USS Rushmore CLSD-145 RUSHMORE CLSD-147 was laid down as HMS SWORD on New Year's Eve of 1943 by Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Co., Newport News, Virginia. She was launched as RUSHMORE on May 10, 1944. USS RUSHMORE CLSD-145 was commissioned on July 3, 1944. Following shakedown in Chesapeake Bay, Landing Ship Dock RUSHMORE departed Norfolk in August 5, 1994 for the Pacific where she participated in four amphibious landings, Leyte Gulf in October 1944, Palawan in February 1945, Mindinao in March 1945, and Tarakan in May 1945. After the war, RUSHMORE operated in the Far East, participating in occupied Japanese waters. She was decommissioned on August 10, 1946 and was mothballed in Pascagoula, Mississippi. RUSHMORE was recommissioned in Charleston, South Carolina on September 21, 1950 to begin service with the Atlantic Fleet. She was finally decommissioned on September 30, 1970 and was transferred to the Maritime Administration's National Defense Reserve Fleet on the James River, in February 1971. RUSHMORE earned three Battle Stars for World War ll service.

1' gb ,fm X RY' Qwwmff 5 iz 7 fy 4 X , f f af tl if Z ,W 7 f Ml . 2 2 2 CDR Touchberry graduated from the University of Minnesota in December 1976 receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering and was commissioned an Ensign through the NROTC scholarship program. His first assignment was Auxiliaries Officer and Main Propulsion Assistant on USS WADDELL CDDG 249 homeported in San Diego. ln May of 1981 , .hewas transferred to shore duty as Commanding Officer, Naval and Marine Corps Reserve Center, Waterloo, Iowa. CDR Touchberry then resigned from active duty and after a brief period of broken service was voluntarily recalled in the Training and Administration of Reserves program in July of 1984 and was assigned duties as Recruiting-Officer, Naval Reserve Readiness Command Region SIXTEEN, Minneapolis, Minnesota. Upon completing the SWOSCOLCOM Department Head course in 1987, CDR Touchberry served as Q Engineering Officer, USS PORTLAND CLSD 379 and as a space examiner, CINCPACFLT Propulsion Examining Board. He then was assigned as Executive Officer, USS SCHENECTADY KLST 1185l followed by a tour of duty as Chief Staff Officer, Command Amphibious Squadron FIVE. After his tour as Commanding Officer of USS RUSHMORE CLSD 479, CDR Touchberry is scheduled to become the Executive Officer of USS BELLEAU WOOD CLHA-35. ,fax sg,-1'
