Working with the Y-teens, this group plans school parties and mixers, and arranges the annual Thanksgiving convoca- tion. In January the two groups participated in the local Salvation Army fund-raising cam- paign, which netted over 3700. For these joint projects these two clubs received the award for outstanding school and community serv- ice at the spring Hi-Y-Tri Hi-Y conference. Members of this group distributed Christ- mas tuberculosis posters, attended confer- ences at New Castle and Brookville, and will sponsor the annual commencement night prom. As the book goes to press, 1957-1958 officers have been elected and installed, and a group of freshmen added to the membership roll. Row leg. Fraley, K. Keith, J. French, J. Kubik, J. Jackson, L. Nt- Aman A group of actors in costume make a congenial scene as they share the latest theatre news. They are cast in the roles of band officers and are: Sonnic Harbison- co-captain, Madeleine Bonnevlibrarian, Marcia Renegar -secretary, Jack Stevens-drum major, Fred Dean-Cap- tain, and Judy Waite-assistant librarian. J Always eager to get into the act are the school instrumentalists, who form the band. Director Donald E. Myers finds his greatest problem in rehearsal is seating this large group, which with the junior high band totals 98 people. When practice starts, something good hap- pens, at least all signs point to that, since six soloists and four ensembles won first division ratings in the Solo and Ensemble contest at Ball State in February. In the district contest held at Franklin in April, Rushville musicians placed first against all other class B competition, and was the only band in its class so to place. Color is added to local athletic encounters and dignity to the baccalaureate and commence- ment programs by the polished performance of this group of actors. Older and more exper- ienced members from each band section were privileged to be a part of the 150 piece band which played at Franklin in the Good Neighbor Festival in May, and the entire band partici- pated in the departmental review. Individual members frequently appear as soloists or in small groups at civic meetings. Row lfS. Robinson, K. Roberts, M. Land. S. Ravenscraft. J. Dill. D. McGinnis. J. Caldwell. S. Harblson. Row 2-J. Weather was no deterrent to these faithfuls, who made the early morning trek to the Annex for pre-school practice sessions. For the first time a B or feeder choir was organized, so that experienced voices will be ready to fill the vacancies left by graduation. Credit is granted for choir, but most members belong for the pure joy of singing. Under the able direction of veteran choir master, Donald E. Myers, the group won a first division rating in the music festival at Franklin, participated in the departmental review, traded convocation programs with Shelbyville, sang several special numbers at baccalaureate, and aided by the B choir, pre- sented a beautiful Christmas program. Cos- tumed in gray robes with scarlet stoles, Rush- vil1e's choir is pleasing to view and enchanting to hear. Row 1-T. Keaton, B. Wagner, R. Axsom, D, Voiles, D, Brown, T. Harbaugh. T. Cameron. D. Under the direction of Coach Les Ray, the Lions won a total of thirteen games and lost eight, includ- ing tournament play. The team opened the season with seven let- termen returning from the 1955-56 squad. These veterans were Jim Glover, Bob Hay- wood, Delbert Michel, Dave Russell, Bud Shep- ler, Larry Skillman, and George Williams. The Lions stopped Morristown 78-60 in the opening game, and then downed the Bates- ville Bulldogs with an 88-75 score. Rushville met its first defeat of the season at the hands of Anderson, which had been returned to the Lions' schedule after an absence of many years. The Red and Black quickly bounced back after this loss, and routed Greensburg 88-30 in one of the most smashing RHS vic- tories in many years. In conference play Martinsville and Con- nersville were victims of the Lions' onslaught. Pendleton was defeated 59-50, and North Ver- non fell, before Southportls Cardinals, who became SCC eo-champs, put an end to Rush- ville's victory streak. In the opening game of the New Year's Tourney held at Greensburg, the Lions were squeezed out by Connersville 55-51, but easily defeated the host Pirates in the consolation game. The fourth SCC victory of the season was an 82-67 decision over Seymour. Shelbyville's hot-shooting Golden Bears downed the RHS team in the next conference game. Greenfield rallied in the final quarter to drop the Lions, JAMES GLOVER DELBERT MICHEL PHILIP MOORE 53-47, but in an SCC contest Rushville de- feated the Columbus Bulldogs. 73-59. After losing games to New Castle and Franklin, the Lions redeemed themselves by downing Law- renceburg and Greensburg and then wrapped up the schedule in fine style with an impres- sive 73-48 victory over Muncie Burris. Arlington prematurely rang down the cur- tain on the RHS 1956-57 season, when the Wildcats sank the Red and Black 65-51 in the Lions' first sectional tourney play. With a conference record of five wins and three losses, Rushville tied for third place in the SCC standings. Delbert Michel was named to the all-conference team, was hon- orary team captain, and received thc Jaycee award as most valuable player. MARVIN SHEPLER ROBERT HAYWOOD DAVID RUSSELL LARRY SKILLMAN CHARLES STEVENS GEORGE WILLIAMS BILLY EARNEST Klum If it is a scrappy performance you want to witness, the B-team basketball squad can give it to you. Under the tutelage of Jack Shaff- ner, these Lion understudies turned in an im- pressive 17-3 season. Victories were over Mor- ristown, Batesville, Greensburg, Martinsville, Connersville, Pendleton, North Vernon, Sey- mour, Shelbyville, Columbus, Franklin, New Castle, Lawrenceburg, and Burris of Muncie. Losses were to Anderson, Southport and Greenfield. The laurels of RHS are in good hands with these young cubs. .7l'0:fAl'YlQI'l A baby boy in Hoosierland might well re- ceive a basketball for his first Christmas. Practice begins early, and by the time a youngster is a freshman, he is shooting for a berth on the varsity. This year's frosh were no exception, and from their fine perform- ance, indications are they will make it. Coach Bob Gardner's proteges had victories over Morristown, New Castle, Greenfield, Shelby- ville, Connersville, Carthage, and Greensburg, and losses to Connersville, Greensburg, Mor- ristown, Shelbyville, and New Castle. Despite injuries and illness, Nancy Perkins. Bonnie Duffey, Barbara Timmons, and Julia Jackson carried on in fine style their duties as cheerleaders. Their enthus- iasm, plus that of the fans, spurred the Lions to victory in many difficult games. We nominate these girls for Oscars. Chosen on the basis of voice, personality, dependability, amiability, and loyalty, this group represents the school at home and abroad. While the Twelve Girls have no Oscars to exhibit, they have attracted much attention to RHS by their presentation of popular song hits. Accomplishments of this ensemble in- clude a first in the Solo and Ensemble contest at Ball State, singing at two Indianapolis con- ventions, and for the Ball State sorority of a former member, Jane Myers, and many local engagements. They sing as a unit with the high school choir. CAIN fmad gonuocafion Through the combined efforts of the 160 students who comprise the A and B choirs, an impressive convocation program was pre- sented to the junior and senior high school pupils, and interested patrons of the school on December 21. A singing Christmas tree formed by mem- bers of the choirs was arranged before a back- drop that sparkled with snowflakes and stars. At the pinnacle of the tree hung a beautiful angel. Choir members wore white shirts and blouses, green ties, and gay Christmas baubles. The base and fringes of the tree were lighted, which added to the spectacular beauty of the arrangement. The program featured such old favorites as O Little Town of Bethlehem, The First Noel and One Little Candle, and was interspered with solos and Biblical readings. .Ran f' .F ffl? . vii' 'Hr-'ai' .
