Ten I ratings were won by Ruskin groups and soloists, including all large conducted groups as well as ensembles, at the district event at Warrensburg last year. The mixed chorus, boys' glee club, girls' glee club, and band were all awarded top ratings, and the girls' sextet, clarinet trio, and tour soloists were rated high. Although the band was not certified to the state contest, the other conducted groups camethroughtowin first ratings at Columbia a month later. The girls' sextet and two solo entries werealso awardedI's, and the clarinet trio and two other soloists received superior ratings. h In addition to contest competition, the department presents programs from time to time durin the school year. The Christmas vesper service, a traditional program presented by the 9 mixed chorus and soloists, included this year a new cantata, This Is Noel, by Katherine K. Davis. Another traditional event isan early spring program, which was inaugurated four years ago with a cantata presented by the concert choir, and reached a climax this spring with a pertormanace of Beethoven's Mass in C, sung by the mixed chorus and community par- ticipants and accompanied by the Central Missouri State College orchestra. Band activitiesthis year included a winter concert and a band clinic, held at Grand- view, in which instrumentalists from each school in the conference participated. 41 r E I 'iii' ll , hy: f ff 1, w 12. ,X wi Q , J V , QP I , .W 1 K 1 I J n MWV, y 'ff ,f 4. RUSKIN MAINTAINS HIGH SCHOLASTIC STANDARDS Although many school memories are of parties, programs, and other extracurric- ular activities, class work takes up the largest part of the student's time. Standards of excellence at Ruskin have been held at a high level. Subjects offered include vocational as well as academic classes . Home economics students learn theories of family living and home management in addition to basic prin- ciples of cooking and sewing, careers in homemaking are encouraged . The commer- cial department teaches bookkeeping and office procedure and does extensive mim- eograph work, besides developing short- hand and typing skills. After graduation, many students secure pleasant, well-paid office positions. From junior high through high school, however, the majority of courses taken are academic ones. Preparation for college work- is emphasized, and numbers of stu- dents go on to successful college careers . Miss Hale explains a problem to advanced math class.
