All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy ! Had Jack gone to RHS, he would have found many opportunities to play. Parties galore added spice to the school year, and good times were enjoyed by all. Mixers, school dances, club activities, class parties and gang get-togethers provided the means. Teachers had their turn with a good, old-fashioned square dance. Students bop- ped, twisted and mash potato-ed to the lat- est records, while downing cokes at all- school mixers and dances. Service clubs en- tertained children and parents. Slumber-less parties were a popular fad, but all too soon students were at the old grind. fum cefeimlk 6!7M!lL'fUdf0fl and 1611 ml zivlfwfy From the blast-off at the bowling alley to the John Henry party at the Canteen, senior week was seven lazy, crazy, fun- packed days. Our energies were drained at the barbecue and square dance, only to come back strong for class day with its kicks and funzies for underclassmen and awards and scholarships for seniors. Jerry Lewis as the Lady's Man entertained at the Princess, and a soft ball game pitted beauty vs beast. Fishing, swimming, and hiking were features of the day at Poston's. Bedraggled from a strenuous skating party, seniors spruced up to play hosts for the facility luncheon. Rome Adventure concluded the series of all-senior fun. gal Ep .. l, .W Q. 1 ,1 ' . 3:42-Q-G-1 ' , is e 1 ftfisfl l Siicxiyzr 1.131352 353333 tsaswl - E.vat.:.Qf . ' ik gl. 141, . A feeling of fear, of doubt, but of determination dominated each of the 108 graduates, as he walked from RHS for the final time on May 29, 1963. However, any such feeling was relieved in the festivities that followed. In an atmosphere of Moon- light and Roses upperclassmen and dates danced at the Elks ballroom until the magical hour of twelve. Seniors then changed to sport attire for the traditional all-night party of eating, talking, and dancing. x 55:9 i . . fi tc 'I . , ,.,.f- We 5+ ,Q ff . 4 at 1, E wif. 53 .,, .K-L, ., . , ,.3zM'., 35' F! Rushville placed well in early season tournaments, and the trend continued after varsity teams, composed of Joe Emerson and Larry Wilkinson, David Stevens and Kenny Todd, were chosen. Both teams quali- fied for the zone contest by defeating New Castle in the sectional. Emerson and Wilk- inson dropped out in the zone, but Todd and Stevens placed second and qualified for the state finals, where they were defeated. The final activity was the initiation of eight juniors as a nucleus for next year. HINSHAW FIELD-1962 So reads the inscription on the large gray boulder at the north end of the athletic field. In an impressive ceremony on October 12, Memorial Field was renamed as a tribute to a great coach. From 1929 to 1945 Robert S. Hinshaw served variously in the athletic department of Rushville High School . . .as coach of foot- ball, basketball and track, as a teacher of physical education and as athletic director. Some of the finest teams in the history of the school were developed under his tutelage, but Bob Hinshaw was more interested in developing character than in winning games. In 1945 he became assistant commissioner of the Indiana High School Athletic Association, a position he held until his death on June 3, 1961. This year he was honored posthumous- ly, when he was named to the Indiana Bas- ketball Hall of Fame. WW ofcoaefea' 72' .am af imap 04,4 Gone are the days when one man coached everything from football to marbles. Now each coach is a specialist in his own field, and Rushville High School has seven of them. That they are gentlemen is reflected in their deportment and that of their boys both on and off the floor. Collegiate experience has fitted each one for his particular sport, and all are academically trained for strong class room teaching. James Gridley, with a fine coaching record, is athletic director. To wear an R sweater is the aspiration of every athletically inclined boy who enters RHS. This is attained through perseverance on the part of the individual in cooperation with his coach. To create and maintain a high regard for scholastic attainment as well as athletic participation, letter winners who have an average of 80W or above are members of the exclusive R-club, and later of the Alumni R-club. More important than the bricks and mor- tar with which a school is constructed are the men and women who comprise its ins- tructional staff. As RHS-ers will vouch, teachers do much more than deliver learned lectures and administer pop quizzes. They double in the capacity of club sponsors, chaperones and untold other roles. Our facul- ty members, who total 36, hold degrees from numerous colleges and universities, and they continue to learn through attendance at sum- mer school sessions. The school board of three members and the superintendent direct the entire school system. More directly RHS is influenced by Principal Ben B. Earley and his assistant, James Gridley. Johnny can read . . . and so can Mary, if they attend RHS. Stepping out ahead of other schools in this area, Rushville High School established a reading program five years ago. Reading films, timed essays, com- prehension tests, vocabulary studies, tachi- stocope and shadowscopes are used to im- prove reading techniques and increase voca- bularies. Johnny wants to read . . . and so does Mary. Encouraged by new reading skills and the availability of good books, students make the library one of the most frequented spots in school. Arranged according to the Dewey decimal system, more than 4,500 books are readily available to readers. These include reference texts in various fields of study, as well as fiction and noteworthy biography. Both current magazines and accumulations of past periodicals are on file as source materials for research papers and current reports. BEULAH BlSl'lOPfB.A. Indiana Unlverslty: Phi Beta Knhlm. From Great Expectations to memorizing famous quotations from Shakespeare, Eng- lish students were challenged through the writings of great authors. ' But English is a much broader field of study. What freshman can forget that first oral book report that rendered him speech- less and threatened his knee bones? Who can forget the hours spent on a theme, only to have it returned with a rich embroidery of red ink corrections? The intricacies of gram- mar constantly beset us. Grouped as a whole, these activities were an attempt to develop discriminating tastes, creative expression and prepare students for their future, whether it be college, the busi- ness world or community life. Spanish scholars groped for the correct verb form, played bingo, and broadened their vocabularies by delving into a Spanish novel, Zalacain el aventurof' Following the trend of language emphasis, RHS widened its scope to include a course in French. Leaning toward the conversational aspect of language study, students parlez- vous -ed their French to the tune of a song, Records, spelling bees and an interview with a native French woman added spice to the course, which attracted forty linguists. SENIOR MATH STUDENTS lhllly cnnlc section! lll l discus:- llnn led by Lincoln Fnley Ind Rex Rlttlln. Whether it be mathematics or science, devotees of these subjects used as their guid- ing tools precision and just plain brain power. Advanced mathematicians delighted in para- metric equations and cosines, while the younger enthusiasts whetted their appetites on isosceles triangles and equations involv- ing two unknowns. Those less inclined settled for general math. Chemistry and physics fans experimented with sulphuric acid during lab periods and reveled in the theories of Boyle. Their comrades in science, the biology students, made the acquaintance of Darwin, probed into the anatomy of frogs and made fall raids on Bugville. Farm procedures have progressed rapidly since Old MacDonald had a farm, and RHS ag boys are keeping abreast the changing times. Animal husbandry, agronomy, farm shop and maintenance helped these future farmers plan for greater productivity. Industrial arts enrollees operated in an expansive shop area, which they shared with the agriculture department. The work area permitted bringing in farm machinery and other equipment for study and repair. Students in woodworking moved easily from building small articles to construction of pieces of furniture. Hobo days found most of them doing odd jobs for the required three bucks, although a few invested in sleep. Deborah Pond sold miles and miles of Christmas ribbon for honors in that project. The Oldies but Goodies mixer with President Mark Cherry spinning the platters was one of the year's best. Juniors boasted of their loyalty and ath- letic prowess with 27 lettermen, three cheer- leaders, and Christy Ralstin, Homecoming Queen. Never argue with a junior, for he probably is on the debate team. Equally talented were participants in the music pro- gram, Hi-Y and Y-teens. Joe Emerson with a 98 average led a scholastically keen class. As international ambassadors of good will, the juniors and their senior guests went abroad on May 24 for An Evening in Paris, spent dining and dancing to Al Cobine's band. TAKING A COKE BREAK from business ure sophomore Although the sophomores have had pet- ticoat rule this year with Tomasenia Chris- topher, only feminine president, wielding the gavel, this proves the progressive spirit of the class. Before the opening of school the finance committee had arranged for the sale of stationery depicting four public buildings including the high school and gymnasium. Delores Copp's persuasive ability enabled her to sell approximately 100 boxes for salesman- ship honors. Mike Badell, currently known as Moonstruck Mike, emceed two popular mixers. Debra Fraley and Linda Scott with aver- ages of 97.2W led the 40 eager beaver sophs on the semester honor roll. Vera Case was class traveler, having made a trip to Russia. Avonelle Chance and Margaret Diek- man added to their knowledge by attending the World's Fair. Bud Schenk spent a day as page at the State Legislature. Class beauties were Carol Bradfield, Homecoming Queen candidate, and Ginny Green, sweetheart of FFA. Carol, Avonelle, Carolyn Emerson, Jim- mie Mull and Dave Montgomery were gener- ous with their musical ability, The Boy Scout God and Country award became a cherished possession of Greg McManus. offleul: Tumnenln Christopher - president.
