr. Ben Nelms, professor at University of Missouri at Columbia. Miss Mary Haney, yearbook adviser, stated I think the semester classes are really too short for a course that involves intensive Study, Miss Fran Libra, who joined the staff last spring from M.U., added, I don,t think the school system has enough of the 'basics,, there should be and English class for each year of study. Mrs. Jean Gelsinger, departmental head, voices her opinions in this quote by Mark Twain: When we remember we are all mad, the mysteries disappear and life stands explainedf' Although the English Department ex- pects perfection in their casts of hundreds, there are moments of alight-hearted hu- mor, as Miss Benny Searcy jests, I believe that on a range from one to ten the Eng- lish Department ranks a strong nine on the Richtor Scale of lnsanityf, 1 Mrs. Crawford catches up on paper work. 2 Miss Searcy gets a kick out of English. 3 Miss Belden, are your parents really Mr. and Mrs. John Doe? 4 Mr. Abram indulges in after-school studies. 5 Mrs. Gelsinger recites her lesson for the day. 6 Miss Haney crops pictures to make the yearbook deadline. 7 Miss Rose starts the day with a 'lColgatc smile. 8 A happy begin- ning for Miss Libra. The Math Department continued to ex- pand as Algebra teacher Mr. James Lloyd took on a Geometry class. Previously Geo metry was taught exclusively by Mr. Max Hoskin. Algebra I enrollment increased as one more class was added for a total of . six. Mr. Ernest Hester, department coordi- nator, said, Students are becoming more involved in math, and are becoming more interested in careers it may lead to. As science career opportunities increas- ed, students saw reason to enroll in such classes as Biology, Physics, and Chemistry. Mr. Charles Maupin headed the relatively small Science Department and commented We haven't gone to mini-courses, semes- ter courses, like many of the departments have.
