Today, however, school not only teaches basic academic subjects, but offers a variety of programs to train students for careers after graduation and many clubs for stu- dents to become involved with, as a get-away from routine classwork. Anyone who has completed required business courses can apply to join the Intensive Lab program during their sen- ior year. After a semester in the lab, many receive actual on-the-job training, through the Cooperative Education Pro- gram. QC.O.E.l The Vocational Agricul- tural classes offer another training pro- gram in which students participate in judging soil, livestock, crops, and dairy. The class plants and harvests its own crops each year. Industrial Education gives many students an insight into vari- ous jobs concerning architecture, build- ing, and machinery. Homemaking classes also prepare the student for life vocations without college study. Cadet teaching gives students a chance for everyday experiences of teaching. Some of the seniors who have all of their credits can work half-day and go to school the other half. This enables them to earn money for college or fur- ther their training on the job. The numerous clubs at school give the student a chance to get away from the daily classroom trauma and partici- pate in activities that especially interest him, from service work to public speak- ing, history to foreign language. Rated Martinsville came to RCHS and the Lions held them to only 14 points. The school and community got to see the Lions in the final game of the state contest for the first time in RCHS basketball history. Throughout the month, the common Rushvi le fashions were booster jackets, buttons, derbies, bandanas, the school, many homes, cars and most stores were decorated in red and blackp and pep ses- sions full of Mr. Turner leading the Rockin' Round the Clock, Dancing Roger, skits, yells, or Mr. Angle driving a miniature Model-T through the gym became everyday occurrences. After the final game with Marion, an estimated 6000 Un our 3200-capacity gyimzl waited in the gym to welcome bac t e team who brought more pride and excite- ment into the community than Rush County has ever seen. ... f C A. Xb A -A- ,+ r is H E9 as 'Q-J 5 411 Hoosier hysteria swept Rush County, from the season opener when the Lions began their winning streak that was broken only once, to the final game in the state tournament, when Marion slipped by Rushville for the first place title. But the Lions were in no way called the losers, they completed an outstanding 26-2 season, won the first semi-state title in Rush County history, and in the first game at the state came back from 21 points down to eliminate first-ranked East Chicago Washington from the tournament. The team's success was not due to one talented player, but to a whole squad of skilled ballhandlers who spe- cialized in team work. One of these was Rick Goins, the consistently high-scor- ing guard who was nominated to the all-state team and broke the gym record by scoring 45 points in one game. Brad Miley, with his 6'7W', improved as the year progressed till the final tourna- ment, where he awed his opponents with his unmatched rebounding. He was named to honorable mention on the all-state team. Myron Shouse, Neville Cullum, Dennis Goins, Brian Easley and Steve Goddard completed the starters and each pulled the team out of rough spots during the season. Even the TV newscasters and sports- writers who recognized the team could not capture the real spirit of pride that the lions brought to our town: but few people around here will forget the '76 Lions. Many of the photos in our book are by Mr. Ray Hay. Although they are not credited as Mr. Egan's photos, we would like to really thank him for all 9 - 3 'N . -I E 11' the help he has given us. A. Dennis Goins whips in front of an East Chicago Senator during Rushville's comeback from their 21 -points-down handicap in the first state tournament game. E. ln the second match between Richmond and the lions, in the play-off games, this Devil found he could not stop Myron Shouse, or the rest of the team from scoring the first RCHS Semi-State title. F. Brad Miley, the former Speedway Sparkplug, may have been the spark that got the Lions through the East Chicago game, he pulled out 29 rebounds and scored 17 points in the match, and marked up 48 rebounds and 36 points during the two state games. The 1-14 season s the first losing season for Coach k Brown in many years. The reason r the drop was the runners lost rough last year's graduation. The team this year was inexperi- ced. The team was very strong this year, they finished with a 7-2 season and went on to become the sectional champi- ons over Morton Memorial, Connersville and Richmond. In the regional competition, the girls advanced to the final game before they were defeated by a slim two points. The girls' golf team, under the direction of Coach Vicky Kirby, closed out the season with a 2-4 season. They captured second place in a three-way meet at Franklin. lan Kleiman was the low medalist in six out of seven meets. In the fall, many girls participated on the volleyball team. The gymnastics team in its second season was able to schedule 6 meets and for the first time some of the meets were held here in our multi- purpose room. Twelve girls from Miss Kirby's team qualified to compete in the sectional. In their third season of competition, the girls' track team left opponents in a cloud of dust. The expanded season of 11 meets gave the girls a chance to improve in experience. Several of the girls had practiced with the winter track team to begin the season in better shape. Coach Cinda Rice's tennis team began the season welcoming back eight players from the previous year. Because the team was more experienced, they were able to out-do previous season records. The bowling team was somewhat less than active this year, participating in only one meet. However with Coach McDaniel's tips, the girls learned more about the game and enjoyed practicing on the lanes. Eff T ' ,,,,. ,F 'ii v,.,,i . ......-.1-1. When the confus- ing infinitive section came up in gram- mar, many English students found themselves asking this question. The required English courses covered equal parts of grammar and literature, so when students weren't reviewing gram- matical rules they had a chance to read several interesting stories and novels. Some were contemporary books, like Brian Picalo or True Grit along with the old faithfuls like Tom Sawyer and A Sep- arate Peace. World and English literature offered l those interested in reading a further opportunity to analyze writings, while others developed their writing style in creative writing and English compos- ition. The communications courses were favorites among students because they offered a change from the regular class- room drudgery. Students could become actors in the school plays Our Town and The Yankee Doodle, Dl's in the radio classes broadcasts for WRCR, hot-scoop reporters for the Rushlite and Holcad, or brilliant orators in one of the speech classes. ,s 1 Y: . 1..- s 'UV Q: 1 A. Calisthenics and Athletics On a warm, sunny spring day, many students gaze out the windows wishing they were outside playing tennis, golf or baseball, but the students in physical education classes don't have to wish, they are already outside working up a sweat. In P.E., girls get a chance to bowl, square dance, try out their gymnastic skills, play volleyball, basketball, and practice archery. People Behind the Scenes at RCHS We all like working here around all the kids, the cafeteria ladies stated. They have been celebrating the Bicen- tennial by wearing old-fashioned cos- tumes and preparing All-American din- ners forthe occasion. Thanks to the ianitors, all the paper wads, dirty blackboards, and filled was- tebaskets disappear by the morning. An unsung hero of our school is Mrs. VonOhlen. Besides selling supplies, she keeps books for the school, depart- ments, and many other organizations. Mrs. Ricker and Mrs. Cox keep busy in the Clinic. They find that Monday morn- ings seem to be filled with the most aches and pains with the probable cause being the lack of desire to return to school after a fantastic weekend. The year flew by rapidly and the time has come to give someone else a chance to complain about the parking, belt out the choruses of Rushville High, and stand in front of the bookstore all lunch hour.
