S . i HOWEVER FINE it may be, a school building is only a symbol of learning. Unless there are children in its class- rooms and laboratories and on its playing fields, and unless there are teachers dedicated to the enlightment of these youth, the building is but an empty shell. Not merely a place of intellec- tual instruction for a favored few, but a social institution for the masses, Rushville High School is typical of the Ameri- can free school system instituted in 1635. Here pupils are united with teachers in the bond of com- mon interests embracing s t u d y and social living. .The friendships made and the experiences shared shape the lives and build foundations for the future of eager participants. A lab- oratory for living, RHS molds our basic concepts through its comprehensive program of varied curricula. It is a place Where one may practice, not only the three Rts, but the three H's - health, hobbies and happiness. School clubs and athletics give an insight into the realms of getting along with others and using talents collectively for a com- mon good. School life implants such characteristics as respect, loyalty, and patriotism. The whole purpose of this campaign is to prepare students for college or a vocation, but most of all, for living. Q 9000! Q' cg?06lZ1?!Z06 TERM PAPERS involving research have become routine. for seniors like Ronnie Wells and Jim Kent. SLIDE RULE TECHNIQUE, once they master it under the tutelage of Lewis Thompson, will speed up work for Randy Moore and Jean Weidner. THE FINGER BONE connected to the wrist bone, chants Melvin Tallent to Dennis Marshall as they bone-up for a quiz in health. College Preparater Course Stresses Arts and Sciences Long before Sputnik alerted the World to the need for more and stronger courses in mathematics and science, college prepara- tory students in Rushville were going be- yond the requirement of one year of science and two of math. Under qualified instruc- tors, many elect three and four years of study in these two fields. An opportunity for four years work in English, social studies and languages gives a good general background for college work. In addition, pupils are free to choose electives from other curricula, and to develop special talents in music and art. Although designed especially for the college-bound student, graduates have found that many employers prefer one who has had this broader edu- cation to one trained along technical lines only. REPUBLICAN or Democrat-that is the question of this social studies group on a courthouse field trip. Wlfmmm' LATIN isn't a dead language! says Anglia Owen as she performs a routine grammar chore. SLATE SCULPTURING has given Linda Hall an op- portunity to exercise her artistic ability, and to relieve the tedium of required courses. LITTLE TONY receives a bath from his many foster mothers in home nursing' class. THE WRIGHTS, Sandy and Alice, find that making shirts the wright length is important. QUEEN OF THE SKILLET, Donna Owens demonstrates her culinary ability with a serving of French toast. Home Makers More Versatile Realizing that homemaking is a full-time job, the home economics area concentrates on making its graduates not just house- wives, but tomorrow's h o m e m a k e r s. Stressing more than the rudiments of cook- ing and sewing, this department keeps abreast with modern trends by offering courses in family relations, consumer prob- lems, home nursing, and other related sub- jects. Many special projects are shared with the student body through the attrac- tively arranged display case. By combining this curriculum with the college prepara- tory course, girls may take the initial step toward vocational careers. I 4 WHEN FARM MACHINERY breaks down, Bill Kirk- patrick and Al Saxon know just how to fix it. DIRT takes on new meaning for Charles Ariens and Richard Gordon after their course in ag. NOT MEN FROM MARS, but Albert Meyer and Joe Niehoff working on a welding project. Ag Curriculum Well-Rounded Since we live in an agricultural area, the agriculture class is a valuable one for many farm students. Studying not from a text- book, but from up-to-date pamphlets, boys are kept abreast With new procedures. First and second year students spend a year in livestock production and judging, and an- other year in crop production and judging. Juniors and seniors study the economic as- pects of farm life such as marketing, sell- ing, farm accounting, and income tax. All receive training in farm carpentry and Welding. Each boy must elect a supervised farm project, whereby he puts class in- struction to practical use. Commercial Laliorator Trains llnrollees for Business World Future accountants, bookkeepers and sec- retaries are prepared for positions in the Well-equipped commercial department. A Wide variety of office machines gives prac- tical experience for the future office Worker. Figuring income tax, understanding funda- mental law procedures, mastering short- hand, and working up speed and accuracy in typing are routine activities. Although designed especially for these people, several courses, particularly typing, attract other students. DEAR MR. INDUSTRIAL CONCERNS will welcome shop trainees like Steve Myer, when they have completed high school. EMBRYO ENGINEERS, which include Bill Waite, get the jump on their careers by en- rolling in mechanical drawing class. hop Trainees Acquire kill Working in a Well-equipped shop area, boys taking the industrial arts courses have the opportunity to receive actual experience in their various fields. Four broad cate-- gories are available in industrial arts-Wood- Working, machine shop, general metals, and mechanical drawing. Under these headings fall such classes as trades and industry, general shop, engineering and architectural drawing, plastics, and electricity. Learning such things as safe shop procedures, how to follow blueprints, etc are helpful for the future. CABINET . ROW. 1: Clark, K.
